Ok, I don't know if this is the sort of UT problem you guys can help
with, but I'll ask anyway...
I've had a lot of trouble with trojans and viruses on my computer
recently, and via my Sygate Firewall, I've blocked some programs from
accessing the 'net. My problem is that now UT2004 can't access the 'net.
I have to turn the firewall off if I want to play online.
Obviously, UT2004 has permission to access the net, but is there another
file or program that UT needs in order to get net access, that I may
have blocked? >> Stay informed about: Problem! |

Assuming you're running XP SP2, is the Windows firewall also running?
You only need one software firewall.
And did you just recently start using Sygate, or was it changes to an
existing Sygate config that caused the problem? Either way, you might
want to consider an uninstall/reinstall of Sygate.
But FWIW, I found this bit of info on UT client port usage, but I
wouldn't stand on a stack of bibles and swear it's accurate.
Primary Connection (1) -
28900 TCP Outbound (Advertised Server Port)
Secondary Connection (1) -
28900 UDP Send Receive (Advertised Server Port)
Primary Connection (2) -
27900 TCP Outbound (Second Advertised Server Port)
Secondary Connection (2) -
27900 UDP Send Receive (Second Advertised Server Port)
Primary Connection (3) -
7777 UDP Send Receive (Main Game Port)
Primary Connection (4) -
7778 UDP Send Receive (First Dynamic Game Port)
Primary Connection (5) -
7779 UDP Send Receive (Second Dynamic Game Port)
But a lot of servers use non-standard ports, so this would only work
for some servers. It's best to try and figure out why Sygate is
blocking an approved application from opening ports. >> Stay informed about: Problem! |

Yes, it's XP SP2, and no, the Windows Firewall is turned off.

I've used Sygate for some time. I'm really stuck with this now. I've
just gone through the apps that are blocked completely and none of them
are related to UT in any way that I can see.
I only blocked those which I was certain were ok to block.. any that I
was unsure of, I told my firewall to ask me for my permission to access
the net, then I could see what they were up to.
Yep, I think I'll reinstall Sygate and start afresh with it.
Thanks for the quick reply Folk >> Stay informed about: Problem! |

I've found kerio's freebie to do a really great job with a very low overhead
on system usage. >> Stay informed about: Problem! |

Good to hear.
It's a shame that the "fix" for so many software problems these days
is to reinstall. >> Stay informed about: Problem! |

Yes I used to use Kerio a long time ago, but for some reason I changed
to Sygate.. I remember there being some issue with Kerio but I can't
bluddy remember what it was. It must be an age thing. >> Stay informed about: Problem! |

Aye. Everything is working ok now, but yesterday, shortly after
re-installing Sygate, it popped a message up saying "ntoskrnl (or
something like that) has been blocked from accessing the network"
"Huh?", I thought to myself. I hadn't blocked *anything* manually yet.
All seems to be ok now though. >> Stay informed about: Problem! |

Most firewalls come "preloaded" with malware blocks in place already. If I
were you I'd run hijackthis just to check things out. Oftentimes when
something seems a little odd it's best to run it down. >> Stay informed about: Problem! |

Having run Spybot and AVG anti-virus repeatedly, only to find my trojans
and especially that nasty Virtumundo virus always return, I took the
desperate measure of actually paying for anti-spyware software from PC
Tools. While I was there I got a discount on their Registry Mechanic
too. I ran their Spyware Doctor and was shocked to see 300 infections..
this being just after I had run Spybot and got the all-clear!
My firewall is still popping-up messages saying ntoskrnl has been
blocked from accessing the network. I would have thought this was an
essential part of Windows? There appears to be no effect though. All is
well, and UT is as good as ever

There are virus variants out there that alter that file, quite old now
but.........
Type ntoskrnl into google or try w32.Bolzano. You may still have something
lurking.

I Googled for it and found people with the same problem, on a Sygate
forum! There are solutions there. I'm considering going back to Kerio
though.

My recomendation, FWIW, is to try Mandriva, Ubuntu and maybe Suse live cd's
to see which one you like the feel of. All are available with a quick
google for linux live cd.
After you have tried them out install a couple as well, I don't know about
Ubuntu but Mandriva will set up a dual boot system without any grief at all
and again IMHO provides the best graphical tools for setup and sys admin.

Thanks sid! May I also ask where you find the best support at? I can

Most distros have their own support forums. There are also shed loads of
help pages all over the net. I tried Fedora core for a couple of years
and I can definitely recommend that you don't go anywhere near it. My
advice would be Ubuntu. Like most it will setup a dual boot with no
problems at all. If you go for 6.06 it has LTS (Long Term Support) which
is quite nice. Most distros (Including Ubuntu 6.10) get updated every 6
months with support for 18 months. I think Sid has made the best comment
though, go get some live CDs. See if they support your hardware. Go here
http://distrowatch.com/ for links to all distros and a load of
information on them all. If you do install Ubuntu look for a programme
called Automatix http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=138405 I
promise you once that is installed you will wonder why you ever used
Windows.
