How do I use a Soulstone? Yesterday, I was in 1K Needles with someone
and she was killed. The soulstone that I had was soulbound to me and,
for the life of me I could not figure out how to use it.

Did I need to target her when creating it & do we have to be grouped?
Also, I was killed for the first time in Tanaris (too low) and had one
on me, but it seemed to be of no use. If there's no reason to waste a
soul shard on creating one for myself, then this is good news.

Sorry for the stupid questions,

Morag

You create the soulstone, as you've done, using the appropriate spell,
at the cost of one soul shard. Then, you target the individual you
wish to use the soulstone on and right click the stone. There will be
a short animation, and the targetted player (which can include
yourself) r4eceives the soulstone buff. I don't believe that you are
required to be in the same party.

Ah, OK. I bet I didn't target myself first before I right-clicked.
Now *that's* really stupid!

Thanks all!

The whole soulstone mechanic needs a fix, believe it or not, this is a
common question I have run into from other warlocks. As it currently
stands, the tooltip should say "Soulstone, instructions not included.

First you create a soulstone out of a soulshard. You can't trade a
soulstone. You can't sell a soulstone. You can't equip a soulstone.
It only exists to store a soul. It takes time to create the soulstone
to begin with, and until you use it, it just takes up space in your
inventory.

Then to store a soul, you either right click on the soulstone, then
click on the player you want to store the soul of, or you target the
player and right click the soulstone to store the soul. Either way
the end result is the same, the soul is stored in a 2 step process.

If you can't trade the soulstone what is the purpose of having it? I
say change the whole mechanic such that storing a soul is the result
of a single step process instead of a 2 step process. Either make
soulstones tradeable, such that whoever has the soulstone in their
inventory can use it upon death. Still a 2 step process if you plan
on giving it to someone other than yourself. Or create a spell called
Store Soul which you can cast on either yourself or another person
such that once cast, their soul is stored for 30 minutes. Give the
spell a 30 minute cooldown that shares the cooldown with all ranks of
that spell. Make it consume a soulshard much like the soulstone
already does. This turns it into a 1 step process no matter who you
cast it on. They already took the tedium out of creating healstones
with the Soulwell, why not make storing souls easier?

one other point is that you right click the soulstone you just made. I
was trying to explain it to a new lock and they said it wouldnt' work.
he kept right clicking the spell to create the soulstone. It takes
all kinds.

I did the same thing, though eventually figured it out for myself.
Whats worse is to test it I went out and got myself killed by a level
6 demon dog outside of UC. Imagine my surprise when I couldn't just
rez. I figured something went wrong, so I tried to create a 2nd
soulstone and it told me I had too many of that item. I really didn't
know what to do, so I tried random clicking, which gave my pointer a
blue highlight after I right clicked. This was a "D'oh" moment for
sure.

Another one that got me was soulshards. I hit level 10, I did the
quest to get my voidwalker, and when I tried to cast the spell it told
me "Missing Reagent Soulshard". Being the smart guy that I am, I
remembered seeing a reagent vendor, so I went to him with no luck.
Had to ask another warlock in the guild how to create a soulshard.
Turned out I learned my level 10 spells without actually reading what
they did. Newbness, I don't miss it.

The 2.1 patch changed it so you now need to be in the same party:

Soulstones can no longer be used on targets not in your
party or raid. In addition, the soulstone buff will now be
removed if the target or caster leaves the party or raid.

This was apparently done after a raid soulstoned every member by
having every member level a warlock alt to 18.

I never said you can use the different ranks to avoid the 30 minute
cooldown. What I said was give my proposed Store Soul spell a 30
minute cooldown shared with all other tanks of the spell, much like
the current soulstone shares the same 30 minute cooldown with all
other ranks of soulstones.

This one gets a lot of people really. If I had received a copper for
each time someone called me a ninja after making a soulshard or got
flamed cause I didn't want to share the 'Soulshard' quest, I'd have an
army of epic flyers by now Smile
