If anyone on the group has purchased the Dell XPS 600 loaded, I need some
basic opinion on how it's running FS9 for you, and I would appreciate some
input on how you view Dell's special XPS support.
PLEASE, if it's a negative comment, no need to bash Dell here. Just let me
know it's negative.
Many thanks

Sorry, I have not owned a Dell, but they have excellent reputation.
Only problem I see with the XPS line is they are all configured with the
slower more expensive Pentium rather than AMD processor. I would
configure a faster, lower priced machine from Alienware. I have had
mine for several years without a single problem.
Rumours are that Dell is going to be aquiring Alienware in the near
future. Apparently their XPS line isn't geting the high end market
acclaim that Alienware enjoys, so rumor has it thay will buy the market.
I just hope if they do pick up Alienware that they won't mess up a good
thing.
For the best gaming computer go with Alienware or find a local reputable
company to custom build you an AMD system. >> Stay informed about: Want Opinion on Dell XPS |

I've built my own since 1990, but three years ago compared what I'd spend
for a new FS9 system vs. a Dell XPS (considering everything from identical
handpicked hardware to software, less monitor, already assembled, tested,
and shipped to my door), and I bought the Dell, for equal or perhaps less
cost. Haven't had a problem since then, so can't say how support is. Not
counting a bungled MS Office 97 install, NOT recommended with XP, and I did
a total reinstall of everything... It's still purring along flawlessly to
this day, and I really hate the thought of discarding it for something to
run FSX/Vista.. It's going to take a hell of a sell campaign to make me
switch...... >> Stay informed about: Want Opinion on Dell XPS |

understandable.....
takes me about 45minutes to do hardware, and about 1hour for software.....
the longest it takes for a new person taking it slow is about 6hours...
surely you could do that on a sunday?

I have that very same XPS600 from Dell. When I bought it I also considered
Alienware and found Dell a lot cheaper for much the same component wise.
This is now my second Dell and have no complaints, in fact the opposite the
company support is superb from my experience. With my first Dell, the
volume control on the champagne flute speaker developed a dry solder joint
with associated crackle. One call to Dell and no questions asked the very
next day a complete and updated sound system was delivered.
Yes they may be a bit more expensive than home built, but they really are
high quality items and robust.
I don't have the time or inclination to build it myself.
Oh yeah - and it looks pretty good too. >> Stay informed about: Want Opinion on Dell XPS |

I loaded it on my wifes Gateway running XP, one of their $399 Celeron
specials only used to surf the web & email, no problem what so ever. Only
reason to use it at all was to have spell checker with Outlook Express.
A little later I upgraded my PC to the XPS, loaded Office 97 for the same
reason, and it went bannanas! It was over three years ago so I don't
remember all the flaky things it was doing, and it was doing a BUNCH, but I
do recall Outlook tried to take over everything, and even it wasn't right,
plus wouldn't accept any changes to "its" defaults. System restore didn't
work, uninstall just left a bigger mess, and M/S support even had/has about
a 3 or 4 page list of "Office 97 cleanup" items in the files and registry to
get rid of it, but that didn't work either. At the time a friend in IT said
he'd been told that Office 97 was not on their recommended list for XP,
which I never checked, but don't doubt it for a minute now.. Anyhow, I
figured it was a good time to get rid of some bloatware Dell included that I
had no use for, so it was reformat and a nice clean reinstall exactly the
way I wanted it, sans '97.....
Nary a problem since. >> Stay informed about: Want Opinion on Dell XPS |
