I've read this one somewhere. I apologize for not letting the original
author to be referred in here.
This is, BTW, the tactic we use in our guild.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Onyxian Warders
These are the "trash mobs" of the Onyxia's Lair instance. When you zone
into the Lair, there will be 4 Onyxian Warders guarding the passage to
Onyxia's chamber. Three of the Warders patrol back and forth over a
long, winding stretch of corridor, and another waits near the entrance
to Onyxia's inner chamber.
Each Warder is a "raid elite" mob, with levels ranging from 60+ to 63+.
The only appreciable differences between levels are how much hurt they
put out, and how much they can take before going down. Their basic
abilities are the same:
1) Single-target physical attack.
2) A frontal "cleave" type physical AoE attack.
3) A moderately large radius "fire nova" AoE fire magic attack.
The last two AoEs are quite mean. So mean, in fact, that almost anybody
but a Main Tank getting heavy healing support will die gloriously
quickly if they get within range of an Onyxian Warder's AoE attacks.
As such, the approach to fighting Onyxian Warders is quite simple:
1) A single MT gains aggro from a Warder, by body or ranged
pulling, and ensures that he positions the Warder far enough from the
main raid group that they are outside of the AoE effects.
2) MT healers keep the MT alive.
3) All other raid members hold fire until the MT has gained
sufficient aggro to ensure he will not lose it.
4) Once the MT has sufficient aggro control, all other raiders
are given an attack order, whereupon they burn down the Onyxian Warder
with ranged attacks only.
Due to the devastating nature of the Warder's AoE attacks, it is vital
that only the MT be within range of them; otherwise the healers' mana
will be spread too thin to keep the raid alive.
While engaging the Onyxian Warders, it is necessary for the MT to stay
within LOS and healing range of his healers, but (as mentioned before)
far enough away that the raid will not be killed by Warder AoEs. This
can prove tricky, given that the corridor leading to Onyxia's Lair
twists and turns a bit, and includes roller-coaster dips and rises that
can block LOS and make certain spots very bad choices to tank a Warder
in.
If you are the current MT, you must stay aware of the position of the
MT healers. Do not break LOS if you can avoid it; do not run too far
ahead. The opposite also holds. If you are an MT healer, move up to
maintain range to the MT, and be ready to reposition quickly to stay in
range for heals if the MT or Warder make any sudden moves, for whatever
reason.
