Thanks to everybody's suggestions. I finally, after much reading found a
solution. I still don't know if my "cure" explanation is right, but what I
ended up doing was running the installation from my DVD drive. I rarely
use it on this computer, but it is a little faster than my CD drive. One of
the items on the help page suggested that speed might influence the ability
to load. It still stalled at the same place, but I kept hitting retry and
every time, it seemed to have loaded a little more. By the fourth retry, it
loaded the whole thing. Since I can run the game from the unused DVD drive,
rather than my heavily used CD burner, it is actually an improvement.
Strange, but it works now so I guess I'll not be too nasty about it.
