All that Chet and Steffan said plus the fact that Pikablu was going to
be #152. And that was even after we knew there was going to be GS and
that the starters would have to be # 152-154, 155-157 and 158-160.
And I think well after the Japanese release of Gold and Silver, when
screen shots were everywhere people would still insist that Pikablu
was real etc. And if the translation team had renamed Marill
"Pikablu", I think there would have been riots, at least in some
people's brains. And here.

I was (sadly) a player of the card game long before I was a player of
the video games. My younger brother played, and he built me a deck as
well (this was back in the First Generation of the cards games as
well) that used Pokemon Breeder to turn Weedles into Beedrills.
Probably NOT the best use for Pokemon Breeders. *laugh* I had an
Eevee deck (technically, a Flareon deck) and so consequently I was
always interested in the Eevee-lutions. Starting XD with an Eevee was
probably one of the reasons I stuck with it! Mine turned into an
Umbreon -- that was unexpected. Starting Colosseum with Umbreon and
Espeon was cool too.
Needless to say, I have all seven Eevee-lutions in Pearl.
I think one thing that the Gamecube games DON'T teach you is how to
catch wild Pokemon. With the Gamecube games, if there's a Shadow
Pokemon for you to catch and you knock it out, you can go back to that
trainer pretty much continuously, and they will always use it, and you
get multiple attempts to catch it. There are very few "wild" Pokemon
-- I don't think there are ANY in XD, and very few in Colosseum, as I
recall. So it took some getting used to, having to make your "one
shot" count. I'm pretty sure I killed my Azelf and Uxie. At least, I
haven't seen them back in their caves since I knocked them out ... I
just found Articuno in FR and I'm afraid to even attempt to catch it.

Lucky you. Finding Emerald below $45 here is next to impossible - and
second-hand ones go for $40. :/ [FR/LG go for $25 new, haven't seen
used, and R/S also go for $40 used, but I've not seen new ones in the
stores since FR/LG came out]

And since I lost my other games (yes, I had all 5 and lost them and
feel very very sad) this was why I was doing all those lists. I could
repost them if you like. But suddenly I am puzzled by how one gets
the GSC (I think) starters. I think Colusium is the only way, IIRC.
weird.
And you can still get all those other pokes by either trading in
person (or whatever you desire to call Pal Pad or Union room) or using
the GTS. But you have to at least see the pokes first for the GTS,
and I think that the Battle Tower will have them (still too chicken to
go in). Or something. I have a couple of the Game Slot pokes because
I saw them and asked for them on the GTS.
There are 29 Swarming pokes (one a day, but they repeat and it could
take a while, you can't change what the poke of the day is). There
are 48 Pal Park or Trade pokes (starters and Legendaries from the
other games). 20 each game of Diamond or Pearl exclusives (for some
reason the evolutions are all on my list even though I doubt you can
catch an Aggron, but whatever). Around 17 Safari pokes, around 16
Mansion pokes (but you can breed the babies, one a day but you can
change it by saving and restarting if it's a poke you don't want),
around 9 Honey Tree pokes (8 evolutions from them), and then 6 or so
Game Slot pokes each from FRLG, and 5 each from RSE (not including all
the evolutions from them somehow). And 44 PokeRadar pokes, not
excluding Diamond or Pearl exclusives and not including evolutions
from them. Then there are 4 trade pokes and 12 trade with item pokes
(you can catch a Steelix, so I don't really count it) and I still need
3 of them (Dusknoir needs a Dusclops, Magmortar needs Magmar, a slot
poke that I don't have, Electivire needs an Electabuzz, another slot
poke I don't have).

You need to have completed the GameCube games at the very least - by which I
mean beat the final boss; you don't necessarily have to catch and purify
everything. You can then trade to Ruby and Sapphire whenever you like
(though they won't register these Pokémon in the Dex unless you've unlocked
the National Dex). To trade to FL, you need to have unlocked the National
Dex - which requires a subquest after completing the main game. I'm not
sure about Emerald, but I'd hazard the guess that you need to have unlocked
the National Dex again.
In terms of hardware, though, as well as the whole GameCube set-up, you need
a GameBoy Advance (the DS won't work) and a GBA-GC link cable (these come
free with certain games, but generally, you'd have to buy them separately -
over here, there are some cheap third-party ones you can pick up.)
> I don't think my 'dexes

I believe that between them, Diamond and Pearl contain every Pokémon apart
from 48 - these are the starters and legendaries of the GameBoy games. Of
these 48, from memory ... you can catch Bayleef, Quilava, Croconaw, Raikou,
Entei and Suicune in Colosseum, and Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres and Lugia in
XD. You can also aquire a Ho-oh in Coli by completing the battle mode.
Assuming you breed the starters, that accounts for 17 of the 48 Pokémon.
The remainder require the GameBoy games - starters and Mewtwo from FL,
starters, Regi[rock/steel/ce], Groudon, Kyogre, Rayquaza, Latios and Latias
from RSE, plus Mew, Celebi, Jirachi and Deoxys from various events.
Otherwise, everything is obtainable, and the ones that don't seem to be
probably swarm, turn up in the trophy garden or safari zone, can be caught
in new areas or with the super rod ... or, of course, through plugging the
GBA games into the GBA slot of the DS. I hadn't thought of that last one
until now - that probably boosts the number of unobtainable Pokémon without
the games.

Actually, you could go onto the S.S. Anne and get cut, then fight
someone and faint all your pokemon. Then you'd get transferred to the
pokemon center and the ship would still be there.
Thus there is no trading needed. You can still get them in order.

I traded all three of the pixie things from Marco's game (he bought it
used) before he restarted it to play. So if you want mine, you can have
them

I am still trying to get your starters, but unfortunately my opposable

I have them all done apart from three, I'll try and get Lucy to help out
by doing them. I'm very sorry that it has taken me so long.

You had a game cart in! Sure, I would love an Elekid (rte 205
south lvl 10 or Valley Windworks lvl 9). And you would like a Tropius
or Smoochum for it? Do you want any stones or fossils attached? And
for the other one, do you have an Ekans (rte 212 south lvl 18-20) or
Arbok (Safari game I think Lvl 20-26) or Caterpie (rte 204 lvl 6) or
Metapod (Eterna forest lvl 12) all with FR in the game slot. Any of
those would be good, Metapod being the best of that lot.
And did you read about how to increase your chances of Wild Pokes
holding Items (my post)? Have something with the Ability CompoundEyes
(like Nincada) first in your party, you can faint it if you like (it
shouldn't matter anyway if you want to level it up (and there is a
neat thing with this poke, have an empty spot on your party when you
get the Nincada near 20 and have at least 1 pokeball and when it
evolves there will be 2 pokes)), then have something with the Ability
of Frisk (Shuppet, Banette, Stantler (I use a Stantler, and more on
this later) to let you know when the wild poke has an item (the odds
aren't great or anything, 5% of the time for most items on most pokes
without the Compoundeyes and I have no idea how much the Ability
helps). If you are leveling up the Nincada (or whoever you found with
then you will want to switch in the Frisk poke, if you have the
Compoundeyes poke fainted, have the Frisk poke second so it comes out
and frisks automatically. Then you need something to take the Item
from the wild poke (unless you really want to catch the poke). So a
move like Thief or Covet is needed.
I am trying to level up my Mightyena to level 57 (I think, it's very
far away right now but it is traded so it's gaining 1.5x the
experience) for it to learn Thief and then I can breed it with a
Stantler and have a Thieving Frisker.
Anyway, the upshot of all this is to steal the occasional good item
from wild pokes. Like Electrizer from Elekid to evolve Electabuzz
into Electivire.

No problem. I have more Bidoof for you (2 from me and two from my
friend, one each for Lucy and you). And maybe I can get two from my
nephew this weekend (it's Thanksgiving here in Canada, and the Leafs
have already lost 2 games to the Sens. (Montreal won their game
against Carolina 3-2 and they play the Leafs on Saturday ))

The GSC starters are available (one per cart, of course) in Emerald when
you complete the Hoenn 'dex. (or is it when you open the National? I

Well, I found that I had NOT, in fact, killed Azelf last night. I
went to the cave to look and lo and behold, there he were. So I start
out the battle with Salamence, pick his lowest-damage attack (Dragon
Claw) (figuring that using False Swipe with Weavile will take FOREVER
so I'm just going to wear him down a little) ... and of course
Salamence crits and OHKOs him.
Needless to say, I did NOT save the game after that. *laugh*
