I might venture into this if time permits.

The cost that you saved from the open license is not really that signficant.
You only need to buy one full pack with the cd installation+manual+box
casing etc and the rest is just a piece of e-paper which you can keep track
off Mickeysoft site.

Except that we as corporations are not able to buy the so called package

If you do lots of network/flowcharts etc Visio is definitely faster but I
have to admit that you can get it done using the Mickeysoft Office XPee. In
Visio if you need to move the flowchart of linked objects around just move
the object and the links will be automatically adjusted.

Graphic works, of course

Yes there are everywhere but there are also abundant of copyright laws that
we as corporates need to abide, or we'll get our ass sued by BSA.

For a 80 users Novell client+server license, we need to spend UNITED STATES
DOLLAR SIX THOUSAND FOUR HUNDRED AND EIGHTY SIX (actual amount based on
latest quote).

The Gimp or something - free?

Free software was made for poor people like you and me.

And yes - this is still a lot to "average" people. To the upper middle
class it is an annoying expense and nothing is expensive to the rich Wink

www.dell.com.my and click on customize on any notebook

Microsoft(R) Office Small Business Edition 2003 (OEM Version) [+RM 839.00] =
US 220.79
Microsoft(R) Office Professional Edition 2003 (OEM Version) [+RM 1126.00] =
US 296.32

If we happen to change motherboard, we will call Mickeysoft and have it
re-activated. As long as we have one license to support the PC, it still
counts as a license. Yes, we are aware of how the copyright law works but
screw Mickeysoft. :-p

Secondly, it is not everyday that we have the motherboard changed.

Oh yeah, how silly of me! We *must* pay for home user license! Wink

Actually it is quite easy to learn. After all, you kinda get bored ordering
people around and you pretty much have some free time to yourself. whenever
I am in trouble I consult my friend (who is a graphic designer) but most of
the time is through self learning from the vast resources and tutorials, off
the net. Most of the tutorials have a very detailed step by step, which is
very easy to learn.

Most of the time I uses Adobe CS to create graphics for the director
presentation materials

They should come up with a third world country cost for that. We still live

Oh, don't be such a hypocrite. IIRC you're also using Mickeysoft instead of
Linux.

Blitzed. Our power "blipped" a couple of times today. PC did not
survive the second occurrence.

Fortunately, my homeowner's policy covers "replacement cost" (less
deductible, of course). Given the age of the PC (Win98SE), anything I
replace it with will be incredibly fast by comparison.

(I don't know whether to blame the power company or to thank them.)

Fortunately, back up laptop had battery power to handle the situation.

You need an ups mister.

And your insurance company is stupid if minus the deductible of current
value of your computer is enough to buy a newer better computer.

Most probably the only parts that needs to be replaced is the Power Supply
Unit

Smart UPS, even

You mean you guys have insurance for a computer?! What do you have on your
computer that is worth protecting?

Not really. Most of the time the PSU goes but not the MOBO

Normal UPS do not regulate the power but rather only provide as backup

I suppose it depends on what kind of computer you're trying to protect.
Servers, mainframes & minis for example are worth protecting. However most
of the time the thing that is worth protecting is data.

No, that's is why you purchase the "replacement cost" option when
covering items that obsolete quickly...

Don't worry, they charge you for the convenience...

Indeed, $20 bucks for a used power supply with a much quieter fan...,
five minutes with a screwdriver (tool, not the drink <sigh>), and a bit
of manual dexterity... and, hey, presto!

I'm still responsible for the deductible, they would only pay for
depreciation (about another $200).

It was on a surge protector strip. I always put any
electrical/electronics of any value on a surge strip.
