Archived from groups: alt>games>half-life (more info?)

Today I was in a game store and had the Orange Box in my hands. I
read every word that I could find on it, and nowhere was there a
mention that an internet connection was required. Nowhere was there a
mention of Steam. I have a Steam account in order to play HL2, but
I'd rather not deal with them again if I don't have to. Do I have to
with the Orange Boxed offering?

I'll buy it eventually, but I'd really like to know before kicking out
the bucks for the second installment, plus the great seeming stuff
that comes with it. I put the OB back on the shelf until I could get
some feedback from you folks. If Steam is involved, I'll wait until
the $49.95 cost comes down significantly. If Steam is not involved,
I'll go back there this weekend and buy the thing for their listed
price.

I've never had a problem using Steam, it's just that their
requirements rub me against the grain.

I've never looked at the retail box (I bought mine from Steam), but I'm
surprised if it says nothing about needing an internet connection. The
games all require steam, just like HL2 and Ep1 did.

I think Steam's requirements are fairly realistic these days. The
majority of people do have broadband access, and the offline mode was
fixed quite some time ago. I realise that's no consolation to those
who still run dialup, but if you don't get problems with Steam, then the
best way to enjoy the game is just to 'get over it'.

Heck. I did suspect that, that was the case and was surprised that
nothing was mentioned on the retail box.

I won't 'get over it', but I can definitely 'live with it', providing
the games they (Steam) support are as fine as HL2 is. I agree that
rigid copy protection is needed today, but hope someday that someone
will find a better way. My Internet connection is a slow aDSL, so
their d/l's are a bit painful. Steam does provide a service that has
always been there when needed, so in my case at least, they have
proven to be a solid performer. I don't see how those with dial-up
can even consider Steamed games though and that's sad.

Thanks for the reply, Ben.

Tell me again how that works? When broadband went down for a couple of
days, I couldn't get any steam game to run... I selected offline mode,
and was then told I needed to connect to Steam to continue. Doh.

Still, it gave me an excuse to re-install Mafia for another look with a
better computer Smile

Had you logged out the last time you used Steam? If it loses your
login information, then that pretty much blocks offline mode.

Either that, or Steam detected the network connection you used to
connect (I guess you've got a router attached?) and it decided you
weren't actually offline, because it was able to reach your network.
(OK, so I guess offline mode isn't totally flawless in that regard, but
its more stable than it used to be).

Just tested it myself by yanking out my network cable, it waited for
about 10 sec, then let me drop straight into offline mode Smile

Clearly on the back of the box.

Thanks Rich. I totally missed it. I'd swear that I took a good look
too. Next time I have that package in my hands I will look harder
because I like to know what I missed and how. My eyes are not what
they were, but heck, after 72 years they are still good enough to let
me play games and have fun with them almost like a young fella. Fine
print escapes me often, so I suspect that, that info was written in
small print.

So, glad that I asked the forum and am appreciative of those patient
enough to respond.

More than you think, Scott - we've got McGrandpa, the majestically
ancient Cannon Fodder and (I think) the grandest daddy of them all,
Rene Lamontagne.

Several more are closing in fast Smile

Yep, Still here at 73 and playing HL2 E2 and portal and enjoying them no
end.
Just recovering from surgery, an aneurism and blood clot in my right leg.
They did an emergency "Popliteal Tibeal Bypass" Using a vien from the same
leg.
Jeez, I looked up images on the internet of this operation, Man it looks
more gorey than anything in our games. Smile)
I am coming along fine and slowly getting my strength back.

Glad to hear it Rene. Hope it wasn't gaming related - you may have to
plug the PC into the plasma and game from the sofa with your feet up! Wink

Figured that there are old farts out there older than me. Sure beats
playing card games like our grandfathers did, don't it?

Hang in there Rene. There're more great games coming.
