Oblivion has less tolerance for timing delays caused by disk file access.
Like Morrowind, it helps to install Oblivion on a freshly built OS (or
even better, on a disk partition all by itself) so that large data files
aren't fragmented into many pieces. A static virtual memory allocation,
asopposed to one managed by Windows, might be helpful too.
That's the most typical fix, and it assumes that there's not some other
problem related to outdated graphics drivers or another active process
like a virus checker or an automatic application update going on in the
background. Hope that gets you pointed in the right direction.

On other words, Oblivion still has a crash bug that Bethesda never fixed.
It never crashes during game play on me but occasionally it will crash when
exiting the game. I don't want a static pagefile either so the issue is
with the game and not my PC. >> Stay informed about: Oblivion: Does yours crash your PC? |

Patch Oblivion
Get new video drivers
Get new audio drivers
Is your BIOS up to date?
Don't run 906 programs in the background
Run CCleaner
Don't use so many mods at once
Defrag your harddrive using a GOOD defragger like JKDefrag >> Stay informed about: Oblivion: Does yours crash your PC? |

Aside from the other suggestions people give you, make sure you don't
have any extra MP3 CODECs on the system (IIRC, it particularly didn't
like FFShow). If you installed a CODEC Pack, you may wish to uninstall
it and reinstall the individual CODECs seperately until you determine
which ones are causing the problem. >> Stay informed about: Oblivion: Does yours crash your PC? |

What graphics card are you using, and with what driver revision? If I
recall correctly, Oblivion should offer up a DirectX 9.0 test application
from the program launcher that helps to validate if your hardware is up to
spec. I'd go with that as my troubleshooting starting point.

I'd rather put up with the crashes than do that That's assuming they
stay at their current fairly infrequent level that is. >> Stay informed about: Oblivion: Does yours crash your PC? |

If you are using WinXP, run "msconfig" and turn off all Startup
Programs, then also disable any virus killers.
Oblivion (with all latest patches) does not crash my machine.

If something is waiting too long for data from the disk it can cause
timing problems. >> Stay informed about: Oblivion: Does yours crash your PC? |
