I was able to have the Aceupdater work frin on my XP machines.
Now with this VISTA machine I can install the program but somethign in
Windows prevent it from finishing when I run it.
I had to go into control panel to allow winodws to accept what the
program was doing but I could not find the EXE. Got impatient so I
just ended up uninstalling it and am going to start over.

Any program that automatically retrieves and updates files would probably
need to be installed with administrator privileges to work correctly under
Vista.
Did you install the updater in administrator mode? Or as a regular user?

Just turn off UAC, all your programs will then run as requested....
It's easy to turn it off, click start, then help and support, then type UAC
then find the option to turn UAC off, turn it off, and use your pc as you
should
Leave it on if you want pop ups every 5 mins, and are really worried
someone's going to try and hack you, but tbh Vista without UAC is like XP
anyway, keep firewall on and anti virus and your good to go..
UAC = User Account control. >> Stay informed about: Anybody Have any Problems With AceUpdater for Addons and V.. |

I will add, before people start flaming me about UAC...
UAC has been developed by Microsoft to make windows more like Linux, OSX etc
In short terms what it does is remove the ability of the user to run
everything as an administrator, now in Linux this is fine as everyone knows
you should never run programs in root, but in MS os's we have always been
admin of our own machine and all programs have been run as administrator.
If programmers didn't hate UAC so much they might program the apps with UAC
switched on, in fact they are all turning it off so in effect turning their
Vista pc into a winXP machine <security wise>
So MS either need to make UAC compulsory or remove it totally, as windows xp
doesn't use it and games/apps manufacturers have to write software to run
with both OS's I would say it's best to keep it switched off. >> Stay informed about: Anybody Have any Problems With AceUpdater for Addons and V.. |

I have no problems running it on Vista, but I may well be running it in
Admin mode (I'm not by the computer at the moment so I can't check).

Perhaps that is a good idea.
But according to a good friend of ours this one is reliable.
Well I only have to make sure the updates are up to date for the Kara
runs so maybe I can just do it the way of manual updates.
I shall see oh Kimmosabee, I shale see.

Actually, UAC is simply a lame attempt to let the user AVOID proper access
controls. In most situations the user is still admin - all UAC does is spam
a password window at them.
>If programmers didn't hate UAC so much they might program the apps with UAC

You are correct that a windows app can be written to properly interact with
UAC (so that there's only one entry required, and only when needed). But
coding one that way can actually reduce the security of the app, because
windows believes the app when it says it only needs security at those
points. It's a big mess.
>So MS either need to make UAC compulsory or remove it totally, as windows xp

Windows needs to come up with a proper security model that makes it
feasible to run the machine in end-user mode. WAY, way too much stuff runs
in admin mode and thus has the run of the machine. *

Ronny <ronny RemoveThis @spam.ronny.ws> wrote:

Except it doesn't do that at all. In unix, the user makes a decision
whether or not to invoke superuser privileges. In Vista, the OS decides
when to bug the user for UAC permission. And that's all it is,
permission, and not authentication.
This is considerably less secure than the unix way of doing things.
Here's a big, big hole: Vista assumes that *all setup programs* should be
run as admin. So you try to run an installer, and UAC pops up, giving you
two choices: let the installer run as admin, or don't run it. Download
some random piece of freeware, and if you want to install it, you have to
run it as administrator. Sure, you get a UAC prompt, but why should
random installers be allowed to load kernel drivers if they don't need to?
This is tied to the problem of how Vista recognizes installers: through a
combination of database lookup and various complicated rules, such as
having the file contain the string 'setup' in its filename.
In some ways, this is a step *back* from XP. It's not a security feature,
it's a foisting of responsibility for security off onto the user.
"Shouldn't have clicked 'yes' when UAC prompted you, then."
> So MS either need to make UAC compulsory or remove it totally, as windows xp

The programmers also need to understand that not everything needs to run
as administrator. This is the problem with XP. You can, theoretically,
install software under a user account with restricted permissions, but
most software will glitch on the install or during use, because it's
written with the assumption that you're running it with admin privileges.
It's a very dangerous assumption, but it's also a self-fulfilling one. >> Stay informed about: Anybody Have any Problems With AceUpdater for Addons and V.. |

indeed
it's a move in the right direction
after a few years everyone will be used to writing programs designed for
limited users

In the WAU FAQ there is a mention of problems running WAU in Vista if WoW is
installed to the Program Files directory. I have no idea if this will help
you or not, but it's worth a look I suppose.
http://www.wowace.com/forums/index.php?topic=8298.msg172433
You might also want to try one of the other ace updaters instead of this
one. There's a short list of them at the bottom of this page:

When you have a lot of addons (as I do) then doing it manually is a
horrendously time consuming and tedious job.
I just run WowAceUpdater, hit the "Update Installed Addons" button
and wait 2 minutes - job done.
I only then have to worry about the non-Ace-based addons I have, which
is comparatively few.
It's a huge time-saver, and perfectly safe to use.

Well anyway this is what I had to do to get it to work.
First I set the UAC to off as suggested.
Then instead of installiing it through Internet Explorer I had to
download the ZIP file, unzip and then run setup.exe. I placed it into
the addon folder. Not sure if that was needed.
Then it would still not work until I went into control panel and set
the DEP to allow it to work.
However there is now another problem.
Sure it ran and did not shut down but when I got to the part where you
check off the boxes that you want to install the addons for and I
clicked F10 nothing happened.
On my previous PC the first time I ran it I clicked the boxes for Big
Wigs and OMEN and hit F10 and they installed.
Well I'll get there. I'm getting closer and closer by the minute.
Kara Sunday at 5:30 PM. Running out of time but it will happen.
