I installed it again recently but when i got to the bit where it asks if you
have more or less then 16 megs of memory free, no matter which option I choose,
it crashes, this never happened before.

If your OS hasn't changed since the previous install, the CD-ROM is probably
aging. You could try it with a different drive, with your backup discs or
with someone else's disc. >> Stay informed about: Problem with Civ 2 |

My first guess would be that you need to install/update the Indeo
video codec. Been a while since I installed the game, but I think it
plays a video at that point, and if you don't have the right drivers
(which if you have WinXP would be the case, by default, unless you've
downloaded/installed them elsewhere), it won't play. I don't know if
it would crash, but it is possible.
Second guess with Civ2 original (1.00), you need to manually install
WinG (on a folder on the CD), because it doesn't come with Windows (or
DirectX).
A third universal problem is a bad/dirty CD or drive -- I've seene
that happen with other games, no way to figure out why it won't work,
because the installer isn't designed to cope with disc errors.

That could be the case as I am now using XP, whereas when I installed the game
earlier on a different computer it was windows 98.

If it is indeo, check www.ligos.com for the latest XP codecs.
I don't remember exactly what I did with it -- I've had XP for a
while. But I remember that the startup movie *didn't* play the first
time I installed it. Maybe it triggered the Windows "download codec"
thing, and as I have cable it went so fast I never noticed it?

You have to pay to get them from ligos now. I don't know what the other
options may be. >> Stay informed about: Problem with Civ 2 |

You have to pay if you want them from Ligos, they're free if you don't mind
where they're from. >> Stay informed about: Problem with Civ 2 |

Even without the Indeo drivers it shouldn't crash - regardless whether you
select yes or no (to the more than 16 Mb RAM message). I have XPSP2, don't
have the video drivers, and didn't crash when installing.
I can't help you further, but at least you know that (hopefully) it's not
because of them drivers.
