While the Playstation 3 boasts a lot of power and impressive specs,
mainstream America will not pay $600.00 for a home videogame system. If
you don't believe me, just ask Trip Hawkins or SNK.
Both the 3DO & SNK Neo-Geo systems were powerful home systems. Both
systems were also overpriced with a suggested retail price of $600.00.
And neither one of them set the world on fire or found mainstream
success.
The PS3 (like the 3DO & Neo Geo) will have early adopters who create
impressive initial sales numbers for Sony. However, those sales will
fall briskly as Sony is surpassed by both Microsoft and Nintendo.
Sony will finally know what it's like to be firmly in 3rd place.
Of course the PS3 will sell more units than either the 3DO or Neo Geo
did in their day. Sony has the advantage of name recognition and
die-hard loyal fans.
Consumers will ultimately decide the fate of the PS3. Why buy an all
powerful home system for $600.00 when you can purchase a game machine
from Nintendo or Microsoft for $200.00 - $400.00?
Most mainstream Americans just want to play games. They don't need an
all in one system which runs their lives.
The 3DO was supposed to change the world. It was supposed to be the
all-in-one set top box which would revolutionize home entertainment. It
was supposed to play movies (VCDs) and have all sorts of upgrades and
expansions. Does this sound familiar? It should. Sony's PS3 business
plan virtually mirrors the business plan set forth by Trip Hawkins for
the 3DO in the 1990's.
The SNK Neo-Geo was just an overpriced game machine. It was the rich
man's system. The $600.00 home system with $200.00 games. It offered a
true arcade experience at home. The AES never experienced mainstream
success because it was overpriced. At least SNK was honest and focused
on what they do best: Make Games. Unlike Sony & 3DO who tried to make a
set-top box which does it all.
I believe that Sony is going to fail this time. The PS3 will have
moderate success (Think Dreamcast) but will not surpass PS1 or PS2
hardware sales numbers. And I firmly believe that the PS3 will not be
the #1 next generation platform.
Before you accuse me of being a Microsoft or Nintendo fan-boy, let me
tell you that I currently own a PS2 and about 25 games. I also own tons
of PS1 games and purchased the PS1 on launch day. I was really looking
forward to the PS3 until they released the price and system details. I
don't need an all-in-one device. I just want to play great games.
I am now looking at the Nintendo Wii & X-Box 360 as possible purchases.
Nintendo is focusing on what they do best: Make great games (and
controllers). Nintendo doesn't have the money that Sony & Microsoft do
so they are working hard to re-invent the industry with new innovations.
If the DS games are any indication of the future of Wii, Where do I sign
up?
I could be wrong, but this is how I see the future of Next-Generation
gaming:
1.) Nintendo Wii
2.) X-Box 360
3.) PS3

I totally agree, I own a PS2, GC & NDS lite, after hearing the cost of the
new PS3 here in the UK will be anything upwards of £400 - which I think is
ridiculous - I'll not be buying one on release, I also understand there'll
be 2 versions, why. I also can't understand why Sony are still including a
DVD player, I thought the player on PS2 was terrible, every disc ended up
with the sound out of sync with the lip movements, I bought a PS2 new
because of the DVD player capabilities, they did release an update disc but
you had to buy the DVD remote, I felt that was a rip-off, why not send the
update out to consumers who bought the original PS2.
The cost of the new Wii will probably be under £200, I've registered
interest in that, but not PS3, I'll buy that when A: there's a game I wish
to buy for it or B: when the price drops dramatically.
Like you I just want to play great games, if there was a RE game, Alone in
the Dark game or Silent Hill game released with the PS3 then I might be
interested, the AitD game was to have been released with the PS3 but has
been put back to 2008 & no doubt the others mentioned are in development so
I can wait.
Virginia.

I have to admit I've never had any problem with the DVD player on my
PS2. One slight gripe is that it doesn't play re-writable DVDs too well
but then again not a lot of players from that time can. I also found
using the controller is also much easier than a huge clunky remote as
control

The only reason I picked up a GameCube (Originally) was for REmake and
RE0, but decided to hold on to it due to the sheer wealth of good
affordable games. Other than GTA, Manhunt and the RE series (Due to the
amount of games) I think I Super Mario Sunshine clocked up the most
hours for a console game (This damn obsessive compulsive disorder of
mine mutter mutter mutter).
I never had any interest whatsoever in the XBox or 360 which made the
good-looking games available for it and the new knock-down price
redundant. Actually, that's a lie. If the new Grand Theft Auto IV is
released on it before anything else, than I might CONSIDER buying one
(Chances are it'll be dual released on the PS3 anyway) and if it used
XBox Live for multiplayer than I'll hold on to it for a while. Other
than that....
Until the next-gen consoles are all out I'm simply going to hold on to
my money. There are still quite a few games I've yet to get stuck in
to, most of these are for the N64!
*Yes, you heard that right. I'd rather play ancient N64 games than get
involved in another console war*.
Cheers,
Rob

I think they did fix the problem with the DVD with the later versions, I
know several people I spoke to about it who also owned the PS2 from release
also said they had similar problems with the sound, perhaps it was only a
small number which were affected, I know I tried several DVDs & all had the
same problem, it was alright until about the middle of the film & then the
lip synch problem occurred.

There was one other thing I forgot to mention (Another gripe as a
matter of fact).
Playstation2s have real difficulty reading writable and re-writable
music CDs. Why this is, I don't know. It plays some of my collection,
but past the sixth-tenth track the cd tray starts to click
intermittently and then displays a disk read error.
The strange part is - I still have an original Playstation 1 which has
so far played every W/RW CD I've thrown at it. I did have my PS2
connected to the stereo via the RGB cable, and seeing as my good stereo
is too big to have upstairs I've resorted to using the PS1 to handle my
music.
A ten year old PS1 versus a two/three year old PS2? No contest!
 D
Cheers,
Rob

I don't think it's right to compare the 3DO & SNK Neo-Geo systems to
the PS3 simply for the fact that when those 2 systems came out they
weren't as well known as the Playstation. Combine that with the fact
that the 3DO system didn't have very many good games and the SNK system
only had arcade ports which as we all know have little to know replay
value. Plus at the time Nintendo and Sega were at the top of their
game, why would people want to get a relatively unknown system with
barely any well known games when they could get a Super NES or a Sega
for the same price as those two consoles. ANother thing I'd like to
add is I believe the 3DO came out at a time when People weren't ready
to buy a new console. >> Stay informed about: PS3 Is The New 3DO / Neo-Geo |

I just don't think the market was ready for a CD based system. Sales of
the MegaCD weren't great either, the media didn't seem to be
implemented to it's full potential.
The 3DO was wayyyyy ahead of it's time.
