A soft wind played over the grass as the sun crept up over the
forested path leading to Fortree City. Within a small clearing stood a
tall young woman, her long brown hair swaying in the wind. In her
right hand, tightly clutched, was a Poké Ball.

While it hadn't been all that long ago since she'd been granted the
small spheroid, it had felt like months for Alexandria Masters. What
time she'd spent hadn't been wasted; a gym battle, a brief trip to a
Magma outpost, and her current journey, a short trip back to Fortree
City before she got back to what she'd been doing in Fortree before
all of this had started.

But the Poké Ball in her hand was very much a part of it.

She and several other members of the Search Party for Smasher had
entered the Fortree Doubles Tournament in the hopes of finding their
objective, Adam 'Smasher' Samson. Unfortunately for them, the Smasher
they encountered was false, a Ditto with his memories and Pokémon that
had managed to fool all of them. With that revelation also came
another; that one of Smasher's Pokémon, the massive Arcanine known as
Rush, had been converted into a Shadow Pokémon, little more than a
heartless weapon. It was Rush who now rested in that small Poké
Ball...just as he had since Alex had been given him at tournament's
end.

"You know child, indecision and you are hardly a good match."

She turned to the speaker. "Can you blame me for being a little
worried?"

"Not really, no." Schwester Schatten stepped forward. "However, you
seem to be losing sight of your priorities. When Rush fell into your
custody, you promised yourself that you'd do what you could to restore
him for Smasher's sake. Whether alive or dead, you knew Smasher would
rather his Pokémon be whole than a cruel version of his former self.
And yet, you've done nothing to fix the problem, beyond keep him with
you."

Alex shrugged. "A lot's come up."

"Yes, but you've been actively avoiding letting him out as well."
The helmeted ninja surveyed her carefully. "You've looked into methods
of purifying Shadow Pokémon. You know full well that the best method
to rid them of that taint is to battle with them, and you've been
purposely keeping him out of battle."

The girl averted her eyes, looking at her boot-clad feet. "Is that
a bad thing?"

"It is for Rush." Schwester stepped forward and laid her hands upon
the teen's shoulders. "I know full well you are sensitive to unusual
auras. The aura cast by Shadow Pokémon is especially unusual, and you
can't help but sense it. But as much as it pains you, you must battle
with Rush, and bring him back to himself."

"Who with?" Alex's eyes slowly tilted up as she looked into the
lenses of the ninja's helmet. "I can't ask Wanda; she's reluctant to
battle. Amber and Jason have their own problems. And no one else is
present. What am I supposed to do, risk a bunch of wild Pokémons'
lives bringing back a Pokémon more than three times their level of
strength?"

Schwester smiled beneath her face mask. "No child. You face a
trainer equal to Rush in terms of strength." She withdrew her hands,
then suddenly leapt backwards, landing on her high-heeled feet and
standing upright as she withdrew a Poké Ball of her own. "You face
me."

"What...but...!"

"Doth the lady protest?" The ninja's voice grew taunting. "The same
girl who entered the Silver Conference despite the odds against her?
The same girl who has faced bounty hunters, demons, and would prove
herself a hero? Or have you finally learned the meaning of the word
'surrender'?"

Both hands tightened. Eyes narrowed. "I never surrender."

"Then prove it girl."

Alex nodded. "Consider challenge accepted." She raised her right
arm and threw the Poké Ball into the air declaring, "Rush! Let's get
extreme!"

"Raijin! Come forth!"

As the two Pokémon materialized, a chill raced up and down
Alexandria's spine. This had been the first time Alex had ever brought
Rush out for a battle, and she'd been loathing that moment with good
reason.

He was very much the same large Arcanine as before, physically at
least. Those who did not know him before, or those who had not the
same sensitivity as Alex, would not know any different. But the large
canine was indeed different. A heavy aura shrouded him, causing Alex
to grit her teeth as it radiated away from his body. His paws dug into
the ground, and his fiery, striped fur appeared even more vicious than
before. His large eyes looked upon the Raichu opposite and her
trainer, and surveyed them with interest.

"Chicas..." he growled, "...muerte..."

Alex had never been good with Spanish, but she knew enough. "Rush,
go! Shadow Blitz!"

"Raijin, Agility!"

The shadowy aura around the massive flaming canine intensified as
he charged, the much smaller electric rodent darting to one side just
as the blow hit. She took damage, but it was mitigated slightly by her
quick movement.

"Shadow Blitz again!"

"Thunder!"

Once more, Rush charged. This time the blow hit, but the massive
canine found himself bombarded with a heavy burst of electrical
energy. He staggered back, shaking himself violently as he recovered.

"Shadow Wave!"

"Agility!"

A ball of purplish energy charged in Rush's mouth. He spat it out
violently, sending multiple pulses of light at his target. Raijin
managed to dodge most, but one hit its mark perfectly.

"Shadow Blitz!"

"And Thunder once more!"

One more Rush charged, and one more his charge was met with a
massive burst of lightning. This time however, something else happened
along with the lightning burst. As he recovered, his aura shifted,
going from the purplish energy that Alex perceived at the start of the
battle to a pulsating form, rapidly shifting between black and blood
red.

Alex cringed as the same chill she'd faced earlier intensified. Her
eyes barely open as the aura's radiation gave her pain, she cried out,
"Shadow Blitz!"

"Dig!"

Raijin leapt skyward, then dug into the ground, burrowing deep to
protect herself as the raging Arcanine surged forward. He growled,
then charged again as Raijin emerged and attacked, both Pokémon taking
damage...though Rush much greater.

Despite all her efforts, however, Alex faced her own pain. This was
like nothing she'd felt before...such darkness, such directionless
rage, all wrapped up around a closed heart and an entombed soul. She
couldn't fight it off...

Her tightened fists relaxed as thoughts came to her. Memories, old
pain from long ago. The death of her father. The revelations
concerning her heritage. Her mother's passing. Her defeat at the hands
of the new Hunters some time prior. All of that had caused her pain,
physical and spiritual.

Yet she was still standing. She hadn't run from any of those pains,
she'd confronted them head-on. And she'd beaten them.

This was no different.

Her eyes opened, a determined expression on her face. "Rush!"

The massive canine halted, and shook himself. Suddenly, the blood
red and black aura faded back into the purple, and the purple itself
was weaker.

As electricity arced through Raijin's tail, Alex's lips curled into
a smile. "You can't run from the pain or the sorrow. You have to face
it, or it'll always control you. Rush, Shadow Blitz!"

The massive canine charged again, hitting his opponent dead-on.
Raijin flew through the air for a brief second, then fell unconscious
as she hit the ground.

Schwester smiled beneath her helmet as she produced a Revive.
Meanwhile, Alex approached Rush, her steps firm and her back straight.
"Rush, do you remember me?"

The canine looked at her. The same expression that had been in his
eyes when he surveyed Schwester and Raijin was still there, though not
as prominent. It seemed softer...less dangerous. "Alex?"

The girl nodded. "Smasher's missing. I don't know where he is. I
wish I did. But until I find him, you're stuck with me. And when I do
find him, I want him to have all of his team back, whole and safe."
She reached out her hands and held the sides of the canine's head. "I
don't know how this happened to you, or who did it. But I don't think
you want to stay this way, do you?"

Rush's expression was unreadable. Alex could feel it, his mind
seeking out memories and feelings. Most were faint, deadened by
shadow, but the clouds were beginning to be pierced. Having him with
her, battling with her, had been enough to get the ball rolling.

But a few seemed to be the stronger focus of his efforts...those were
the ones most shrouded in shadow.

"Do you want to remember?"

She didn't need to read his face or his mind to get the answer this
time. "Si."

"I'll help you. I promise."

She gently leaned forward and touched her forehead to his, giving
the canine a gentle embrace. Then she ended it, and recalled him to
his Poké Ball. At last, she turned to her benefactor. "Thank..."

But Schwester had disappeared once more.

The brunette smirked. Without another word, she turned and trooped
back to the campsite. Amber, Jason and Wanda would be up soon; they'd
need a good breakfast before they finished their trip back to Fortree,
and before Alex got back to what she'd set out to do.

She'd been wasting far too much time. She needed answers, and she
was going to get them.

After staring a campfire and preparing a complete breakfast for her current
party, Alex wanders away from the campfire over to where Elsa is sleeping
and says, "Wake up, Wanda! It's time for breakfast!"

"Mmmrrrrmmrrm," groans Elsa from within the soft green sleeping bag that
Alex loaned her, clutching the green Grass Cushion that came with the bag.
She had stayed wide awake through most of the night, concerned about falling
asleep near the gender-swapped renegades she's been traveling with lately
and worried that the land shark she spotted earlier would tear her apart in
her sleep if she dozed off.

"Fine, I'll go wake up the others first. I'll be back in five minutes."

"Mmmm," moans Elsa, pleased to hear the sound of dried fallen leaves being
crushed under Alex's boots as the tall woman walks away from her. The
sleeping bag she's in is so comfortable and the early morning sounds of the
wilderness surrounding her are so relaxing that she loses consciousness a
mere five seconds after her would-be awakener leaves her be.

Roughly five minutes later, Alex once again wanders over to the sleeping bag
she loaned Elsa and repeats, "Wake up, Wanda! It's time for breakfast!"

"Mmmhmm," responds Wanda, recognizing the voice of the woman who Sven and
Peabody found to help her with the abdominal injury that her Shuppet
inflicted upon her. Her eyes still closed, she rubs one hand on her abdomen
and she's pleased to find that she can do so without feeling pain. When she
opens her eyes, she's confused that she's presently in a green sleeping bag
clutching a Grass Cushion instead of on a Surf Mat clutching a Water Cushion
under a soft blue duvet. She unzips the sleeping bag and pokes her head
out, curious about her current location.

Alex watches Wanda's head, which is partially obscured by
even-frizzier-than-usual dark brown hair, turn from side to side as the
young woman gazes at the wilderness comprising Route 120.

Once she's done taking in her surroundings, Wanda looks up at Alex and
comments, "I'm all for natural cures, but was it really necessary to bring
me outside the Secret Base behind the waterfall in order to treat my
abdominal pain? Not that I mind being in the great outdoors, and not that I
don't feel better, because I do... It just seems a bit unorthodox."

"Oh dear..." Alex furrows her brow as she asks Wanda, "You don't remember
anything about the trip we made to the Team Magma Base at Mount Chimney to
retrieve your captured Pokemon?"

Having been stirred into consciousness by the conversation outside the
sleeping bag, Wanda's Roselia pokes her head out of one of the bag's
interior pockets and looks over at her companion with her squinted eyes.
The Thorn Pokemon asks the young woman she's sharing the sleeping bag with,
"Elsel? Ro sel ia?"

Wanda glances down at Roselia's head and exclaims, "Roselia! I'm so glad to
see you again! Is it true that you were captured by Team Magma?"

Roselia promptly juts her red flower out of the interior pocket she's in and
slams her limb against her own forehead, "Rose ro..."

"Is something wrong, Roselia?" asks Wanda, not sure why the Grass Pokemon
seems frustrated.

"Sell..."

"Hey wait," interrupts Wanda before Roselia gets a chance to complain about
the difficulties of traveling with someone who has multiple personalities,
"If you and I were reunited, then that probably means Mudkip's around here
somewhere too!" The teenager scoots out of Alex's green sleeping bag,
stands up, and calls out, "Mudkip! Oh, Mudkip! Come out, come out wherever
you are!"

Roselia crawls out of the sleeping bag muttering to herself, annoyed that
her companion's present personality so blatantly favors Mudkip's
companionship over her own. Figuring that Wanda might appreciate her more
if she helps the girl find her Mudkip, the Grass Pokemon climbs up Wanda's
leg, careful not to prick her friend with any of her thorns, unzips the
brown fanny pack hanging from Wanda's waist, and starts rummaging through
the contents of the pack.

Wanda looks down and notices that she's now wearing her green tank top,
black capri pants, brown fanny pack, and golden anklet. The teenage girl
lets out a sigh of relief and says, "This outfit is so much better than that
horrible Team Magma uniform I was wearing before! What are you looking for,
Roselia?"

"Rose!" Roselia replies, pulling a standard Pokeball out of Wanda's fanny
pack. She lets the Pokeball drop to the ground. When the spherical device
hits the ground, it snaps open and out pops a young Mudkip who immediately
starts chasing his own tail fin.

"Kip! Kip! Kip!" pipes the cheerful Mudkip as he runs around in circles in a
vain effort to catch up with his tail fin.

"Awwwww, how cuuuuute!" Wanda coos, her gaze having settled on the adorable
Water Pokemon the moment he appeared.

"Selrose!" curses Roselia as she hops down from Wanda's leg, bothered that
Wanda was not considerate enough to thank her for releasing the Mudkip that
the teen finds so very enthralling.

"Wait a minute, if Mudkip was trapped inside a Pokeball in my fanny pack,
maybe I have other Pokemon stuck within Pokeballs too..." Wanda reaches
into her fanny pack and feels around for shrunken Pokeballs. The first ball
she withdraws is a Luxury Ball, which she figures must be the one that
contains the disturbed Shuppet who attacked her before she last lost
consciousness. "I don't like keeping Pokemon in Pokeballs, but I'll make an
exception for you since you're just a wee bit too rowdy for my tastes." She
continues to rummage through the pack with her free hand and then withdraws
another standard red and white Pokeball. "Hmm, I wonder what's in this
Pokeball..." She casually tosses the Pokeball to the ground.

The flash of red light that exits the Pokeball when it hits the ground
settles into the form of an unconscious Chimchar.

"Oh my, how long was this Pokemon stuck in that dreadful Pokeball?" Looking
over to Alex with a concerned look on her face, Wanda asks, "Is she...
dead?"

"No, she's just unconscious," Alex explains, "You can use the Revive I gave
you yesterday to help her recover."

"You gave me a Revive?" Wanda asks. After Alex nods her head, Wanda sifts
through the belongings in her fanny pack a third time and withdraws a light
yellow capsule. "Thank you so much! You're such a good friend... uh, I'm
sorry, what's your name?"

Now realizing Wanda's mental condition is even worse than she originally
thought, the tall brown-haired girl simply answers, "Alex."

"You're such a good friend, Alex!"

"Sel!" humphs Roselia, turning away from Wanda and crossing her arms in
front of her leaf-covered chest, jealous that Wanda thanked Alex for the
Revive but didn't thank her for her assistance earlier.

Not sure what's bothering Roselia, but more concerned with reviving the
Chimchar that was trapped in the Pokeball she was carrying, Wanda bends down
and slips the Revive into the unconscious Fire Pokemon's mouth.

Within seconds, the Chimp Pokemon coughs and groggily sits up, finally
waking up from the battle she lost against a crimson Scizor. The revived
Chimchar reaches up and rubs her head, which is still aching in the spot
that was gently struck by the Scizor's Metal Claw. "Chiiim... chaaaaar..."
When she opens her eyes, the first thing she sees is Wanda's Mudkip, who is
still frantically stalking his own posterior appendage. Having been trained
to hate all Water Pokemon by the Magma Scientist who raised her, the
Chimchar starts snarling at the Mudkip. Though she has not fully recovered
from her loss against the Scizor, Chimchar jumps up and charges Mudkip. The
Fire Pokemon knocks the Water Pokemon on his back and starts furiously
Scratching at his underbelly.

"Kiiip mud mud!" giggles Mudkip, believing the Chimchar is just playfully
roughhousing with him. To fight back, he Mud-Slaps her with the tail fin he
was just chasing and exclaims, "Mudkip, mud!"

The Ground-Type attack sends the Chimchar reeling! She steadies herself on
her knuckles and Leers at the Mudkip who's now just panting happily with his
mouth wide open. The Mud-Slap weakened her considerably, so Chimchar thinks
twice about attacking the Water Pokemon again. Instead, she bides her time,
deciding she should wait to be fully healed before trying to take him down
again.

Having watched the fight that broke out and realizing Chimchar's motive was
not to play with Mudkip, Roselia glances at the Fire Pokemon warily, worried
that she might end up harming Wanda's favorite Pokemon. Though she doesn't
like that Wanda prefers Mudkip, Roselia doesn't want anyone to hurt her
innocent, happy-go-lucky teammate. She considers trying to warn Wanda that
she shouldn't trust Chimchar, but she decides that doing so would be a
wasted effort since Wanda seems to be ignoring her and she continues to sulk
instead.

Concentrating only on the present mood of her jolly Mudkip, Wanda remarks to
Alex, "Pokemon are so much happier when they're allowed to roam free!
Especially when their human companions are out in the wild as they travel
from place to place. Speaking of which... Where are we headed?"

"Fortree City," replies Alex. "It's not far from here."

"Ah. I have one more question."

"Hmm?"

"What's the deal with the two crossdressers having breakfast by the campfire
over there?"

-Elsa

Alex gave a quick glance towards Amber and Jason, the two gender-
swapped individuals already sampling and enjoying their meal. "They
aren't really cross dressing. Amber and Jason had their genders
swapped yesterday, and no one has any clothing that matches their
current dimensions. So they're stuck wearing ill-fitting clothing. It
wasn't willing either."

"Oh...I'm so sorry for them. Is there anything we can do?"

"Get them some properly-fitting clothes, but not much beyond that."
Alex gave a gentle nod towards the waiting food. "C'mon, before they
eat everything."

-

Chimchar continued to cast a glare at Mudkip even as the Water-type
rolled about eagerly in the grass. She had to get rid of the Mudkip,
before he did the same to her. She just knew that its 'playful puppy'
act was little more than that...an act.

"<Ahem.>"

The tiny chimp turned and looked up...and up...and up...into the
emerald eyes and burnt orange beak of a Blaziken. In his claws was a
bowl of Poké-Chow.

"<I'd be less concerned with the Mudkip, and more concerned with
your meal.>" Surtur placed the tray down beside her, then sat down
himself. "<Now, a little advice from one Fire-type to another...>"

"<I don't need your advice, Chicken Little.>" The little red ape
sharply took a bit of chow and bit into it.

Surtur kept his gaze upon the smaller Fire-type even as Mudkip's
lolling about found him bumping into the leg of a much larger, much
greener Pokémon. He righted himself, shook his head and tail, then
looked upon the larger Pokémon. "Kip! Kip kip kip!"

Interrupted from her own meal was a Meganium. Nadyra's eyes grew
wide before she turned to look upon the tiny Water-type. "Meg?"

"Mudkip!" The smaller Pokémon crouched his front down low, shaking
his tail to violently that his raised rear end shook with each wag.

Relieved that the little amphibian only wished to play, Nadyra
smiled. "Nium!" She moved to nuzzle the little Mudkip affectionately,
her smooth-scaled skin touching his slime-coated body.

It was when it came that close that she noticed the smell.

"Ganium!"

-

"I still don't get why you cook such big meals." Amber scooped
another mess of eggs onto his plate as he looked upon the chef. "I
mean, no offense Alex, but you don't look that big. In terms of
weight, I mean."

"None taken." Alex halved a sausage patty with her fork as she
answered the former girl's question. "It's a few things really. I've
got a very active metabolism, plus an active lifestyle. Put them
together, and it adds up to one very hungry young woman. I've actually
been underweight for years; I'm hoping this new diet of mine'll help
me put on the pounds and keep them."

"Wait, you want to put on weight?" Jason looked perplexed. "I
thought girls tried for the opposite."

"I'm six-feet-three-inches and one-hundred-sixty pounds Jason. I
need to keep it that way."

"<Alex?>"

The brunette looked up to find Daraxis and Nadyra standing behind
her, Wanda's Mudkip cradled in the Blastoise's arms. "Hmm? What's
wrong?"

"Ni Mega meg ah meg."

An eyebrow cocked, Alex leaned over at the eagerly panting Water-
type. She gave him a small sniff, then moved back with a slightly
green face. She gagged slightly, but contained herself. "Wanda, would
you mind if my Pokémon gave your Mudkip a bath?"

Nadyra looked upon the bushy-haired girl with massive pleading
eyes. The effort proved unnecessary, as Wanda smiled contentedly.
"Mudkip doesn't mind the water. Go right ahead!"

Her words were greeted with an affectionate nuzzle from Nadyra and
a nod from Daraxis, who moved off to a nearby stream to give the tiny
amphibian a scrub.

"Aww, you're welcome Meganium!" Wanda scratched the Grass-type's
head between her antennae, eliciting a smile from Nadyra in the
process.

"I thought Nadyra was shy around people," Amber posed.

"No, she likes people. It's battling that she has issue with." Alex
gave a nervous laugh. "She had a run-in with a Salamence one time,
never quite got over it."

-

"Elsel..." Roselia shook her head in a mix of sadness and
irritation at her trainer and her condition. She liked Elsa as Elsa;
Elsa as any one else was not only confusing, but a pain to deal with
as her other personalities either ignored her or didn't care much for
her.

"Candy for your thoughts?"

Roselia looked upon the offered treat, then the Murkrow who held it
in his tiny claw. As she got most of her nutrients from sunlight and
wasn't entirely trusting of the bird, she politely refused. "Ro sel.
Ro selie."

"Sounded like something to me." ShadowWarrior returned the M&M to
its bag, then scooted it aside. "Now everyone I've heard says you need
to talk about a problem if you have one. You can talk to me if you
want." Roselia turned away, leaving the Murkrow to sigh. "Look, I can
understand you not being trusting. I know how important secrets are -
my trainer and I have a couple ourselves. But we aren't stupid either.
If you know something, please, tell me."

Roselia shook her head. As much as Elsa may have snubbed her when
she wasn't properly Elsa, she still liked her and cared for her - she
wouldn't betray her. "Rose rosel...sel ro rose."

ShadowWarrior kept his eyes on Roselia, then turned away and gave a
soft chuckle. "It does me good to see someone like you." The Grass-
type gave him an uneasy look before he amended, "You care about her.
You're loyal. That's something to be admired. She's lucky to have
you."

While not entirely trusting of the Murkrow beside her, Roselia was
slightly relieved at his explanation. Her relief shifted to concern,
however, as the ground started to shift beneath her tiny feet.

Both plant and bird looked as one towards nearby clumps of bushes
as a large indigo fin, emerging from the ground, advanced towards
them.

-

"Then she decides to act like she's blind for him..."

"ALEX! LAND SHARK!"

Her eyes widened in fear, Alex turned around as the fin rumbled
towards the gathered trainers. While Amber, Jason and Wanda rose to
their feet, Alex remained frozen in place.

"What is that?" Jason asked, suddenly glad she had a much smaller
appetite.

"Whatever it is, I hope it's friendly." Amber's eyes darted from
the fin, to Alex's petrified form, to the fin, to..."Alex?"

The tall girl sat in place, shocked into fear of the
(pointysharpbiting) fin and all that it (lotsandlotsofteeth) entailed.
She couldn't even move as the fin slowed, and the rest of the Pokémon
popped from the ground.

"Gible?"

It took a millisecond for her blood to continue pumping. Another
millisecond for her to exhale. As she took several deep breaths, she
looked upon their guest. "I'm sorry...I thought you were a Sharpedo."

The chubby finned Pokémon, while unaware of what a Sharpedo was,
knew that she wasn't such a thing. She shook her head, which basically
meant her entire body. "Gible."

Regaining her composure, Alex began piecing things together. "We
must've attracted you, what with us being all loud and everything.
Plus the food; you must be famished."

The land shark gave an eager expression. "Gible!"

Taking hold of a discarded bowl of Poké-Chow, Alex placed it before
the Pokémon. "Eat up then. Go ahead."

"Gible!" The elated Pokémon happily dived into her meal.

The others sat down slowly. Amber looked at the shark uneasily.
"So...what is that?"

"She's a Gible, Ground/Dragon type native to Sinnoh. Kinda like
their Larvitar or Dratini; you can only find them in one place and
there aren't many of 'em." She leaned forward and regarded the Pokémon
thoughtfully. "I just wondering what she's doing here."

The Gible looked up from her meal thankfully. "Geeb geeb gible!
Geeb bull geeb gible geeb...!"

"Whoa, slow down." Amber knelt beside Alex. "Now, slowly."

The Gible stopped and took a breath, then started again. While Alex
was unable to understand the Pokémon's speech, she was easily able to
grasp her tone and intent. Amber, fortunately, could understand just
fine.

"Okay, I think I get it. She says that she used to live in a cave
before some men came and took her. She got moved somewhere here, then
got broken out a long while ago."

"Odd how you just run into us, huh?" ShadowWarrior deposited
Roselia next to her trainer, then gave the Gible a sympathetic smile.

"I did hear something about a criminal operation involving Pokémon
being shut down a while ago; she probably came from there." Alex
gently laid a hand upon the Gible's nose and rubbed it. "Well, if you
want, you can come along with us."

"Gible!" The elated Ground-type scrambled towards Alex and
affectionately rubbed against her belly.

Despite herself, Alex laughed. "Okay, alright...just keep where we
can see you, okay?"

Her shark-like admirer jumped back and nodded gleefully, giving a
"Gible" in assent.

Alex smiled, and exhaled thankfully. "Then welcome to the bunch."
She looked around and asked, "She didn't shake anyone up, right?"

[NS: I realise that Mudkip's natural layer of slime probably protects
it from bacteria and the like...but it plays around in toilets. I've
been wanting a chance to give the little guy a bath for ages.
Meanwhile, what was Elsa's reaction to Gible's emergence?]

"She didn't shake me up," replies Wanda, crouching down to get a closer look
at the Land Shark Pokemon. "But I do think she's a fascinating specimen."

"Fascinating specimen?" Alex repeats, raising an eyebrow. "You're not
planning on conducting an experiment on her, are you?"

Gasping at the thought, the Gible exclaims, "Geeeeeb!"

"Oh, no, of course not!" Wanda says, shaking her head in response to Alex's
question. "I'm not a scientist. I just think this Pokemon single-finnedly
proves each and every tenet held by Team Aqua."

The Roselia in the group lowers her head in shame and covers her face with
her blue flower, certain that her companion is about to launch into a
nonsensical rant regarding the fanatical organization her current
personality adores.

"This Gible is proof positive that there is simply not enough water on this
planet compared with the overwhelming amount of land!" Wanda declares in an
indignant tone, prompting Roselia to shake her head in embarrassment.
Unaware of the Grass Pokemon's body language since she's addressing Alex
directly, Wanda continues, "This poor Pokemon species has clearly been
forced to adapt over time to the encroachment of earth propagated by the
likes of Team Magma. I imagine that this Pokemon's water-loving ancestors
used to swim wherever they pleased throughout a vast tropical sea when
suddenly a colossal volcano erupted from the briny depths, killing most of
them and leaving only a few behind to mutate into Ground Type Pokemon in the
newly formed terrain. I am sure that once upon a time this mighty Pokemon
species reigned over all the oceans of the world, but they are now
critically endangered mutants restricted to a single, bleak, pitch-black
cave in the Sinnoh region. What a horrible tragedy..."

"Gible, gible..." laments the now teary-eyed Gible, having vividly imagined
the scenario that Wanda described.

Alex argues, "That's not necessarily the origin of Gible. Maybe they always
lived in the ground in caves and the Gible that grew large dorsal fins were
most suited to break through rocks blocking the path to other Gible so they
were the ones who were able to breed, resulting in Gible descendants with
large shark-like dorsal fins."

"Gible!" the Gible exclaims, proud of her large dorsal fin.

"Always lived in the ground in caves?!" Wanda repeats with an incredulous
look on her face. "Not likely. Why would they look so much like Sharpedo,
a WATER Pokemon, if that were the case?"

"Gib geeb," concedes the Gible, now more confused than ever about the origin
of her species.

Alex points out, "I'm not saying I know everything about the natural habitat
of Gible or that I'm an expert on Gible development. I'm just saying you
shouldn't jump to conclusions."

Amber adds in his now gruff voice, "I agree with Alex. It's jumping to
conclusions led you to assume I'm evil, and that is definitely NOT the
case."

"Yeah!" Jason chimes in with her now high-pitched voice, "And I'm not a
criminal! ...well, technically I am, but that's beside the point!"

"What are you talking about?" Wanda asks Amber, crossing her arms. "I
haven't called you evil. Why would I call you evil?"

"K, so maybe it was vicious instead of evil," concedes Amber. "I think you
called me both though. Anyway, even if I don't remember the exact words, my
point is I'm a good girl... er, guy... er, whatever."

"I don't remember calling you vicious OR evil," Wanda admits. "But to set
the record straight, since I just met you and you haven't done anything to
make me think you're a bad person, I have no problem with you." Turning to
address Alex, the green-eyed girl adds, "I don't have a problem with you
either, Alex. Any friend of Sven and Peabody is a friend of mine. I just
think your theory about Gible is baseless. Since neither of us are
scientists, I think we should take this Gible to the nearest Team Aqua
Research Facility for further study." She rummages through the brown fanny
pack tied around her waist for a moment before asking Alex, "Do you happen
to have the map Team Aqua gave you when you joined the organization? I seem
to have misplaced mine."

Jason and Amber gave one another a sideways glance...Wanda had
regarded them with so much suspicion earlier. Why the change in
attitude?

Unlike the gender-swapped couple, Alex had a better idea of just
what had happened with Wanda...though she wasn't inclined to reveal
it. "Wanda, I'm not a member of Team Aqua."

The shorter girl looked at her, glanced over to the slightly
confused couple beside her, then leaned in carefully. "Alex, you don't
need to lie in front of them."

"I'm not lying - I'm not part of Team Aqua. After you were injured,
Sven and Peabody contacted me. There isn't a hospital willing to treat
an agent of either team under the radar, and I happen to be related to
a very discreet physician."

Now it was Wanda's turn to be confused. "How did they know you were
related to a physician?"

"And who are Sven and Peabody?" Jason asked.

Alex turned to the former man and explained, "Sven and Peabody are
two agents of Team Aqua. Their immediate superior, a guy named Leif,
had them keeping watch over me briefly. As part of that, they met a
great aunt of mine."

"The discreet physician," Amber reasoned.

"Bingo." The tall brunette turned her full attention back on Wanda.
"As for why Leif wanted a watch kept on me, it's a long story." She
turned to the others. "I'm assuming you guys know about the two Teams
and their conflict here in Hoenn, right?"

Amber leaned back, trying his best to relax for what was probably
going to be a long story. "We've got the gist of it."

"Well, in conflicts like that, one side's going to try and have an
edge over the other. A few years ago, Team Aqua raided a Pokémon
research facility to try and get an edge. They managed to get away
with a copy of the facility's breeding research, but not before a
member of the staff was shot and killed by one of the Aqua agents.
Leif was the one leading the mission...and the staff member killed was
my father."

The others looked at her with shock.

Wanda turned away, shaking her head in disbelief. "An agent of Team
Aqua...? No, it can't be."

"Leif was there, Wanda. He saw the whole thing." Alex's eyes grew
downcast as she remembered what she knew of the event. "My Dad was
working late, and walked in on them just as they finished the
download. One of the junior agents attached to the mission got
startled and...well, bang." She rubbed her eyes for a second before
continuing. "Leif soon found out who the man was, found out he was a
father, and he's felt guilty about the whole thing ever since."

While glad to no longer have the confusion of her species' origins
to worry about, the little Gible understood enough of what had been
said to feel sad for Alex. She inched forward and rubbed herself
against the tall girl's leg, prompting a small smile and scratch on
the nose.

"Wow...that's heavy." Jason ran a hand through her hair, unsure what
to say. "Sorry about that."

The small smile turned into an encouraging smirk. "Don't feel bad
about me. I've had time to heal from that one, I'm perfectly alright."
The tall young woman looked upon the shorter one. "Leif, Sven and
Peabody have all been good people towards me, but I have no reason to
think of Team Aqua as a good or bad organization. I don't hate it or
love it...I just accept it." Turning her attention back to the Gible,
she added, "And I don't think we need to worry about how your species
developed either. What matters is you developed, and while that kind
of thing would be fun to know, it isn't necessary. You're here. That's
what matters."

That was one statement the little Land Shark couldn't find
saddening or confusing. "Gib!"

Alex laughed, then got to her feet. "Well, I don't know about
anyone else, but I'm done expressing my angst and there's a city in
walking distance. If we pack up and get moving now, we can hit Fortree
by noon. So, what say we round up the Pokémon and get going?"

TBC!

[NS: Sorry this took so long...breaks tend to kill my drive towards
accomplishment.]
