I don't usually gratuitously quote Firefly, but this begs for it:

"It watn't really broke."

That is, your computer's configuration regarding codepages was the thing
that was wrong, not something with Crawl itself. I do recommend
downloading the same Darshan's Trvel Patch, though, as that actually
does "fix" a good deal of things with Crawl and makes it a more fun
experience, IMHO.
