How do you get Free AC out of gnometown? By donating to the priest there?

You need to donate 400 gold x your experience level

For example, a level 1 character would donate 400, a level 2 800, level
3 1200 etc. Each donation will give you 1 AC point

What does a throne have to do with praying or making unholy water?

You can do it easily without angering the gods or losing protection:
#name a bunch of potions of water so they are different slots, then
read a confused ?remove curse to randomly bless/uncurse/curse things in
inventory.Obviously make sure that you're in a safe spot and take off
and drop anything you don't want cursed (or unblessed)

and just to further the info, you can donate to any priest that is guarding
an altar, whether co-aligned or not. Even a priest of Moloch (like the
one in the Valley of the Dead)

Except for the very first donation of each game, which gives a random
amount between 2 and 4 points of AC. And except for donations made when
your naked AC is already 1 or lower, which only has a chance of granting a
point. At -10, that chance is zero, so you can get to naked AC 1 easily,
and 0 with reasonable effort.

The "protection racket" mentioned in the subject line refers to the tactic
of going to minetown fast, while letting your pet do all the fighting so that
you can get the XL1 discount rates. The problem being that an XL1 character
in the mines is practically in danger of dying every turn. But given one or
two good pets, good use of the E-word and preferrably being lawful or a
gnome makes it more or less possible. It's a good learning experience,
either way.

Ohle

Also to further this info. If you want unholy water then make it before you
donate.
I made the mistake of donating and I got -3 protection from the priest.
Then I droped
some water on the throne and prayed. Gone was that -3 protection.
Typically you
only need to make unholy water once, just try to do it before your first
donation.

I think he meant altar.

you can also (randomly) get a potion of unholy water by dipping a
potion in a fountain. It doesn't happen very often, but it does happen
occasionally.

Correct. So it averages 7 donations to get down to naked AC 1.

It's a sliding scale from 10% down to 0% at -10.

I usually quit with naked AC 1 unless I have a lot of cash.

With the amount of money floating around XL1 isn't strictly necessary. If you
take the time to clean out all of the shops in Minetown and on DL2-4 or so
you can rack up some serious cash. Also cash is often obtainable from the
valuts in the 1st few levels. I often will scour the 1st level of the mines
for a pickaxe or broad pick to get into the vaults.

In my current game I lost my pet early. So I had to start fighting. I'm in
Minetown now at XL9! However because of vault cleaning and upper shops I
have $9000 to spend. I also have a couple of new pets so I plan to clean out
the minetown shops.

1. HP are always an issue at low XL. Once boost is that your god will help out
if you are below 6 HP and have less than 15 HP max at XL1 and 20HP max at XL2.
If you pray (make sure your prayer timeout is 0!!! REALLY IMPORTANT!) then your
god will not only restore you to Max HP but bump up your Max HP as many as 5 HP.
Often I have 2nd level characters running around with 24 HP.

2. Armor up for the run. Use your pet to do a curse ID on everything you pick up.
Often in the 1st level of the mines a dwarf will drop iron shoes, hat, and shield
along with dwarvish mithril. You can get negative AC before heading too far in.
And because you have the buff pet, you can take some hits while your pet takes
out attackers.

3. To simplify the process of cleaning out shops, personally I credit clone.

Anyway at the end of the run I get my weight free crystal plate equivalent and
am ready to level up. I then begin the quest for MR, reflection, and a BoH.

Hope this helps,

BAJ

I didn't know that trick
So read a remove curse while confused?
I'll try that one on my next game

_blessed_ remove curse, while confused. It'll randomly
bless/curse/uncurse everything in your inventory.
