Looking to try WoW for the first time and was wondering if there is a
built-in voice program or what the best 3rd party program is to use.

I am a game voice user in the past so this question is based on that
experience; for the voice software you recommend, is it best to just
run it on one of the PC's of the users playing together; or is there a
server online; or is it best to run on an extra PC?

Thanks. Sorry if my questions left out some info or seemed disconnected.
I haven't gamed in awhile but I figured this is the best place to ask.

There's no built-in voice chat in WoW. Can't say what the best is, but my
guild is using Ventrilo and that works great. I know some people are
TeamSpeak, but I never tried that so can't comment on it's quality.

My guild uses Ventrilo as well. We used TeamSpeak when we were in a
previous MMORPG; I don't know if there was a reason for the switch.
From an end-user standpoint they seem about the same.

Actually, we used Ventrillo over Teamspeak because of sound quality. By
default, TS is vewry low quality, with Vent being very good.

Or at least that was our impression.

Ventrilo is a lot more popular among the guilds on our server. I know of
about 5 guilds that use ventrilo, including the top 3. I dont know of any
that use teamspeak.

Well, yes, the default sound quality in TS is pretty low (so you can use
it also over telephone I think). But then again it's easy to adjust the
level for a channel and you can override it for yourself also if you want.

As I'm on the same server as Urbin (even if on the other side), I'm also
a TS user. Have used Ventrillo once in 20 months.

You will need to use a third party product. The two options are Ventrilo or
TeamSpeak. It seems that most other posters are using Ventrilo, whereas my
guild is using TeamSpeak. Actually, all three guilds I have been in on my
server use TeamSpeak and I've never met anyone in game who asked for a
Ventrilo server adress, they always ask for TeamSpeak. I don't know whether
it's a server preference or a local issue (I'm just wondering if the people
on an english speaking server rather use Vent, and those on german speaking
servers use TS... pure speculation Smile

Can't talk about Vent, but with Teamspeak you can download and run your own
server easily. However, this is probably not a good idea unless you have a
very high upstream bandwidth, as the server will cause considerable load and
may impact your game performance due to network traffic.

Servers are available on the net, some very cheap, you might even find free
ones (don't know if there are).

Cheers
