Ok I'm trying to find out what is the best PC setup to use with a Mame
Cabinet. I have done searches and always seem to find info on what
people think are minimum requirements. I want to be able to play all
the Mame roms, Chds, other emmulators and also some PC games. Not
saying money is no object but I also don't want to limit myself. So
if someone could tell me what is the best CPU, Ram, HD and Video Card
I would greatly appreciate all input.

Thanks

If you want to be able to play ALL as you say above, you are going to need
to wait a few years (10?) before thats possible. Bottom line is spend the
most on CPU and RAM if MAME is your main concern. Spend as much as you can
agford based on the above requirements. Othere emulators and PC games may
use graphics cards but for all intenets MAME does not.

I'm running a 2GHz dell dual-core server with 2gb of ram. Everything
seems to run smoothly except Cruisn USA and those newest games. And I
am running .96 binary and romset, so chances are I am missing out on
some improvements. Can anyone tell me if its worth doing the upgrade
and what impact it has on the more current games? It looks like the
CHD files are gone from the latest mame32 binary. What did I
overlook?

I am running the Maximus Arcade frontend, the Daphinie set for laser
disc games, Mame32 .96, and for Dragons Lair/Space Ace/DL2 I bought
the 10 anniversary CD.
The graphics card is the ati all in wonder 9800 pro, since I want to
make the dual core server be the DVR server and mP3 server for the
house, since it sits idle 90% of the day.

Just so you know, MAME makes no use of multiple core or multiple CPUs.

As far as the CHDs, they've not been removed to the best of my
knowledge. Hell, Aaron Giles has just released a tool for making CHDs
for the LaserDisk games.

However, I have to say, if you are happy with your current setup, then
just stick with it. No real reason to ever upgrade if you are content
with what you have.
