I know this is a really early question on the PS3...

Will it be able to play avi's on home recorded DVD-Rs?

I know the XB360 can, with the appropraite hack

I dont think this is a unreasonable feature - or a "pirate invite" as
many ouut of the box DVD players can now do this - i.e. DIVX, MP3, AVI
etc from DVD

This would be a selling factor for the PS3 - and surely it cannot have
much of a cost implication?

Cheers

Probably not, at least, not without some hacking.

Since the PS3 is supposed to be able to run Linux, you could do that and
then run a media player there.

It also wouldn't surprise me if someone cooked up something along the
lines of the Xbox's mediaplayer solution (I don't remember its name
offhand) for the PS3 since it too will come with a HDD.

This is actually a facinating side issue - if it does "come to pass"
that the world of hacked Linux progs for the PS3 will work - then the
possibilities diffinately expand...

There was a linux kit for the PS2 as well. It was aimmed at more of the
hobbyist/developer crowd as opposed to the average user. It also required
a computer monitor, as opposed to a normal TV.

If the PS3's linux kit is more widely distributed then I'm sure we'll
start seeing homebrew apps coming out for the PS3. Not sure what Sony's
response will be though... Microsoft, for instance, was greatly annoyed
when they learned people were using their XBoxes for things other than
playing Xbox games.
