Is there a site where you could find a list of D&D spells from as many
books as possible with the [Earth] descriptor (for example)? Or better
yet, something like: all the transmutations with the [Earth] descriptor
that don't allow a save?

I know there has to be some, at least of the first kind, but I can't
seem to find any.

One thing that would be really, really useful, for the interface of such
a database, would be if it could show not just the spell level for
various classes, e.g. that one spell is spell level X for Sorc/Wiz and
spell level Y for Bards, but also show the character level at which
various classes become able to cast that spell.

As I've said before, it can be misleading if the game says that one
spell is 5th level for Bards but 6th for Sorc/Wiz, because it may very
well be the case that a Wizard or Sorcerer becomes able to cast it long
before the Bard does.

Well, with enough practice, you get to know when the classes get their
spell levels. But then, with enough practice, I guess you'd get to know
all [Earth] spells too, so you're right, that would be a useful bit of
information to include.

And even if you get it sooner, it's a mixed blessing. A bard can cast
suggestion at 4th level while the sorcerer needs to wait until 6th, but
sorcerous suggestions have are DC 13 + Cha, while bardic ones are DC 12
+ Cha...

Someone needs to drop them into a spreadsheet, or even a proper
database. I usually just visually scan the character sheet on the
appropriate columns, it's quicker than a mechanical search most of the time.

I'd make one up for you, but without a convenient base to work from
it looks a lot like work. 8]

A database would be ideal. Spreadsheets are frequently used for this
purpose, but it's more efficient to use a "proper" database. Leave
spreadsheeting to handling columns of figures and doing calculations,
and all will be well Smile

Someone should develop a FileMaker Pro database for this, or else a
db in any program where the file output can be imported into FM Pro.
That would rock! Just don't volunteer me for the job Wink

Happy gaming,
Eric

Eh. I just noticed that there's a spell search in my preferred online
SRD too:

Still, thanks.

Interestingly enough, the results are different between the two... yours
doesn't include Meld into Stone, apparently because it has a distinction
between an explicit "None" for saving throw versus "<null>".

If someone had the content, I could host it, set up web displays etc for it.
