Finally got around to playing HL Blueshift today, never actually bought
it (just HL and OPFOR), but if you have the original HL and install
Steam, BS comes for free and I'd never tried it.
Anyway, the point of this is, I'm in Captive Freight, I've just broken
Dr. Rosenburg out of his container and I'm in the adjacent building
killing marines. However, everytime I cross the threshold of the doorway
into the basement (after coming down the stairs), the game crashes
back to the desktop. Any ideas?
Also, I have to admit, I'm kinda disappoint by BS, many of the original
HL mods were much better quality than this (USS Darkstar for example!)

I am not sure but I think there was a patch for that.
Long time since I played the game.

Sorry can't help with your problem but I'd agree this was the weakest
game in the series. I had to have it though... just for completeness
and it did have it's moments.. >> Stay informed about: Odd blueshift bug |

LOL, don't compare Valve games with mods
Valve has a limit on the time they can use, a mod team has seldom this
restriction
USS Darkstar was made by Manke, who later made They Hunger Series and formed
Black Widow Games
http://www.blackwidowgames.com/
The intro scene resembles those of the orginal HL and also OP, if anything
install the mod just to view the intro .... it's awesome
Link to USS Darkstar
http://manke.planethalflife.gamespy.com/darkstar.htm
Btw: USS Darkstar was selected by Valve Software for presentation to the
press at the first Half-Life Mod Expo'99 at San Francisco.
And just for info ...
They Hunger: Lost Souls will be featured in the March 2008 edit of PC Gamer

Although Valve didn't actually make it, it was created by Gearbox
Software, who, at the time, also had a hand in creating the first lot of
really professional looking CS maps with custom textures - cs_backalley
and de_train (Which both first appeared in CS beta 5, and both survive
in CS1.6 to this day I believe )
Tangent/rant/side-comment - I hope Valve get around to bringing
cs_backalley back into CS:S. afaik, they own all the rights to it -
shame to let a good map like that go to waste!

It has its moments though
In the start of the game (before the disaster) you find a controlroom with
three screens
You can see ...
- Gordon Freeman on his way to the chestchamber
- G-Man riding by in a subtrain
- Gina Cross on her way to the testchamber with equipment

I saw that, I was wondering if that was freeman or not... I sort of
assumed it would be like the way a user plays, so you'd recognise him by
the fact that he was bouncing down the corridor, strafing left to right..
> - Gina Cross on her way to the testchamber with equipment
Is that who that is?
Does that suggest that HL2 was already being plotted out when they did

Playing without sound or do you have problems with the sound equipment?
Hmm the scientist says "Good morning Mr Freeman" or something similar ....
Btw after your character has left the tram and waiting for the security door
to open you see Freeman riding by in his tram

Yep

Gina Cross is the holographic guide for Freeman during the Hazard Course and
later a main character in Decay

From what I've gathered (reading various interviews and other articles
which feature Valve people), they began plotting HL2 within 6 months of
releasing HL1. Apparently one of the reasons TF2 was cancelled, was
that it was changed to use the Source engine (Where it had originally
been planned as a HL1/goldsrc mod) - except Valve didn't want to tell
anyone the real reason at the time, since it would've given away the big
secret about HL2.

Since we're reminiscing:
Anyone remember Gunman Chronicles? I believe that was also a
commercial release of what began life as a HL mod.
I think I was one of the few people who actually played it. And, that
being said, I think I was one of the few people of *those* few people
who actually liked it.
Was that a Gearbox title as well? >> Stay informed about: Odd blueshift bug |

Originally created for Quake then moved to Quale II and then HL

Nope
It was released made by Rewolf/Vivendi
