Anybody think that the competition for PC golf games is lacking?
And why hasn't Microsoft done a Links in years on the PC? The last one
was 2003 or so, it didn't even have all 3D graphics.
The Tiger Woods series is good, it does alot right, but becomming even
more console-port with every iteration. Even more flashier interfarce, but
in some ways less friendly (the text is getting small, especially at higher
resolutions, and the interface is one of those low-contrast modern types,
meant to look cooler than actually be useful). And they really are not
pushing the PC's hardware all that much(no advanced lighting techniques for
instance, like HDR/bloom).
Some people don't think that PC gaming is in sad shape, but it used to be
that there were at least 2-3 major golf games for PC's. At one time golf
games were pretty much a universal killer app among casual gamers... now
look where we are at. >> Stay informed about: PC golf games... where are they? |

Well, I think most here on this board expect me to reply to this. And like
some high-roller with loaded dice who knows what numbers will turn up before
he dashes the dice against the wall, so too I think most can predict my
response.
The state of new golf games is pitiful. EA's Tiger Woods golf, despite new
versions year after year, is still as bad as it always was. Arcade and
flashy graphics at its best, is all I can say about it.
There has been nothing new from the PC Links' series since the release of
Links 2003. Still, that game is tops and no game even comes close. The
only thing new that has happened to Links is the addition of a patch (done
independently, for the most part) that improves the career mode and a mod,
which greatly improves ball physics and makes the game more difficult.
But I hear that since Take2 (I think that's who it is) has bought the rights
to Links, the company is committed to continuing the series. Let's hope so.
It is oddly strange that a game that is probably the most actively played
game in the world still has had no significant PC golf-game releases since
Links 2003.

In fairness... how is Tiger Woods "arcade"? It seems to me in terms of
the gameplay it gets alot right. The graphics, OTOH, are not exactly
flashy. They are not bad but they are nowhere near state-of-the-art for the
PC. It's pretty shameful that the XBox 360 version has better graphics than
the PC version. Frankly, there's no reason the PC version couldn't have
that level of graphics.
The main thing that is bad for PC gamers about Tiger Woods PGA Tour- there
is no competition. Other than that, it's a good game, it just has no
motivation to be better. Oh, and EA's strategy of turning out another game
year after year might work for football and baseball, but it is ridiculous
for golf.

I prefer Tiger Woods true swing more than Links swings. Other than that
Links does alot of stuff right, it just needs an update. >> Stay informed about: PC golf games... where are they? |

TW PGA 06 is a dog, just like 05 was.
I get 3-5 fps at best, so it's back to the shop and refund - again.
Dunno why: all other EAsports 06 games run fine on my system.

That's odd. You didn't indicate what type of system you have. I have a mid
to low-ended machine and TW 06 ran very well on my machine. It was very
smooth, smoother than Links 2003. But I'll take tolerably smooth to smooth
with arcade gameplay.

| I'm not knocking TruSwing and it's variants; I just think 3clk is often

Honestly, I'd take click over any kind of current incarnation of a real-time
swing any day. As you say, edging is too easy. And if it weren't for
Links' PowerStroke method (it is very hard to cheat using this method,
though easier than it would be for click), I'd still be a clicker. I've
been playing Links since, actually, Leaderboard (the very early prototype
for Links). I played click all the way up until the PS came out. I do
vividly remember the drug-like intensity I used to feel when I hit the
"snap".
But for TW, just as I try it every year every year I am disappointed. The
game has changed about as much as Links 2003 has changed (actually less, if
you consider Links' mod), and the last version of Links 2003 was four or
five years ago.

The last PGA that works fine is the 2004 edition.

I suppose straight edging is a problem. But then again I use a
horizontal swing in Tiger Woods PGA Tour.
I used to be a fan of the Jack Nicklaus series, but of course it is now
defunct (I believe the engine was sold to some Japanese PC game company). I
like the mouse swing that was developed in that game, as you could make
tradeoffs between accuracy and distance. >> Stay informed about: PC golf games... where are they? |

I pretty much agree here. JN's real-time swing was possibly the best during
its time. Everyone ranted and raved about the TrueSwing when Sierra first
brought it out with PGA Championship golf. I still say it is too easy and
to hit a perfect swing 90% of the time is not very difficult.
