Of the 1 time I bought a portal, I asked in the Trade channel in
Orgrimmar and a mage whispered me that they would do it. I paid them
10g for it, mostly because I hate when people ask me for a summon on
my warlock, but also because I had the cash and felt like being nice
since they were also nice to me.

If you're alliance, you could probably do the same in Ironforge. Just
stick to where everyone else seems to hang out the most, and use the
trade channel. It isn't hard to do.

Mages can portal people to shatt at level 65.

Overall though, I've found that most people standing around in IF
don't mind doing them if you pay them the going rate (2g on my
server). I certainly don't mind doing them if I'm not busy and
generally if they ask me how much I'll do it for 1g. Whatever you do
though, DON'T offer them runes for the service . It's annoying if
you offer 1 rune, and if you offer more you're likely going to take up
an extra bag slot of mine now. Just don't do it .

As an amusing story though, one day I was feeling particularly
generous, and when asked for port in the middle of Tanaris I responded
"18s" - the price of just the rune anyways. The toon actually tried
to talk me down to 10s :S. Of course the reverse has happened too.
Had a guy ask me for a port in Silithus and I told him 50s. He said
"I don't have it - would you just accept some enchanting stuff
instead?". I agreed and he then dumped over about 10-12g worth of
enchanting mats.

2 g on my server will get you a port (ANDORHAL) It may take several wispers
to diffrent mages. like anything else in the game ask politly and if they
say no thank them and move on

I get nothing but abuse on my server (Darkspear) for advertising
Portals in the trade channel. People seem to think I should do it for
free.

Heh, what I've found to work best is to use the /who tool to check the
level 70 mages in your area and just giving them a polite whisper. No
plz, or lolz on it and ask to buy the portal from them. I usually
don't offer any set amount of money rather than ask them what would
be a decent price for it. Often it's the price of the rune or
quite often completely free.

You can probably get a ride for 2 gold, but a lot wouldnt bother replying.
4gp would work faster.
A warlock can do a summon for you too but its more difficult to arrange.

When you get there I would recommend setting your hearth so you can make use
of the portals to the major cities for fast transportation.
