I am in much the same position, about the only thing that is tempting me

A move away from the tourney mindset isn't interesting?
A move by *GW* to offer retail discounts isn't interesting?
Yeah, that is weird.

40k Discussion groups are rife with anti-LatD rhetoric -
"The new Chaos Codex invalidates the old LatD list!"
"Someone told me LatD is illegal now, so it must be true!"
Yeah, my Cult Covens were exiled from Alpha in the new Dex.
But now they're *back* as Mutant Mobs in a LatD list.
The 40kA rules name LatD *specifically* as a valid list.
Better, they now have unrestricted access to IG Units.
Blackheart wrote:
> you can only wait for the turn-around for so long
Historically, GW lets no good deed go unpunished.
Many people thought Space Marine to be surprisingly good.
It sold like hotcakes and was tremendously popular.
Clearly, this situation could not be allowed to continue . . .
Every once in a while, GW goofs and does something right.
The trick is in recognizing those things early on.
If you're not quick, they'll 'fix' them before you can buy.
> at this point for me.. the pricing isn't even a positive
Price, by itself, isn't going to get me to buy anything.
> I hope it works out for someone
I hope it works out for me. :- )
I've already got a 40kA LatD army; all I need is the rules.
estarriol wrote:

Thousands of these things will be sold via eBay.
This will still be true five years hence. Or ten.
The only thing that will change is the price . . .

I agree completely. Its partly why I almost never play my LatD as I
can't be bothered moving that many minis. Both to the venue and on the
board.
Thats part of reason why our recent skirmish campaign is best fun
gaming I've had for years.
Few number of guys to get really involved with. Not just ooh lost
another 20 guard/skaven.
The wfb skirmish campaign has almost got me intrested in 40k again for
a really Rogue trader campaign. ie following around a rogue trader as
he meets aliens, inquistors, mechanicus explorators etc.

Yeah but if you play it. It'll be rarely and at a club, store, few
guys together so you'll join with the CSM player and have 5k.

Go custom skirmish campaigns again. Can field all those old models of
5 zoats etc. >> Stay informed about: [40k] Official Apocalypse Updates |

Hear, hear.

2 players w/ 1500pt ea = 40k. 4 players w/ 1500pt ea = Apocalypse.
And no necessary expenditure beyond one player getting the rules.

Isn't there an "Unorthodox Armies" CA list for them? [searches]
+++
GENESTEALER CULT IG ARMY
- Tim Huckelbery
RESTRICTED TROOPS: Conscript Platoon
The army can now include Conscript Platoons.
SKILLS AND DRILLS: Hardened Fighters
Infantrymen have a better WS value.
SKILLS AND DRILLS: Veterans
May include more than one Hardened Veteran Unit.
SPECIAL EQUIPMENT: Chem-Inhalers
Infantrymen have a better chance with Leadership checks.
RESTRICTED TROOPS: Heavy Weapon Platoon
The army can now include Heavy Weapon Platoons.
The Conscripts doctrine represents recent Brood Brother recruits.
Chem-Inhalers represent the control of the Hivemind over the cult
members.
The Veterans doctrine is used to indicate Genestealer Hybrids.
Heavy Weapon Platoon indicates infiltration of the highest echelons of
government.
Brood Brother fanaticism = the Hardened Fighters doctrine.
+++
That may not be tourney-legal, but it's a start.

GW could follow-up 40kA with a Universal Skirmish set.
Generic rules for both WH systems would be sweet.
They could use the best mechanics from Mord and Necro for a start.
> Go custom skirmish campaigns again
GW needs to develop a universal campaign system, too.
But, not til *after* they release the updated skirmish rules.
I don't suppose someone on RGMW's already done either?

Most likely, but I don't play the typical maxed-out Oblits and whatnot.
I'm not overjoyed with the Demon nerfing, but we'll see what happens
with rumours of a later book to come. Finally being able to get some
bikes for my Death Guard is pretty neat though.

I'm not sure if you're mistaking my apathy for a negative feeling about
40KA. I'm just not interested in a game that I was quite happily
playing 15 years ago in a more manageable scale. I like 40K as a
"skirmish", to the point where I even got rid of my Nid army because I
got tired of moving 100 figures around the board.
I do like the idea of price drops and killing off the tournament players
(especially the ones who can't even play a social game in a civil way),
but neither of those filter down into 40K for someone who already has
their armies and doesn't play in competitions (which is me).

It's excellent that "old" lists are going to be supported, though I'd
like to see some really old-school stuff return (like Stealer cults -
though it's probably not the scale for them).

Neither of those points are going to make me play the game though. But
from a general "Yay for the hobby" aspect I'm happy.

There was a guy came up to our club from interstate looking for some
games (with a Necron army, which should have been a dead giveaway). He
quibbled over every minor point and basically played like a real prick.
Turned out he was a comp gamer looking for practice before the GT -
after two games nobody else would play him so he never came back.
Legend has it he's still a cock but he's switched to Nids.

It's not the expenditure that worries me (pirated PDFs ftw), it's the
amount of time sunk into playing a game. I don't have the inclination
to sit around a table playing one game for more than about two hours,
and with the volume of figures that are going to be shuffling about
that's probably how long each turn is going to take.

Heh. I had a Genestealer with the MoK for a while.
(A stylised Khorne symbol painted on its forehead in red).
So many people asked me why it was there, I painted over it.
Hmmm . . . I've still got some Ork Hybrids somewhere.
I gave my GS Cult to a kid that decided to play Ultramarines. :- \

I think I still have a couple of plastic Stealers floating around with
MoKs, but they are just lurking in a box these days - I was tempted to
enter a couple of 40K comps with an army of 71 Stealers and a Broodlord
just to piss people off but in the end I could never be bothered.

Sadly, Blackie speaks the truth here. It's like Iron Warriors or any
other overly effective army, people see it and copy it. You see the
same in any competition. In 1/24 slot car racing people saw a guy win
with one body style and all copied it, then he switched just to prove
it was him and not the body. Though in this case, I think it might be
the 71 Stealers might.

That's fine by me, I'll just keep creating insano armies that become the
new fad, then designing the army that beats it soundly. I'll turn all
GW tournament play into a slow, incredibly expensive version of rock,
