PS2 controllers work on PS1?

Can somebody please give me "the last word" on using PS2 controllers on
a PS1?

I've asked around and been told everything from "they dont work at all"
to "some games don't function properly due to sensitivity."

The PS1's controllers were digital only, so in theory, the PS2 controllers
*SHOULD* be OK because they have a digital-only mode. It shouldn't hurt
either the controller or the console if you try it.
