Hi
I've seen this mentioned a few times, but not how to actually do it.
I've got BC, but don't have any chars higher than lvl40. How do I get
this portal? Who can I buy from, how much?

You would buy it from a Mage. You need to group with them, they cast
the spell which creates the portal and then you click on it to step
through.
I think that the cost varies. I've paid 2g and I've paid 5g for it.
One thing that I've noticed the two times that I've needed it -
shouting in trade and general got me no responses. I found a mage in
the same city as I was and politely whispered them offering money for
the service. Both times got me a portal from the first person that I
whispered.
Also note that the mage needs to be level 65 or higher to be able to
cast the spell.
At level 40 there's not much you can do in Shatrath but it can be
useful to set your hearthstone there to be able to travel between
azeroth continents by hearthstoning and jumping through the relevant
portal to the other continent. Personally, I've never found the need
to do that on any of my characters but I've heard other people
recommend it.

I've got my hearthstone set in Shattrath on my level 38 Mage. This is
just for access to the enchanting trainer as, obviously, she already
has easy access to all the capitals.
The other time that I got the portal was on my level 56 paladin as I'd
heard that it was quicker to level by grinding mobs in HFP. That
didn't seem to be true for me so I went back to Azeroth.

Or, if you are in a guild that has people in Shattrat, ask in guild chat for
a mage or a warlock to get you there.

I also try to hearth at the Scryer inn. It's got a lower elevator than the
Aldor inn and hence is survivable if you fall off. (Alas, not possible for

It's fantastic on a shaman with the 15 mins hearthstone cooldown, can
travel really fast between cities that way

The other trick is to auto-hearth using an instance if your hearth is on
cooldown. I was questing in some distant part of Netherstorm the other day
when someone hollered in general chat asking for a quick party. I said
sure, why not, he partied, then unpartied. Then he explained what he'd
done:
Join a party, make the other person leader if necessary, go into an
instance, then leave the party. The instance will auto-hearth you because

Both a warlock and a mage can get you there. The warlock would need to be
in Shattrath and needs 2 more to assist in the summoning ritual. For the
the mage portal, you need a mage that is at least lvl 65 and is somewhere where
you are and a 20s reagent (Rune of Portals). Both warlock (and the assisters) or
a mage needs to be grouped with you for their spell to work.
I find the easiest way to just sit around in Orgrimmar and check with /who
all the over lvl 65 mages around and giving one of them a polite, grammatically
correct, whisper asking for a portal and mentioning that I'm willing to pay
for it. (Usually if you ask them what would be a fair price for the trip, most
often I get the portal either for free or only with the cost of a reagent. No
need to pay more than what is needed.
