>"It's okay, just...try to keep a reign on your impulses. We don't want
>to attract any unwanted attention."
Somewhere, in the fabric of the universe, a thread tore free, packed its
bags, and ambled away from its allotted place, shouting something
demented about "plot devices" and "idiotically premonitory rhetoric." He
shortly lit himself on fire. His family sorely missed him.
At that very moment, in our pokéverse, a hand landed on our
aforementioned couple's shoulders. With a shout, Amber spun around--or
she would have if she hadn't at that point disappeared with a satisfying
"pop!". It was the call of the plot twist: no villain could resist.
Alexandra tore a pokeball from her belt looking around. "What just
happened? Where did Amber and Jason go?"
Elsa, still hackled about the sand shark she'd seen, hurled a rock where
they had been. "Who cares! I bet they ninja'd out of here, leaving us
stranded, which is just as well! Thieves and murderers are...are...are
STUPID!" she finished lamely. Technically she was too wound up to care
about what had actually happened to them, but the very creepy fact that
they had disappeared into thin air creeped her right the heck out.
ShadowWarrior descended on the area, his brow furrowing. "It looks
like...like...i don't know what. But," he bent his head and picked
something up, alighting on Alex's shoulder and depositing it in her
hand, "does this look familiar?"
She examined it. "A murkrow feather?"
"A very big one," he nodded. "That is...odd."
"Oh like we need any more oddities," Elsa snapped.
Warrior tossed a very cool gaze in her direction before spreading his
wings and investigating the disappearance more thoroughly.
--
Elsewhere, in the nothing world, Amber screamed.
Jason screamed.
And Dharak screamed, just for fun.
Of course, no sound came out. The nothing world was nothing, no air, no
sound, no feeling; just black. Jason and Amber screamed because of the
swiftly fading sensations that being transferred to that world induces:
brief but unimaginable, wracking pain.
....
Jason looked around in a panic.
Where am I? he thought frantically. What's going on? That HURT! Where's
Amber? My pokéballs are gone!
And with a sneaking feeling of horror, he realized: his pokéballs
weren't the only kind to be missing.
....
Amber had never felt angrier. She just knew that if she could feel
something, she would be hackling. Dharak, that sneaky, slimy bastard!
What was he doing this time? Finding some other cunning plot to rip
Amber from the fabric of her life, no doubt.
"You could really use some originality," she tried to shout, but it was
like being drowned in air: no way, no how could she make a sound. How
she could breathe, she would never know.
She reached for her belt and fumbled. Didn't she have a belt there? Come
to think of it, her clothes looked unnaturally tight.
....Oh.
She began a long tirade of fierce and very family unfriendly curses.
--
SQUAWK!
"--CKING HELL WHAT THE FUCK SHIT BASTARD!!!" Amber finished, her fists
clenched. Jason had landed at the same time, across her lap. Beneath
them both, ShadowWarrior was not happy.
Alex stared. Elsa gawked. ShadowWarrior prayed for unbroken bones.
Jason was no longer a five-foot-ten-inch-tall rockstar, with bleached
spikes and devilish good looks. He no longer had his masculine physique,
or his debonair glance that could charm a sow away from her slop (as
if). No, instead he sported a lanky, curvy figure; shoulder-length black
hair with the last two inches or so bleached out; big blue eyes; and
hips that could kill a man with a single sway. He...was now a she.
And Amber was suitably pissed. Her own curves had disappeared, to be
replaced with a remarkably handsome male body. Her hair had shrunk up to
the nape of her neck, feathering out as most asian hair does. Her eyes
had gained more of a slant; apparently being male brought out her
father's japanese characteristics in her. Testosterone surged. Her shirt
did too: it rode up to her midriff, and her girly cargo pants clung
uncomfortably to her hips and...other newly discovered areas.
"...Whoa," Jason said, his voice considerably higher than he was used to.
"What the BLOODY DAMN HELL is the matter with you?" Amber snapped in a
baritone.
"What?" Dharak pouted, sounding offended. "Didn't you want a disguise?"
She stammered, speechless. He smirked, disappearing in a flash of
(swiftly-vanishing) feathers.
"Oh...oh, goddish. This is so cliché," she growled. "Things could not
get any--"
Jason clapped a hand over her mouth, to cut off her sentence, pleading
inwardly that the universe had not heard that comment begging for a new
plot twist.
"Please," Warrior coughed. "PLEASE, get off of me!"

I think this is what happened; Alex was attempting to get Jason and
Amber's attention, though they were distracted by their recent gender-
swap. Finally, a totally unknown newcomer interrupted Amber, who
snapped at him.
That's my take on it anyway, though I could be wrong. >> Stay informed about: [PW] Serious Issues Are Serious (Was "Onward...") |

Yeah, pretty much. And, to (hopefully) prevent confusion, Jason and
Amber keep their original pronouns.

I don't think that helped. It probably would've been better if you switched
the pronouns, too. I can't speak for everyone else, but it's something I'd
expect. Also, I think it added to my confusion when Amber snapped at the
new guy since I wasn't certain who "the man" you were referencing was. I
think maybe if there was some description of "the man" when he appeared, his
existence would be a little more apparent.

Her mind officially boggled, and fearing further hallucinations,
Elsa inched close to the surprised Alex. "Please tell me you're seeing
what I'm seeing."
"That Amber and Jason have apparently been gender-swapped by a
strange Murkrow-like entity? Yeah, I saw that too."
"And you weren't hallucinating about that shark fin either."
ShadowWarrior, who had jumped into his trainer's arms for protection,
now turned his beak on Elsa. "That was real."
"Sh-shark fin?" came a trembling voice from the Murkrow's trainer.
She shook her head, casting aside her phobia, then turned her
attention back to the newly Ranma-ized couple. "Amber! Jason!"
Unfortunately for Alex, the two were still more than a bit enamored
with their new physiologies, Amber beginning to flex his newly
masculine and toned arms and Jason poking at her new breasts.
Alex, being an oddity in her own right, tended to be patient about
such matters. Right now, however, her patience had ran low...and the
enigmatic Murkrow man was making her more than a little uncomfortable.
And she needed answers before he decided to come back.
ShadowWarrior hopped from her arms to her left shoulder as she
slipped off her right gauntlet. She brought her hand to her mouth,
forefinger and pinky extended and entering her lips, and whistled
loudly.
That caught their attention.
"If we're done toying with ourselves..." Alex leveled her gaze upon
Jason, whose fingers were bordering dangerously close to newly-
prominent parts of the former man's newly-prominent chest. "I think me
and Wanda need some answers. Who was that Murkrow guy? Why'd he gender-
flip you?"
"And is he gonna be back?" Elsa interrupted.
Alex gave the slightest of nods in agreement with the shorter
girl's question, not feeling too comfortable that she hadn't even been
able to pick up on the powerful hybrid before he appeared. She turned
back to the two as she slipped her gauntlet back on, prompting them
with a hardened look.
Amber ran a hand through his hair, experimentally touching his
ears. "Dharak. His name's Dharak. He's been chasing after me since I
started my journey. He's how I ended up part-Sneasel, long story."
"Basically he wants to kill her." Jason gained a quizzical
expression on her face. "Or something like that."
ShadowWarrior shook his head and cawed softly. "Another nigh-omni
psycho."
"<Apparently we attract them like honey attracts Combee.>" Surtur's
emerald eyes darted over the area, fully expecting their friend to
return. "<What do we do now?>"
"For starters, we need to hoof it and get to Fortree. Assuming that
guy comes back and decides to finish whatever twisted game he's
started, we'll probably need help. I could fight him, but I doubt I'd
make much impact. Bob might not help much, but Kitsu and Keaton can
definitely lay the smackdown on him." With a quick glance to the duo's
now alternately tighter and looser clothing, Alex added, "And even if
he doesn't, you two need new clothes." Her hands swept across her belt
for a second. "Now, spot check. If anything's missing, I want to know
about it."
TBC!
[NS: Yes, Alex is still uneasy around all shark-like critters, and no,

Amber fumbled at his belt and found an assortment of pokeballs. Jason
did the same. When they released them, however, they found that their
belts had been scrambled.
Amber released Velocity, Miami, Ella, Wolfgang, and one very surprised
Sandshrew. Jason, then, released Fang, Pocco, Rivet, DJ, Cyan, and Gigawatt.
"Hey," Jason squeaked. "What happened there?"
"I dunno," Amber muttered, sorting out the pokeballs. "Here take these,
they're yours."
But some magnetism kept them in his hands, and he bit his lip. "Um."
Jason planted her hands on her hips. "Ugh! So you mean, we're stuck with
them."
"Yep."
<Amb--Jas--w---what in the--!> Dj blinked.
"Dharak showed up," Amber prompted, then returned all his pokemon,
except the sandshrew, who crawled into his arms to find familiar scent
in the not-so-familiar surroundings.
"Just one stupid surprise after another," Elsa grumbled, still wary for
sharks.
"Come on, come on, let's get going!" Alex was nervous now, with shark
threats and weird Murkrow-man threats. The others fell in step and they
headed towards their destination.
"Wait did you say Bob would be there? Or Kitsu? And Keaton?" Amber asked
hopefully.

"That's what I'm hoping. People have a bad habit of disappearing on
me lately." An idea suddenly occurred to her, and Alex pulled out her
cell phone. "Here's hoping I've got a clear signal."
-
A single phone rang at the Fortree Pokémon Center, immediately
catching the attention of the on-duty nurse.
"Chansey chansey chansey-chan chansey!"
Unfortunately, the on-duty nurse was not human.
"Chan sey chan sey chan?"
With a nod of her nonexistent head, the Chansey quickly picked up a
pen and paper and started writing out a note. "Chan sey chan chan sey,
sey chan-sey sey Chansey chan Sey-chan chan chansey sey chan. Sey chan
chan. Sey chan. Chancey." She set her pen aside. "Chan sey!"
-
"My Chansey's a little rusty, but she should deliver the message
easy enough."
"Now that's done, who are Kitsu and Keaton?" Elsa's right eyebrow
rose as she looked at Amber suspiciously. "More thieves?"
"Samurai actually," Alex explained. "I've been traveling with them
ever since the Silver Conference. They've mentioned you guys a couple
times actually."
Jason and Amber exchanged relieved smiles, glad to be remembered.
Elsa, meanwhile, began to grow concerned. "And this Bob...he doesn't
happen to have a leaf growing out of his head, does he?"
"Yep, that's him. Why, have you met?"
Elsa swiftly recalled the last time she crossed paths with the
young breeder, back when she'd been temporarily staying with Team
Aqua. It seemed like ages ago. He seemed stable enough then...
"Yes."
"Well, hopefully they'll be there when we arrive, and we can all
get reacquainted."
Alex swiftly reminded herself of what she'd discovered during her
brief sojourn into the Magma outpost with Elsa and Schwester, and
hoped that particular trail hadn't grown cold.

It would be serveral hours before a worn and weary Kitsu and Keaton arrived
at the Fortree Pokemon Center. Kitsu remained elegant despite her
exhaustion, practically gliding with her bisento resting on her shoulder and
only a few cuts and stains on her samurai robes and flowing nine tails.
Keaton, her bulkier, minoTauros brother, looked like he had been dropped
into the middle of a soccer riot and managed to fight his way to freedom but
not before running afoul of someone with a flamethrower. They didn't bother
with the front desk as they tromped through the lobby, as they already had a
room since they had been in town for so long.
"I don't get it," Keaton said. "I went through the exact same training
regimin, all day might I add, as you, and you're walking around like you
just got out of a carriage."
"It's called poise, dear brother," Kitsu sighed. "Even after a hard day's
work, one must look like a princess, after all. You should try it
sometime."
"Nah, I look terrible in a dress," Keaton quipped. "You know, you kinda
sounded like your mother for a moment there."
"Oh, dear god, I hope not," Kitsu remarked with a hint of revulsion. "If
she had her way, I wouldn't even leave my room until I was married. She
wants me to be like all our other sisters, shiftless gadabouts who have
nothing better but to spread gossip all day. Not that I dislike all the
princess stuff, but I have interests beyond who cheated on which spouse with
what unskilled laborer and their friends, tools, or livestock."
"I've clearly been going to the wrong parties," Keaton noted.
About then, a Chansey nurse waddled up to them and handed Kitsu a note.
"What's this?" Kitsu noted, taking the note and examining it closely.
"What is it?" Keaton inquired, looking over her shoulder.
"I don't know," Kitsu replied, turning the note over in her hands. "I think
it's a landscape or something."
"Are you sure about that?" Keaton remarked, taking the note.
"Of course it is," Kitsu explained. "See, these wavy bits are obviously a
body of water, and this right here is some kind of building. A light house,
maybe." She turned to the Chansey and bowed graciously. "It's very
lovely."
"Uh, I don't think this is a picture," Keaton said as the Chansey began to
fume. "I think it's a message."
"Really?" Kitsu remarked. "And I thought *my* doctor's handwriting was hard
to read." She quickly turned back to the Chansey and bowed apologetically.
"I'm so very sorry. I didn't mean to offend you. I never learned to read
the local language, that's all."
The Chansey huffed at her and waddled off.
"You can read just fine," Keaton pointed out.
"Yeah, but she doesn't know that," Kitsu said. "Any idea what it says?"
"Well, my Chansey's a little rusty..." Keaton answered, "But I'm pretty sure
it's gibberish."
Kitsu sighed. "I suppose it's a bit much to expect something that doesn't
speak the language to be able to write in it."
"But wouldn't the entire page be the word 'Chansey' written over and over
again?" Keaton speculated.
"It probably would be if she knew what to write," Kitsu hypothesized. "I
just wish I knew who it was from."
"Well, let's see," Keaton said. He put the paper to his nose and took a
big, dramatic whiff. "I think it's from Alex and..." Sniff sniff
"...Amber's with her, I think. Jason's probably there, too. And another
girl I don't recognize..." He passed the note back to Kitsu. "They're
probably going to be in town soon."
"You can tell that Alex left the message?" Kitsu noted.
"Yep," Keaton confirmed.
"And who's with her?" Kitsu continued.
"Just the girls," Keaton corrected. "If Amber's there, it's safe to say
Jason's there, too, though."
"... By smelling the note a Chansey handed to you, that she probably took
over the phone?" Kitsu concluded.
"What can I say? It's a gift," Keaton remarked with a shrug.
Kitsu paused for a moment, giving her brother an incredulous look, before
saying, "You're just guessing, aren't you?"
"The nose doesn't lie," Keaton said, continuing on to their room. "Every
woman influences the women they meet, even over the phone. That influence
leaves behind a particular scent. Just a hint, though. Very hard to find
if you don't know what you're looking for. It's all very meta."
"You're making all this up, aren't you?" Kitsu asked.
"You'll see," Keaton said confidently. "But let's get some shut-eye, huh?
It's been a long day."
