I don't think you should be having trouble with a system like yours. My
suggestions are to make sure you do a reboot before opening the game, and
close everything that's running in the background (you might be surprised to
see what's running back there). In the game, you can reduce things like the
distance view and turn off shadows to see if it runs faster. But nearly
anything you can turn down in the game video display is going to greatly
affect your graphics quality. If you've been used to high graphics, it will
be disappointing to lower them. Also, delete the file called groups.cache
that is in My Documents/EA Games/The Sims2. It's just a file the game makes
to keep track of itself and will regenerate a new one if you delete the old
one. Sometimes that helps.

I find there is a jerk when the weather kicks in - rain, snow, or the next
layer of snow on the lot. And I did find a large 5x5 lot was slowing
rapidly - but that size often does.

Just to add my own observations:

I've found that since installing Seasons, my framerate drops to nothing
immediately after loading a lot--if I Alt-Tab to the desktop and back again,
the framerate goes back to normal.

Funny thing is, until Seasons, I had the exact opposite problem--Alt-Tabbing
out of the game and back killed my framerate and it stayed that way until I
actually exited and reloaded a lot. So arguably, that's an improvement...

And yes, I do have a momentary slowdown as well when rain or snow starts,
but that's kinda expected for the transition.

Yeah, I get that too. The first 5-10 minutes after going into the first lot
of a gameplay session are really choppy. But after a while it smoothes out
and runs nicely. (I actually usually hit the pause button and let it sit for
a couple minutes for it to catch up)

At the time I chalked it up to my video card, a 7600GS which has pretty
decent power, but has slower memory on it to make it cheaper. I thought
maybe it was taking longer from all the textures to be loaded into memory.
