PS3 Trophy System - Earn items for your Home space
March 29, 2008

The latest issue PSW magazine has confirmed two exciting things:

1 - GTA IV will be updated to include Home support

2 - the PS3 achievement system will give users more than just
points... earning in-game trophies will give users items to decorate
the Home space with and customize their avatar.

Sony has previously mentioned they wanted a 'deeper' system than a
simple 'score' but we've only just had confirmation of how far this
will integrate into Home itself.

Preview from PSM (US) April 2008 Issue
March 6th, 2008

With PlayStation Magazine's new preview of GTA IV comes a new
screenshot of Niko in the subway and these extra details.

* Entering an unlocked borough will instantly put the player on a
5-star wanted level and the fiction behind this is, Niko doesn't have
a naturalization papers and is considered as a terrorist threat.
* Pedestrians seemingly have thousands of lines of dialogue
* When asked about how the game begins, VP of development Jeronimo
Barrera says, "It sets up your position as an immigrant."
* The cast of characters is guesstimated at being in the hundreds
by Barrera.

* Barrera states "We want this game to last for years. I'm sure
we'll do another GTA some time in the future, but this one is built to
last." They also mention that the PS3 will most likely have their own
form of DLC as well.

* Any problems with the PS3 version have been addressed and fixed.
Sony tech. was there to help.
* The euphoria engine goes as far as Niko actually stepping up
onto a curb and onto a dead body (think Captain Morgan's pose).
* Shots can penetrate some walls.
* Knife: "one slash across the face was enough to drop a bad guy"
* Firetrucks are confirmed. In the preview they state that they
set a car on fire, called 911 for a firetruck, and when the firetruck
arrived they stole it and drove down the street shooting the water
cannon.

I like how blig mook doesn't even add any commentary as he knows this is
second place loser ribbon to the 360's downloadable EPISODES that add
more...GAMEPLAY.
Good luck with that cool trophy in your virtual apartment.

Once again Sony admits their console is useless right now, but might
be of some theoretical use 4, 6 or 8 months later... whenever Home
finally does come out...

As much as I know you want to throw the whole "downloadable episodes" in his
face, you might want to clarify that they aren't free to 360 owners. We
will have to PAY for additional features. Its funny how people glaze over
that in their exhuberance for pointing out the obvious. The 360 version
gets nothing for FREE.

More to the point, the game is so enourmous (100hrs of gameplay on
it's own), is anyone going to care about the DLC unless they are an
absolute completist?

Shivering Isles for Oblivion was a massive add on, over a gig, and
cost $30 to buy - but I very much doubt it sold anything near 1:1 with
the 360 version of Oblivion,.

I agree with Michael Pachter, the DLC for GTAIV wont drive console
sales, it'll drive XBL takeup with existing Xbox owners (which arent
100% connected to XBL).

It's logical to assume that there will be downloadable content other
than the new episodes. It's also logical to assume that said
downloadable content will be available to both console platforms.

It's possible that there will be smaller exclusive downloads down the
line for whichever version doesn't do as well in an attempt to boost
sales for that particular version.

Did anyone say that the episodes are free?

Of course, it would be great to get this extra content for free, but
I'd much rather have the option of playing these extra episodes in
August than not have the option.

Wouldn't this argument similarly apply to the Playstation 3 and the
Blu-Ray player? PS3 fanboys early on kept crowing about the Blu-Ray
player being one of the reasons why the PS3 was better than the 360...
but they paid an extra $200 for that Blu-Ray player.

I don't think being a completist will have anything to do with wanting
to get the content. The extra episodic content isn't something that
was taken away from the PS3 version - rather, it was something extra
created specifically for the 360 version.

It's basically a big expansion pack, much in the same vein as the
Shivering Isles add-on you mention below.

The chances of an expansion pack ever selling near 1:1 with the
original game are slim to none.

However, you have to account for the much greater popularity and
broader appeal of Grand Theft Auto IV. There are going to be a LOT
more people who want more GTA IV than people who want more Oblivion.

It's a possibility. We won't have to wait too much longer to find out.

I was referring more to the notion of "getting more" that certain
people keep harping on. Yes, we have the OPTION/OPPORTUNITY of having
more content on our 360's but it comes at a cost. Out of the package,
they are the same game.

I agree but I wouldn't necessarily "brag" about an option. That was
my only gripe.

Exactly. I didn't buy my PS3 until I felt comfortable with paying
$200 extra dollars. But I can't say I've regretted it.

And your point is exactly what, Jackass? The xflop 3-shitty download
content is not coming day and date of the release, with R* estimating
"late in the year". There is a very good chance that Home will be out
of beta well before then, so GTA4 Home integration will be there
before that download content is up for purchase. The latest Home beta
news is that games with Home integration allows avatars to explore
entire game levels and maps. Seriously, even a braying jackass like
you must have some clue how that will be useful for getting even more
out of GTA4.

I was referring more to the notion of "getting more" that certain
people keep harping on. Yes, we have the OPTION/OPPORTUNITY of having
more content on our 360's but it comes at a cost. Out of the package,
they are the same game.

==============================================================

They were saying on G4 that most people arent going to play through the
whole game, and likely wouldnt want to buy extra content. Especially once
they get sucked into the online play.

So i guess it's really just a wait and see now.

PS - do you have some sort of Anti quote potion on that post?? It always
happens to yours!!

The same thing happens to me when I reply to Jonah, Paul Heslop or RPH. I
don't know what it is. I have never finished a GTA and I don't plan on this
freaking 100+ hour one to being the first.

Hasn't that always been Sony's pitch? "Just you wait...it's going to be
AWESOME when X comes out!" And then X arrives, the trolls trumpet X, the
reviewers shrug and say "X is OK...but not great", and then we go back to
waiting for the next big X to arrive.

As Sony has planned it, the PS3 is currently incomplete as it lacks a
proper controller with rumble support, and online system. Right now, PS3
owners are making due with standins in the form of the rumble-less SixAxis
controller, and a slightly improved version of the PS2's online service.

Seems to me that later this year is when we should really consider the PS3
to be "released".

I really think Sony is way-over estimating how much of an impact HOME is
going to have - especially since you know there's going to be a 3-6 month
period of time when Sony hurries to fix any problems that arise from such
a big rollout. Every big software project has that period of growing
pains - even Live had a bunch of updates released for it when the 360
first launched.
