Post subject: Oblivion saved game restore problem (minor spoilers)

|
I have a backed up Oblivion saved game (.ess) file that I'm trying to
restore. I copy it to my My Documents\My Games\Oblivion\Saves
directory, and it shows up fine on the list when I load Oblivion.
However, when I load it I seem to be in a sort of time warp. I had
already done the first mission for the Grey Fox. But when I load the
saved game, it pops up a message that I need to fence xxx gold and the
Grey Fox might notice. Then a few seconds later it pops up a message
that I should talk to someone in the Imperial City about seeing the
Grey Fox.
Now the really weird thing is that I have unique items in my inventory
that I obtained when I went on that mission for the Grey Fox (like the
letter about the Night Mother's cowl). But according to my quest list
I haven't even met the Grey Fox yet.
Is there any trick to restoring a single saved game like that? From
what I read it should be very straightforward.
I guess I might have to replay everything (arg), but I wonder if
things will get more screwed up. >> Stay informed about: Oblivion saved game restore problem (minor spoilers) |

I did install several mods before I started playing, then I played
several hours and saved the game. Maybe the mods were/are the
problem. I still have the same mods installed though.
It's definitely the right save game, but it has inconsistencies in it
(I have an item from a quest that the save game says I haven't been on
yet.) I even tried erasing the entire save game directory and
restoring my backup copy, didn't make any difference. I guess I'll
just to start playing from where I am and hopefully the inconsistency
won't hurt anything. I hate redoing stuff. > >> Stay informed about: Oblivion saved game restore problem (minor spoilers) |

The only tricky thing I've found is making sure you have the same mods
loaded as when you saved the game. Otherwise, you probably just made a
mistake on which saved game to restore. Maybe you used the quicksave
instead of doing a real save or something along those lines.

Just because they were installed doesn't mean they were "active". Check to
make sure the same mods are checkmarked as were when you saved.

Ok, I'll double-check that I have the same mods checked.
I really really don't want to restart, I've been playing the same
character on and off since Oblivion was released! >> Stay informed about: Oblivion saved game restore problem (minor spoilers) |

This problem could definitely be caused by having a slightly different
set/order of mods loaded, and the only real cure is to use an editor
like Wrye Bash (http://wrye.ufrealms.net/Wrye%20Bash.html) to fix it
manually. Personally, I think this is too much trouble to go to, and
would just restart with another character.
The cause of the problem is how Bethesda assigned their universal id
numbers, called FormIDs, based on load order. A different set of mods
means that the ID that used to refer to a sword in your original game
might now point to an axe instead - it's pretty obvious how much of a
problem this can potentially become. An unfixed save _might_ work ok,
or it might crash your game entirely the next time a script tries to
use an ID number that now means something else instead. >> Stay informed about: Oblivion saved game restore problem (minor spoilers) |
