What really amazes me was your ability to correctly spell private in
the subject, but mispell it the same way twice in the post. I usually
don't say anything about spelling mistakes, especially when its
obvious like you hit the kys in slightly the wrong order, like
priavte, or hit a nearby key by mistake, like privste. But i is clear
across the keyboard.
In any case, playing WoW on a privAte server is like watching TV with
a pirated cable box. By using or operating a private server you are
actively denying Blizzard their subscription fee. If they catch you,
they can try to recoup those lost fees.
In the end, paying for the subscription allows Blizzard to spend more
money on developement, which means new games, new expansions, and all
the goodies that come along with it.
Don't be a douche, pay to play WoW. >> Stay informed about: Private servers |

Exactly. And the stuff about the subscription fees, who cares? In
many cases, you already paid $40 or more for the WoW game to start
with and if you want to use that on a private server, go ahead. It
does not bother anyone - it is not like they are cheating on the real
servers or anything.
Also, it is quite a technical achievment for those who managed to
reverse engineer portions of the game/protocol and develop the private
servers. We need more kids doing that sort of thing! It's not easy! >> Stay informed about: Private servers |

People playing on private servers are not playing the same game as us
paying customers anyway. Private servers have improved I am sure since
I played around and got one working a long time ago but there are
massive holes in the game. They tend to have increased gold/xp/drop
rates and lack of instances, rare mobs and raid bosses. If people want
to go play on them to save $15 a month carry on. >> Stay informed about: Private servers |

I'm always a bit wary when someone speaks for a whole group, with no
references.
Personally I do not care for or about private servers or whether anyone
plays on them. I prefer the normal servers where I'm challenged, and dont
have godly powers.

Godly power are awsome but whre is the fun in that. I have always
hacked every game I"ve played or didn't play it. I gave myself all
kinds of powers but to tell the truth I never really enjoyed playing.
I just enjoyed hacking. WoW is the first game i've played where I
didn't hack and its very rewarding to do it this way. Its actually
fun to play. >> Stay informed about: Private servers |

I too pay to play, but I don't give a rats ass if someone else wants to
play on a private server. Why should I? Until I joined this newsgroup
I did not even know you could.
Besides maybe it is a good thing some people play on a private server.
If they want to run around a private server and be a god in the game, it
keeps them off the real game servers. It sounds like people on private
servers were like the players in Diablo who used the 'trainers' and had
"Godly Armour of the Whale" for everything.
So if you were replaying to me, you STFU and bugger off, in case you

Actually, It's nothing like that at all. You paid your $40-$50 for the
game. The subscription fee is for the right to play on Blizzard's
servers. If you're not playing on their server, you don't have to pay
the monthly fee. But you should still be able to enjoy the game you
paid for.

The $40 you pay is for the game client, not the game itself. You pay
the subscription to play the game. Also, by purchasing the game you
are automatically agreeing to the End User License Agreement (every
piece of software you buy will have one of these), which for WoW,
states that use of the game client outside the subscription service is
outside the use of the license. This means Blizzard can sue you for
the recoup in subscription fees. US copyright laws allow software
purchases to work in this way. You don't actually own the software
either, you just own the rights to use the software in the way the
developer intended.
The next thing you have to look at is the long term costs. You pay
$40 one time to buy the software, but pay $15 a month for a
subscription. What do you think makes Blizzard more money? If you
play for one year, you end up paying $180 to Blizzard. This is why
the EULA states you have to play the game on one of their servers. If
you're playing on a private server, you are actively denying Blizzard
of their subscription fee. That subscription fee pays for
maintenance, which in the form of patches, are obtainable by anyone
with or without a subscription. So without paying, you get the
benefit of maintenance as well.
Basically put, if you buy the software, then you agree to the EULA.
The EULA states you are licensed to use that software to play a
subscription service game. If you use a private server, you are
operating outside of that license. If Blizzard found out you were
doing this, they can take the software away from you (since you don't
actually own the code, thats intellectual property of bBlizzard and
they can take it away from you at will) and if they can prove your
improper use of their software has caused them monetary loss, they can
recoup that.
I also said before, those subscription fees pay for maintenance. That
means the more people who play, the more people Blizzard can pay for
upkeep and new content development. When people play on private
servers, they aren't paying that subscription fee. They play for
free, and you don't get new content on time because Blizzard isn't
making enough money to pay for new developers. In the end, Blizzard
will still make a profit, and the only people hurt is the people who
pay to play. >> Stay informed about: Private servers |

If it makes you feel better, you can believe that people playing on
private servers are hurting the rest of us who pay to play on Blizz
servers. But the truth is they're not hurting anyone (including
Blizzard).
Of course, Blizzard wants everyone paying them for playing every month,
but they are far from needing more money to keep up with maintenance.
Over 8 million subscribers is more than enough to supply maintenance
and new content.
And if you really think they could recoup anything from a player on a
private server, you're deluding yourself. They might be able to get the
servers shut down, but they would have a very hard time stopping anyone
from playing on them while they're up.
(As for taking the software away... explain how they would physically
do that. I know it's within their legal rights according to the EULA.
But, although I may not own the software itself, I do own the packaging
and CDs/DVDs that the software came on, and they would not be able to
take that away from me. Therefore they would not be able to take the
software away.)
For the record, I'm just playing devil's advocate here and I do pay my
monthy subscription fee and play on the Firetree and Turalyon servers.
