No, I should break our vow of "email silence" and then he could start
bugging me that way again, because he already broke that rule, and I'd
get real darn sick of cancelling email accounts all the time. He's
already here and I don't have the right to make him go away so...

Even here, I don't jump into the middle of stuff when I have no clue
what's going on, or I at least *ask* something about it first. There
are things going on here, from long ago before my time, that I just
don't even bother to try to understand or get in the middle of.
You have a "right" to say anything you want and post your uneducated
opinions, and I equally had a right to suggest that you might need to
know enough about things in order to even form an opinion. Commenting
on the *fact* that I posted would be one thing. But you were saying
things that make it very clear that you have absolutely no clue about
certain things. Like your comment about everyone making assessments
based on their own limited experience. Given the circumstances and
context, that comment was totally "off," and you don't know it cause
you don't know what I was talking about. In fact, you were supporting
someone's dillusions.
I have always accepted opinions (even when I disagree) from those who
at least know a little something, and who know me. But I don't even
know who you are.

Never compare yourself to the best others can do,
but rather to the best you can do.
