It's true that it's on rails but not as much so as HL2. When you said
in a "D&D world", it gave the impression (to me anyway) that you were
referring only to the theme of the game. I would say Dark Messiah is
more of a half-way point between a rails shooter like HL2 and Oblivion
than being closer to HL2. Oblivion does have an open world and is
much closer to a true RPG, but some RPG purists complained it was too
much of a hack-n-slash with the combat, and that the adaptive
difficulty (making it easier at lower levels) took away the essence of
what an RPG is.

Either way, I'm not really an RPG purist myself, but the 3 games the
OP asked about are probably 3 of my all time favorites, so I got the
impression his likes/dislikes would be similar, and if that's the case
he would love Dark Messiah.

Well that's unfortunate.. but it currently can be had for $15-20, and
it's unlikely to get more expensive, so maybe if you upgrade your PC
you can try again.

It may also be that they never patched the demo and that you would
have luck with the retail version + patch.

I loved Oblivion. One thing that I hated, but not enough to stop
playing the game was that when you level up the monsters leveled up.

It completely took away the need to build up your character.

It lacked the need for gold.

This made a game that was fun for all and I understand why the game
designers did it this way.

It would have been better had they allowed you to travel between towns
freely but made traveling off road and underground more hazardous.

Had they relied on leveling up to make your character stronger even an
unskilled player could complete the harder quests eventually, you
would just have to kill a lot more boars to do it. <southpark

I think you might be right, but I can't get the demo to run on my
machine.

Well, you won't get same kind of the satisfaction of gathering gold /
etc like in a regular RPG.. but there are some interesting twists,
like gathering blocks of certain types of metal, and taking them into
a blacksmiths shop, melting them down yourself, pouring the molten
metal into the mold, etc to make special swords.

Very well done.

Oh, and the demo would probably only show you the combat aspect of the
game as I recall, instead of some of the more RPG-like stuff.

Actually it is 10 bucks plus shipping at Amazon.com

I just ordered one.

I hope it will work.

I can give it to my nephew if it doesn't.

I am pretty sure I have the hardware to run it.

Nice, ten bucks is a steal. Be sure your nephew gives it back if you
ever change or reconfigure your PC Smile the MP game is a blast,
although I swear it seems to have slightly higher requirements than
the SP game (quite a few outdoor environments maybe).

I have listened to you guys praising the Dark Messiah, and have
recalled I also wanted it at some stage. So I went to eBay and bought
it for a similar sum of money. I am now awaiting it comin'.

It's too late for your game, but there are mods available that
mostly fix that problem. IIRC, one is called "No Obsolete Monsters"
and/or "No Obsolete Loot". I'm about level 9 right now and I can
really beat up on some wolves! Very Happy

It's great fun - combat heavy, but the engine makes it a joy. You
never get tired setting orcs on fire, or kicking them off ledges.

And exploring is rewarded, with some nice armour and weapons in
hard-to-get-to places - and secret stashes, too.

Don't forget backing up a ledge to bait certain types of "lunging"
enemies, only to time their lunge, side strafe out of the way and
watch them go flying off the cliff without any intervention on your
part! Smile

I'm currently replaying it, with more points into the spells (last
time I was an almost pure stealth/combat mix).

It's fun to wait while an enemy charges you, then ice the floor when
he gets close. He sldes, stops right in front of you, just in time to
get a sword to the heart Smile
