| I'm making a new priest and I would like to go with 100% holy talent
tree, but I'm looking at this spirit tap skill on the shadow talent
track as perhaps a very effective method for regaining mana.
So my question is could is use a healing skill like holy nova in
instances, and get the benefit of the spirit tap?

the holy build that i used at lvl60 was a holy dps build:
http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=dVMrzhxzZfxx0cbqbZb
due to the level, i could only get 2/5 spirit tap but it did go off
quite a bit. as you level up the next 3 levels you will be able to fill
it out for 100% chance.
this build is great for both solo'ing and healing. just remember spirit
tap only goes off if you get the killing blow. its hard to do in groups
in instances and such, but once you get sw: death at lvl62 it makes
stealing those killing blows to proc spirit tap a lot easier.

It doesn't say anything about needing the killing blow, just that the
mob needs to yield honor or XP. Haven't tested it out on my priest,
but if it turns out to be true I will definitely not be putting points
in there when I respec. >> Stay informed about: Priest Question |

I'm doubtful of this. Spirit tap only works when you get the killing
blow. As the healer in a party it's unlikely that you'll be able to get
the killing blow, as you're more likely to be healing others than taking
part in the actual killing of mobs, and those chances where you do get
to kill things are likely to be few and far between.

You must get the killing blow to trigger Spirit Tap. Frankly, it would
be waaay too powerful otherwise.

Spirit Tap is the most useful talent you could get for soloing. If you
solo at all, invest in Spirit Tap immediately - it will help reduce
your down-time enormously.
However, in a group, where you are extremely unlikely to get the
killing blow (which Spirit Tap requires), you will find it pretty
useless.
Holy Nova is a most mana-inefficient spell, and not much use for
proccing Spirit Tap, unless you have lots of low-health mobs. I think
it's worth having, though, as it's the only form of AoE we get, and
it's just 1 talent point. Not a necessity though, by any means.

My latest priest is all holy aside from Spirit Tap. Even in
instances, I find spirit tap kicks in quite often - it's not
uncommon for runners to be killed by shadow-word pain ticks or for
me to be wanding in between healing and strike the killing blow that
way. However, to answer the original question, no I don't think holy
nova is a particularly good way to do it - it's mana heavy for what
it does.

A lot of things that require the killing blow neglect to mention this,
but do say that they need honour or XP yielding kills. This is a major
pain, as it really should state the former too.
One thing that really annoys me is when I am playing my priest, and I'm
about to kill a mob, when some "helpful" toon comes along and attacks
the mob I am attacking, thus stealing the killing blow, and I end up
with very little mana left and have to wait twice as long or use a drink
to replenish it.

Only if you get the killing blow which is unlikely with mages, warlocks and
all compared with your holy nova spell.
But for soloing, sure it is a must have spell.
Expect to have more downtime drinking water as a soloing holy priest
compared to a shadow priest. I went to outland as a holy priest, and I had
to switch back to shadow because I found many of the quests real hard as
Holy.

Practice SW:Death use - can really up the rate of killing blows you get in
instances. If you are low on health its worth shielding yourself first just
in case you fire it too early as that hurts, especially if you crit with it.

I don't normally follow up on my own posts, but just a couple of thoughts on
SW:Death,
If I am PvP ing and am about to go down under the inevitable mass of "oh
look, theres a clothie" attackers, if I decide to chuck out a SW:D at the
last moment and cause my own death what happens to
a) the HK ( and in some cases the token that goes with it)*
b) the durability of my armour?
and if I am PvE and do the same, question b is relevant again
*note - I don't expect to get the token myself but wonder if I am depriving
the opposition

If nobody touched you, nobody gets an HK. However in that case you
shouldn't be low on HP (unless you like to jump ledges regularly ).
Same as all PVP encounters.. you don't need to kill in order to be
awarded a HK.
I'm not that clear when you will get a token in PVP (amount of damage
dealt? Amount of estimated honor gotten?) but probably same here. If you
kill yourself with SW:D, it's probably handled exactly the same way as
if you fell down a cliff with low HP and died at impact.
> b) the durability of my armour?
SW:D does not cause 10% durability penalty. Same as warlocks
"selfdestruct" mode in Raids where a wipe is inevitable.
> and if I am PvE and do the same, question b is relevant again
Same here.

I'm pretty sure, no.
