"Route 202 - Welcome to Trainer Territory"
Steffan Alun & Chet Weaver
It was a fresh new day, and Karl was ready to move on. Keiko, keen to find
somewhere with a bit more to do than Sandgem Town, followed in his
footsteps.
"I don't feel comfortable leading," said Karl awkwardly, one of the world's
natural followers.
"You know the way better than I do!" insisted Keiko. "Come on, let's
hurry - I wonder if there's a contest house in the next town."
"I don't know this place at all ..." started Karl, but it was no good.
"Alright, alright, but let me know if you see a Shinx."
"What's a Shinx?" asked Keiko.
"Looks like a blue cat, apparently," said Karl. "According to the nurse,
they're meant to be fairly common in this area."
"Oh, talking to the nurse behind my back, were you?" asked Keiko jokingly.
"No!" squealed Karl, Keiko's sense of humour going right over his head. "I
mean, you said I could have personal space ... and ... and ..."
"Relax! giggled Keiko. "I'm joking."
They marched through the long grass of Route 202. There were fences ahead,
but they were too high to climb from this side. They'd have to brave long
grass all the way.
Karl kept one hand on Pride's PokéBall, prepared to fight if a wild Pokémon
turned up. Suddenly, however, he spotted something far worse than a wild
Pokémon.
"Oh, no," he moaned.
"What's wrong?" asked Keiko.
"Up ahead," said Karl. "A bunch of yongsters. I think I bumped into them
the other day ..."
"You think you did?" asked Keiko.
"They all look alike," said Karl. "Suppose we'd better try to avoid them."
But it was too late. Already, one of the youngsters was marching up to
them.
"If you make eye contact with a trainer, you've got to fight!" he said.
"Why?" asked Karl, alarmed. "Why can't we just go on our way?"
"You made eye contact," said the youngster. "You're asking for it!"
"Hang on," said Keiko. "We were looking to your right. We didn't make eye
contact!"
"You have now!" insisted the youngster. "I'm going to beat you with the
Pokémon I just caught."
"But ..." started Karl, but then he stopped. If the youngster had just
caught this Pokémon, how bad could it be? "What happens if we win?"
The youngster laughed.
"Alright," said Karl. "What happens if YOU win?"
"When I win, I get some of your money," said the youngster.
"So we get some of yours if WE win," said Keiko. "Yeah, I know how it
works."
Karl nudged Keiko, and they turned their backs to the youngster.
"I'm not sure I like the idea of stealing money from a little kid," said
Karl.
"He'll earn it back soon enough," said Keiko. "Pokémon training pays well."
"You're sure?"
"Certain."
"Alright, then," said Karl. He took a deep breath.
"So," said Keiko. "Will you fight him, or shall I?"
Karl's expression of horror made his feelings on the matter quite clear.

"Right then," Keiko said. "You can have the next one. Skyler, you
ready?"
"Swablu!" confirmed her cotton-puff hat as he hopped off her head and
onto the ground. He freaked out as soon as his feet touched the dirt
and he hopped into the air. He hovered in the air, flapping his
cottony wings madly as he tried to wipe the dirt from his feet.
"Ha, this should be easy!" the youngster declared. "Go, Shinx!"
The youngster tossed out a PokeBall. In a flash of light, a blue and
black cat appeared before Skyler. It set eyes on the Swablu and
raised its hackles.
"Shiiinnnnx!" the cat growled.
"It's so cute!" Keiko cheered. "Especially the little bindings on its
feet! Hey, mind if my friend scans your Pokemon?"
"Huh?" the youngster replied, caught off guard. "Sure, I guess."
Keiko gestured to Karl, who took out his PokeDex. He let the entry
play as he made notes.
"Shinx, the Flash Pokemon," the PokeDex droned. "Its forelegs have a
muscle-based system of generating electricity. Its body shines if
endangered. All of its fur dazzles if danger is sensed. It flees
while the foe is momentarily blinded."
"Did you get it?" Keiko asked.
"Uh, yeah," Karl replied. "But I think we still need to find a
female."
"Okay, I'll make this quick," Keiko turned back to the battle.
"Skyler, use Aerial Ace!"
"Swablu!" Skyler chirped as he soared into the air. He soon came back
down in a near suicidal dive.
"You shoulda switched out while you had the chance!" the youngster
taunted. "Shinx, use Spark!"
"Shinx!" Shinx noted as it began to charge its fur with electricity.
As soon as Skyler swerved towards it, flying parallel to the ground,
the Shinx charged towards him at full speed.
"And Electric attack?" Keiko remarked. Then she realized how dumb
that probably sounded after hearing the PokeDex's report. She knew
she had to come up with a way to keep Skyler from being hit by it, but
any change in velocity at this point could turn up badly. She was
going to have to try a combination. "Skyler, use Secret Power!"
Skyler's eyes soon glowed white. Without warning, a cloud of
yellowish dust burst out from the grass around the Shinx. The Shinx
sneezed and came to a stop as the Stun Spores tickled its nose. Less
than a second later, Skyler rushed in and veered upwards, knocking the
Shinx off its feet. The Shinx struggled to stand, but gave up and
collapsed.
"Guess I don't know my own strength," Keiko chuckled nervously. "Uh,
you wanna go again?"
The youngster recalled his Shinx. He looked at his PokeBall, then
back at Keiko. "Nah, I'm good." He started inching away. "Uh... See
ya!"
"Hey, wait!" Keiko exclaimed. "We had a bet!"
"We did?" the youngster remarked. "Oh, oh, yeah." He reached into
his pocket for some P-Bills and handed them to Keiko quickly.
"There. I... uh... gotta go now. Bye!"
"When we find a female Shinx, I'm going to catch it," Keiko said to
Karl. "I love those things already!"
"You just took that one down in one hit!" Karl balked. "With a Flying-
type!"
"I know, I expected it to be a lot stronger, too," Keiko replied as
Skyler resumed his perch on her head. "I didn't realize how much
stronger my Pokemon got adventuring in Hoenn. Maybe I should've tried
the gym thing again." She pondered this for a second, then shrugged
and began tromping through the grass. "Hey, let's find that lady-
Shinx! One's gotta be around here somewhere, right?"

And so the search began! Karl kept his eyes open for wild Pokémon,
occasionally dispatching Cognizant or Pride to take care of the wild Starly
and Bidoof that turned up from time to time, while Keiko assumed youngster
watch. Meanwhile, Nomak - Karl's Farfetch'd - had taken a great interest in
Skyler. He kept trying to hit Skyler's cloudy wings with his leek. Skyler
cast a gentle Mist behind him as he flew, keeping Nomak at bay.
Even when Keiko eventuall found a Shinx, they were out of luck - it was
another male. Keiko agreed to stick to her decision to capture a female, to
give them an added incentive to search for one.
Once they were out of the way of most of the youngsters, they began to make
conversation.
"I don't really catch that many Pokémon," said Keiko. "I really love the
ones I have. Then sometimes, I just fancy catching a new one."
"I'm the same," said Karl. "I've had the same three now for six years. And
then, a couple of weeks ago, I caught Pride and Cognizant." He paused.
"Oh, and there was this one time when I caught a Su-"
"What's that?" asked Keiko suddenly. She lowered her voice to a whisper.
"Did you hear that rustling?"
Karl looked towards the direction in which she was pointing. A yellow,
star-shaped tip of a tail was showing through the grass.
"Female," said Karl confidently. He directed his Starly towards the Shinx.
"Go on, Cognizant."
Seeing Cognizant, the she-Shinx immediately raised her hackles.
"She's becoming aggressive," said Keiko thoughtfully.
"According to this," said Karl, navigating the menus of his Pokédex, "Shinx
tends to become more aggressive towards Pokémon of the same gender."
"Might be better to call your Starly back, then," said Keiko.
"Agreed," said Karl. "Come back, Cognizant." He sent in his Bidoof
instead. "Go on, Pride."
"Don't hurt her, remember," said Keiko.
"Alright. Pride - behave. Growl at her, and nothing more."
Despite lacking the Shinx's natural Rivalry, Pride was deeply unhappy about
not being allowed to show off his strength. He growled dangerously, and the
Shinx seemed far less eager to fight than she had been.
"The fringe!" said Karl, despite the comment's apparent lack of relevance to
anything at all.
"What?" said Keiko.
"This one has a shorter fringe." Karl nearly punched the air. This was the
first Pokémon he'd seen since leaving Route 201 where the two genders had
significant physical differences.
"So, you're done?" asked Keiko.
"Done and dusted," clarified Karl.
"Great!" said Keiko. "Then I'm going to catch it!"

I already discussed this with you over IM, but, just so everyone's
clear, you may write a character post for her. It's less work for me,
and I just want to make sure the game goes on so I'm cool with
whatever happens.

If you're not 100% happy with it, I won't post it anyway, but like I say -
I'm sure there are layers to Keiko, so it's about time they were stripped

Hours later, with the sun close to setting, Karl was sure they must be
nearing the end. He was quite exhausted. Pride, Cognizant and Iceduck had
lost the energy to attack a while ago, and Keiko had had to take over
dealing with wild Pokémon. He felt quite guilty about shifting the
responsibility onto her, particularly since he'd intended to take on the
journey by himself, but Keiko calmly dealt with everything they came
across - handling them quite comfortably with her stronger Pokémon. Karl
gave her a Potion to heal Jocasta, keiko freshly-caught Shinx, so even she
managed to train up a bit.
Karl's heart sank as the rounded another corner. An enormous group of
youngsters had gathered on this part of the route, and were standing,
motionless - daring anyone to cross their paths.
"Can't go on ..." he said softly. "I think we'll have to rest. I'm not
ready to battle that lot."
"I can ..." started Keiko, but Karl shook his head.
"You've done more than enough," he said. "I need to start taking
responsibility." The thought hit him with such force; he really hadn't been
taking things at all seriously. He'd thought it'd be easy, being a trainer.
Getting badges, travelling around the world ... He'd never imagined
struggling to raise Pokémon in an area where the wild ones were nearly as
strong as them, or that there'd be so many other trainers keen to battle.
"Besides, it'll soon be too dark to battle," he said. "Do any of your
Pokémon know Flash?"
"No," admitted Keiko.
"Then we camp. Here." He exhaled, the weight of the decision finally gone.
He removed a small, collapsible tent from his bag. He started to set it up,
and Keiko gave him a hand.
"I've got my own sleeping bag," she said.
"Great," said Karl. "The tent's not that roomy inside, but it gets the job
done." He fought the panicked feeling of sharing a small tent with a
strange girl.
Eventually, the tent had been set up, and they were now sat inside, eating a
basic meal made with nearby berries.
"I should have remembered the Repels," said Karl. "I bought a few back in
Sandgem. If I'd used some, my Pokémon might have had enough energy to beat
the youngsters."
"The training was more valuable," insisted Keiko. "Raising new Pokémon's
always like this at first - a struggle to strengthen them enough to take
care of themselves. But that's an important first step, and one you'll
eventually grow to love." She glanced over at Jocasta's PokéBall, smiling
proudly.
"We'd better get to sleep as soon as possible," said Karl. "We need to be
ready to leave immediately tomorrow. If we're lucky, the youngsters might
not have woken up yet."
"Okay," said Keiko, sensing that decision-making was probably a new concept
to Karl, judging by the amount of seemingly unnecessary planning he was keen
to do. She yawned. "It's been a busy few days. It'll be nice to sleep in
the great outdoors again." She took off her vest, packing it carefully into
the bag.
It took Karl a few moments to notice what she was doing. Then, his mind
screaming like an Exploud, he turned calmly to face the other side of the
tent. He gave her what he estimated was enough time to put on her pyjamas,
and turned back.
The screaming was suddenly silenced.
Karl stared.
Keiko started to unpack her sleeping bag.
Karl looked away.
Keiko closed her bag, and placed it at the edge of the tent.
Karl looked back.
Keiko placed the sleeping bag on-
"You're naked!"
Keiko jumped.
"I mean, you're ... you're ... you aren't wearing any clothes. Naked.
What."
Keiko looked terrified.
"I'm going to bed ..." she whimpered, by way of explanation.
"But ... but ..." Karl closed his eyes. He opened them again, assuming
he'd imagined the whole thing. "But ... I'm here! And you're naked! In
front of me!"
"Oh, come on," said Keiko. "It's nothing you haven't seen before."
Karl hurriedly turned away.
"Again," said Keiko softly. "I'm such an idiot."
And now Karl turned back.
"Just ... every time, there's like a new rule. Can't be naked in towns and
cities - that's fine! I can live with that! Don't be naked when you're
walking around where there are other people. Great! I get it! I don't
WANT to make people uncomfortable. But I mean ... sleeping? Surely I can
sleep naked?"
"But in front-"
"Yes, I know," said Keiko, biting her lower lip. "Obviously, I've made
another mistake. Clearly, there's just one big rule that says 'you can
never be naked'. I don't mind wearing clothes, you know? But now I can't
even be naked around my friends? What next? I can't be naked even in front
of myself?"
"Friends ..." said Karl in an undertone. He shook his head, as though to
dislodge the thought for the moment. "You're a naturist," he said gently.
"Yes," said Keiko, almost bitterly. "Maybe I should have kept to my own."
"No, no," said Karl. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I know what it's like, not
understanding the rules of social boundaries and stuff. I didn't have many
friends when I was younger." He smiled encouragingly. "Getting it wrong
scares me too."
Keiko smiled back.
She reached for her bag. "There's bound to be something in here I can
wear," she said.
"Don't worry about it," said Karl. "You need to rest. You need a good
night's sleep. Just ... sleep as you normally do."
Keiko looked so pleased that Karl was terrified she might hug him. Instead,
she breathed a thankyou, and settled down for the night.
Karl drifted off to sleep, shivering now as he thought about what had just
happened.

It slowly dawned on Karl that he'd already witnessed a song that sent
listeners to sleep - Skyler's. The number of Kricketots in front of him was
nearly overwhelming, but he had to keep them away from the sleeping Keiko.
"Nomak, Iceduck - take care of them!" he shouted, sending his Farfetch'd and
Psyduck into the fray. Despite the level difference, the fight wasn't as
easy as Karl had hoped, with so many opponents to take down.
"Alright, Cognizant, Pride," he said. "Give them a hand."
And so the epic struggle continued. Karl instructed Pride to Tackle
anything that crossed its path, and the Bidoof was more than happy to
oblige. Meanwhile, he told Cognizant to fly above the Kricketot swarm,
using Quick Attack on any that seemed about to attack.
After knocking out a few of the Kricketot, Karl remembered his Pokédex.
This was hardly an ideal chance for close examination, but he could see that
there were plenty of both genders present.
More and more Kricketot were fainting all around him and Keiko, and
fortunately, with so many, he was able to identify the physical difference
rapidly - the females had a wider rim of fur around their necks.
He realised he'd need to start moving to get past the Pokémon. He crossed
back towards Keiko.
"Wake up!" he called. He was tempted to try slapping her, as he'd seen done
on television, but he was also sure he wouldn't personally want to be
slapped. But then, what alternative was there? She'd probably be light
enough to carry, but she was still naked - his mind couldn't quite fathom
the idea of touching a naked girl. He didn't like the idea of going through
her belongings to find clothing either.
Then he had an idea. He reached for Keiko's Pokéballs, two of which still
contained Pokémon. He released Vamoyra, her Machop.
"Vampyra, your trainer needs you," he said. "Think you can carry her
without getting mixed up with the Kricketot?" He glanced over to ensure
that his Pokémon were still alright - it seemed that Nomak was doing his
best to protect the youngest members of the team.
Vampyra nodded in agreement, and picked up Keiko.
"Here," said Karl, handing her a red and white picnic cloth. "Wrap her in
that, in case anyone sees. Skyler?" The Swablu flew over in response.
"Think you can lead us through the battlefield?"
Skyler, seeing that Keiko needed help, immediately took to the suggestion.
He dashed towards Cognizant, chirruping at her along the way, and guided
Karl and Vampyra towards the nearest town.
As he walked, Karl stopped as he saw Pride doing something unusual - he was
rolling into a ball whenever a Kricketot attempted to hit him.
"You've learned Defense Curl!" exclaimed Karl. "That's great, Pride!"
And Pride wasn't the only one who'd learned a new trick. Up ahead,
Cognizant was now dispatching the Kricketot easily with her newly-learned
Wing Attack.
Encouraged by his Pokémon's determination, Karl marched onwards, with
Vampyra in tow.
By the time Keiko awoke, the gang had arrived at the Pokémon Centre in
Jubilife City.

She's not naked. She got dressed while Karl scanned the first
Kricketot.

Okay. I'll do it when I get a chance. Feel free to do it yourself if
you think I'm taking too long.
