| I found references on internet about WOW private servers (free players
owned and emulated wow server). Any body that had actually used them
could give me his or her opinions about them and recommend any?

There is one that shines above all others and is identical to a
blizzard server in almost all ways however they are about to implement
a payment system i think it was 5 dollars per 3 months (US$) all the
others use cheap hacks to get the game to be more like the real deal eg
vendor buyback is done with macros, mail checking and so on all make
your characters "speak" when the events take place. targetting is
horrible and on some i found my mage coulnd even eat or drink!
your much better off repeatedly using trial accounts on the real
servers, sure you are restricted to not trading and leveling past 20 as
well as a lot of other things but hey it's free and it's still a hell
of a lot of fun. If you make one level 20 of each class/faction you'll
be playing a long time >> Stay informed about: Opinions on Private Servers |

LOL! It's amazing the lengths some people will go to to avoid paying
Blizzard their $0.50 a day Skip a can of pop or a candy bar every
other day, and you can play the real thing without the foolishness.

For me, it's not the money. I'd like to be able with my kids, on our own
network, without dealing with the "chat" and immature behavior on many of
the realms. We could have our own kickin' team, what with the twin mages,
the paladin in a pony tail, and my sissy warrior. ;-P

Are there any games these days with a moderately grand scope (not
necessarily as big as WoW) that allow co-op play for a small number of
players and private server hosting?
I used to play Doom I/II with a friend of mine, going through every
WAD collection we could find in co-op mode. I haven't seen a decent
co-op game in ages though.

Putting aside all questions of legality for a moment, what I can't
figure is why anyone would want to invest time and effort into
building up a character on a 'private' server that might just
disappear at any moment.
I'd much rather pay fifty cents a day and have a high level of
assurance that the server and my character will still be there
tomorrow.

Same here, friends from cs and mirc together, without having to deal with
the "barrens" chat for example

I played NWN in single mode, quite some time ago. I don't recall much
about it, except that it wasn't strictly linear like a lot of such
games are. The ability to wander off into some random, and often
foolish, activity is key.
