IIRC, we (as media) received test/debug PS2 units in July of 2000. Granted,
the PS2 had already been released in Japan back in April, so we had to wait
three months after that launch, but it was still three months ahead of the
US launch. This time around, we (or rather, my former editors still in the
media) received PC-based dev kits several weeks ago. No one I know has
received an actual production/encased unit yet, with a little less than two
months to go before launch. Media shouldn't have as high a priority as
development, of course, but SCEA will still want magazines to review launch
titles won't they?
I'm sure they made the decision to change the specs re: HDMI some time
before the recent announcement, and changed their manufacturing process
accordingly, but it couldn't have been too long ago. Perhaps they started
making the higher-end model first? In any event, if the failure rate is
anything like the 360 (and with Blu Ray, the rate just might be higher), I'm
starting to wonder how rare the PS3s are going to be.
Train wreck indeed.
