Device Manager - expand Sound Video and Game Controllers - Click on
the entry for AC'97 Audio - click on Properties - General Tab - Check
the Disable in this hardware profile box, Un-check the Exists in all
hardware profiles box - Click OK - Reboot the system. Shutdown the
computer- Add your new sound card hardware on to the computer. Whilst
you have the computer case open, clean up the dust bunnies that have
collected over time and also check all the fans and clean the dirt
from the CPU heat-sink. Boot the system and follow the prompts to
install the new sound card drivers. You can have both the on-board
sound chip and the new hardware card working at the same time, but I
advise against it for several reasons, takes up system resources for
one thing and simply creates potential problems for another. You can
always disable the new sound card device and drivers from device
manager and re-enable the on-board sound device and drivers anytime
you need to use one and not the other. Add-0n sound cards are almost
always better than on-board sound chips in performance and audio
effects anyway.
