Lauren and Diego had never seen such a swanky area for trainers.
Everything was in pristine condition. Nobody was battling – such
events were taken to individual bedrooms, or occasionally the deck.
This area was for trading and socialising.
And, of course, bragging.
“You know, darling, you really must get a Pachirisu,” said one lady to
another as they passed – and they really were ladies, complete with
pearls and beauty spots. “They really are the in thing. I managed to
get one from my husband. He travels a lot, you know. Got me one in
Sinnoh.”
“Goodness me,” replied the other lady. “Still messing around with
Sinnoh Pokémon? Haven’t you heard that Johto’s the place for Pokémon
now. Love that retro vibe. I wouldn’t be seen dead without my
Teddiursa. He’s a unique colour, of course, and stat-trained to have
the highest attack possible ...”
There were also a few stalls set up, promising various treats –
sundries for trainers, performers, rare breeders, and all sorts
besides.
It was as Lauren and Diego, still disguises as two old ladies, walked
past one such stall that they heard a voice.
"The Wise and Incredibly Powerful Guru senses your approach," said a
low,
breathing voice.
Diego looked over in the direction of the voice. This wasn’t a stall
at all, but a tent.
“He sensed my approach?” said Diego.
“Basic psychology,” snapped Lauren. “If someone’s approaching, then
they’re within earshot, and will prove him right. If anyone within
earshot isn’t approaching, they won’t be able to see in the other
direction to confirm that nobody’s approaching. And if nobody’s
around, then nobody will hear him anyway. Stupid prediction. A
Mankey could guess it.”
But Diego had already gone into the tent. Refusing to have any part
of this, Lauren busied herself trying to spot the captain. After all,
they were here to find him to learn Cut.
She started to feel edgy. It wasn’t that she needed Diego around. It
was just better for all involved when he was. That was all. He was
too stupid to be allowed to wander on his own. Yes. And also, knew
too many of Team Rocket’s secret. Their boss was relying on them to
keep those secrets, well, secret.
Eventually, Diego returned from the tent.
“How was the guru, then?” asked Lauren impatiently.
“It was a Clamperl.”
