Post subject: New to PBEM....
Archived from groups: rec>games>diplomacy (more info?)

Hi all,

I have played a couple of hand-adjucated games on a forum I frequent, and
then played one game FTF with some friends on the Gibsons board I bought at
Amazon.
Now, basically, I'm looking for a bigger challenge, cause I have a tendency
to win or at least draw most of the games I play.

So this Play by email looks good, but I do have a couple of questions. I'll
number them...

1) Does a newbie game mean new to the entire game? Or new to PBEM? Cause i
don't really fancy joining the first one, but i would like an opportunity to
test my skills at ordering the judge around. Maybe I could fill an abandoned
place somewhere? Or do you think the fact that I beat my friends doesn't
mean anything, and I'll most likely get slaughtered online Smile

2) I think I get most of the abbreviations now, but at the bounced game
list, after the press code "WGP-" it says "OWGP" or "OW-B". What does that
mean?

3) When you look at this "openings list"
(http://www.diplom.org/DipPouch/openings/openings.html) why do all the links
represented by little maps crash?

4) Are there other lists of game openings? I'd guess there would be more
spaces for people willing to take an abandoned power, but I can hardly find
any of these.

5) Does it make any sense to join a game that has been waiting for players
for 4 weeks or longer?

Well, thanks for any effort you guys make to answer my questions. I do hope
this is the right place to ask them, despite the nature of the other threads
in this newsgroup being somewhat expert.

Ath

I believe it means the former, and the best players in the world get
slaughtered on a regular basis, so you won't be any different.

I'll leave these questions to those who play on the judges.

There are many forums other then the judges out there for PBEM Dip which
have openings. This links page includes a bunch of them:
http://diplomiscellany.tripod.com/id2.html with short descriptions, though
the Cat23 link is down (for Cat23, join the Cat23-Ngame yahoogroup, and ask
for a game).

It certainly is appropriate to ask here.

If a player has experience in postal or hand-adjudicated play, but is
new to the judge, then GM discretion plays a large role in what kind of
support you'll get for the judge mechanics in a game not set up
specifically for novices. Join a game on the openings list moderated by
"(Cbabcock)" that is not designated novice in the comments and remind
me of your situation if you have any judge related questions.

It's a summary of the options that you'll see listed after "Press" when
you look at the game listing.

Apparently the script that generates the postscript maps is either
broken or disabled. You can surf to maps in postscript and other
formats by clicking on the "Game summary at floc.net" link.

> 4) Are there other lists of game openings? I'd guess there would be

In addition to the openings list, there is a queue for potential
replacement players and other forums for advertising openings by email.

> 5) Does it make any sense to join a game that has been waiting for

It depends on the game settings and the number of positions left to
fill. USAK:gp000002, for example, is in a fairly popular format. The
only reason that it's been waiting so long is the holidays. Some
variant with 20+ players on USDP, however, will have massive
abandonment the first turn.

I couldn't think of a better place.

Thank you for that. I'll probably be able to find one of the games you GM,
and will gladly take you up on that offer Smile

I see now. I was aiming at the press listing for Observers. But that's all
clear now.

I did see that, but I rather liked the idea of having a clickable map that
would allow you to quickly assess the situation without too much effort Smile

For a simple experience without all that trouble, just try www.stabbeurfou.org.
Register on the list and put you in the list, you are in a game within
a week.
All is intuitive, no esoteric command.

That was a novice game. England got booted under my policy of "Grace is
not an entitlement." For novice games, I get all the press messages so
that I can step in to help with common problems - sending passwords
with press, misunderstanding rules and just never getting around to
playing once the game starts. If a player is late for spring of 1901,
especially in a novice game, then the chances of them completing the
game are practically nil. When a novice player is late for the first
turn *and* hasn't even sent press, I just boot him from the game rather
than make all the other newbs wait for grace to expire and suffer mass
abandonment in fall.

Error messages are not always clear, but don't let Jeremie Lefrancois
get away with that shameless plug. We worked long and hard to get
him to rephrase his error messages so that they almost made sense. :-p

I hope Stabberfou gets some traction. It's a good project.

You'll want to get a history of the game from the beginning so that you
can read all of my helpful broadcasts. Very Happy

So I joined one of your games. It turned out one game was waiting for a
player to play England, so I joined.

I noticed that an error message I got took about 20 minutes to arrive. I had
typed signin instead of signon, and my broadcast didn't arrive. Just when i
started wondering whether maybe you don't get any broadcasts that you send
yourself, I got the message.
I do feel it's not overly clear that it's an error message. it simply states
"Signon command not encountered." I'd like something like: Error, mesage not
sent, reason:etc", but I'll probably get used to this.

One question that remains: How do I get to see a map of our game? Or do we
generate the first one after move 1?

Thanks

Responses to incorrect signons take longer to get back to you than
other responses. I'm not sure why.

> One question that remains: How do I get to see a map of our game?

Go to http://www.floc.net/observer.py?page=gameform

select the Judge your game is on, and correctly type the
game name in the game space, then click View. The page
that comes up will have links to several different maps.

Hmmm,

my attempt at ordering the judge to give me the history for our game all
lead to syntax errors...

Any tips for me?

history <game-name> FROM Jan 01 2007 TO Jan 19 2008 lines 1000000

If you know the actual start date, you can substitute it for 2007/01/01,
but sending just this line to the Judge should get you the full history.

I tried that, the judge replied with 'A single game must be specified
to HISTORY.'

Out of curiosity, are there any other undocumented commands? I'm
relatively new, and now I'm surprised by undocumented features.

Yes, that syntax assumes that you are signed on to the game.

Yes, you'll find a list (with descriptions) in the index file from the
judge. <wag> Send "get index" to the judge address. Also send "get
history" for more info on the history command.

The history command has two forms. In the one above, you don't signon
to your game, you just send that command to the Judge, and substitute
the name of the game you want the history if, in place of <game-name>.
This let's you pull up the history of any game that is in the Judge's
database, whether you are playing in it, or not. For a game you
involved in:

Signon <P><game-name> <your-password>
history FROM <start-date> TO <end-date> lines 1000000
Signoff

will work.

> Out of curiosity, are there any other undocumented commands? I'm

Well, they are documented in the Judge index file, and more
usefully, here:

http://devel.diplom.org/~njudge/docs/manual-all.htm
