Why isn't Northern Ireland represented in FSX? I wanted to fly to
Belfast IFR and it didn't show up in the list of cities. I flew up
there VFR from Dublin in a 172 and landed at Belfast Airport which was
quite nice and wondered why I couldn't fly up there IFR using FSX.
Go figure........

Ireland is listed in my countries. Fine. North Ireland is not in my
list of countries. Not fine. Ergo, Belfast is not listed.
How am I supposed to know the names of the airports in North Ireland
if North Ireland is not in the list of countries and Belfast isn't in
my list of cities??? Huh??? If I knew the ICAO codes for the
airports, I would likely find them, but I shouldn't need to know them
for Belfast.
I flew all over the jungles of South America, dodged parrots, fought
with monkeys, struggled with snakes and still found every
airport.....but North Ireland.....noooooooo.

I have just had a look at FSX, first time for months, and Aldergrove
EGAA is there. This is the main airport for NI and it is, IRL, split in
two. Half military and half civilian. Belfast city EGAC is also listed.
Just thought I would sneak that in before Ibby.

Belfast is in North Ireland , not Ireland and Northern Ireland is a part of
Great Britain. So I would not expect Belfast to be listed under Ireland

Hi Arthur,
As a NI resident I can certainly confirm that both Aldergrove
(International) and Belfast City are on the map.
You have perhaps forgotten about the border. Ireland in FSX or FS9
covers the Republic of Ireland and both the aforementioned airports
are located within UK.
I have an add-on with puts the famous Harland and Wolfe Cranes
adjacent to the City Airport. Titanic was off course constructed
here. I The download is available from Avsim, its for FS2002 but
still works in FSX. The Mourne Mountains which famously 'Sweep' down
to the sea are 30 miles south west of Belfast City Airport

Well you did beat me Mike as I have been slow at getting on here
today.
Too busy at work to sneak a peek on the net ;-(
I'm glad you said that about the runways as I always thought runway
35/17 was military as RAF Aldergrove is on the opposite side of the
airfield to the commercial airport. Despite all this FS ATC quite
often directs me to this runway ;-(

Belfast hasnt been part of Ireland for over 300 years!
Hence all the Troubles in the 60s, 70, 80s and 90s
We are governed by Direct Rule from London and thankfully within the
last few years from Stormont in Belfast which has a joint executive
setup with the main Unionist (Protestant) and Nationist (Catholic)
political parties power sharing. This has given us some control on
local events as before we had very little say as a voter.

Many thanks, gentlemen. Your explanations are clear as glass. I'm
really good at geography but occasionally politics gets in the way. I
think by the weekend, I'll be out of the U.K. and into France, where
nothing has changed since the Romans were in charge.
Don't worry about Dallas.......if he doesn't know, he
asks.....often : )

Many thanks, Ibby. I have a really good Oxford Atlas by my side
whenever I fly in places other than Toronto, and it clearly shows the
political markings of the Emerald Isle. It was my fault for not
checking the United Kingdom in the 'countries' drop-down menu on
FSX....it just didn't occur to me to do so, and I spent about 15
minutes trying to figure out why I couldn't find any airports in North
Ireland. Thanks to help I've received here, I've since found what
I've been looking for.
I must say that FSX presents the countryside in Ireland beautifully as
well as the air fields and I did see the mountains south of Belfast
while dodging them at low altitude in my 172. Ireland is well-
named....it's beautiful, green landscape is a joy to behold (I set the
season for summer and time for midday since I'm sightseeing and not
testing my flying skills). So many of the folks I worked with during
my life have been from the U.K., I feel a special kinship to the
countries. It is indeed a pleasure to see the sites there using the
sim, as I know I won't be seeing them IRL. FSX is, for me, the next
best thing.
Once again, gentlemen, many thanks for your help.

I think I can see your problem Arthur, and I will try and explain,
hopefully without muddying the waters further.
1. The British Isles. This covers England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland
(North and South) and all the surrounding islands.
2. The UK. This covers the same as above, less Southern Ireland, which
is a state in it's own right.
3. Ireland. The island of Ireland is split into two. Northern Ireland is
part of the UK, Southern Ireland is a separate country/state.
So, if you want to select Aldergrove or Belfast in the flight Sim you
will find them under The United Kingdom. If you wanted to select Shannon
airport you would find it under Ireland. Clear as mud, eh
God! I hope Dallas doesn't read this post, he doesn't even know what a
pram is!
