I hope I'm not breaking the rules by asking this, but what should I do
with a game that I'm stuck on due to a bug? (I won't name the game,
obviously.) Do I have to either not rate the game, or rate it purely on
the part I experienced before encountering the bug? I'd like to contact
the author and ask for a workaround, since I don't think it's entirely
fair to give up on a game due to a single bug, but I doubt that would be
within the rules? (Any other suggestions?)
Cheers,

Sorry for replying to my own post, but I've just tried another terp and
the bug isn't there. Whether that means there's a bug in my first-choice
terp, or the second one is simply more permissive of errors, I don't
know. (Presumably it would be out of line to name the game, or either of
the terps, until the comp is over, so I won't.)
Cheers,

The general answer to this question is, you are not obligated to do
either of these things. You are not obligated to refrain from either
of them either. Some people do (1), some do (2), and some take the
third course -- rate the part they experienced, including the
(negative) experience of hitting a bug.

While I think you've already solved your problem, I did want to mention
that I had a similar bug-like situation last year (or the year before,
I'm not sure), when I emailed Stephen Granade for advice on how to
proceed. He suggested contacting the author first, so I think that's
definitely acceptable. Also, in general, if I were asking myself, "Is
such-and-such okay by the rules?" I would probably ask him (Stephen)
about whatever it was. He seems like a pretty approachable guy.

It is legal to communicate with the authors privately, and I've done so
before without anybody complaining. You should not discuss entries
in a public forum, like this one.

Just to note: you can always contact an author for whatever
reason. Contacting them to give them feedback would be especially
appreciated.

I do try. If you don't get an answer from me after a few days, though,
it's worth resending -- these days the ifcomp mailing address gets a
lot of spam.
