This just goes to show how important price really is for mainstream
appeal. "The industry" is still trying to figure out how to classify
the Wii since it's "cheated" by breaking the nex-gen console rule on
graphics and opting instead of a unique control. Obvious Nintendo's
move was perfect for them and it has given them the #1 spot (with a
bullet), but does this mean all those people who were playing God of
Wa, Metal Gear Solid, Halo 2, etc.. on PS2 and the original XBox
moving on to WarioWars: Smooth Moves, Mario Striker: Charged? I don't
think so. Completely different kind of gamer... and that's what isn't
being talked about when the Wii's success is mentioned. >> Stay informed about: Nintendo Wii moves into the #1 position - has the largest .. |

There's no attach rate on the Wii. It's a standalone toy. >> Stay informed about: Nintendo Wii moves into the #1 position - has the largest .. |

Not a single person like myself is going to care one bit how good the wii
sells. It's not even competition, and is in a different category. It's not
even next-gen. It appeals to the largest user base in the world that would
be attracted to such a toy, small children. And there are MANY small
children in the world.. In fact, there are many more small children in the
world than there are males in my age group that play gears of war, grand
turismo, halo, god of war etc. So yes, the wii is most certainly going to
sell more, and always will sell more than the ps3 or 360. Does it matter?
Not in the least. It's almost like saying dvd is selling much more than hd
dvd or blue ray. Of course it is, and who cares? Certainly not real video
enthusiasts. Just like real gamers don't care. The only people that care are
analysts(since they are paid to care about such things)... and since the ps3
and 360 are both selling well enough, and probably no worse than if the wii
didn't exist, i'm sure sony and ms don't care either. >> Stay informed about: Nintendo Wii moves into the #1 position - has the largest .. |

Kids and soccer moms aren't that discerning when it comes to games and
that's the Wii audience in a nutshell. The same people that freaked
out and bought Beanie Babies. The same people who bought millions of
Cabbage Patch dolls. They buy it because it's the thing to buy, not
because they have any inherent interest in games.
That being said, I saw Wii's on the shelf at a store for the 2nd time
since launch day yesterday!

And it's great for family fun! I don't think the X-Box 360 or PS3 (while
better consoles technically) have those type of games that the Mums &
Dads can join in with the kids and play. So the user base of the Wii is
indeed different. So comparing it the PS3 or X-Box 360 is a bit like
comparing Apples and Pears! >> Stay informed about: Nintendo Wii moves into the #1 position - has the largest .. |

Well, the 360 does get family content. It's just as in "gamer who has
kids who want to play with dad". >> Stay informed about: Nintendo Wii moves into the #1 position - has the largest .. |

I disagree - yet you're right about one thing: Wii is not next-gen,
yet neither is Xbox 360 or PS3. they're ALL current-gen.
Next-gen now means consoles that are in development:
such as the 3rd-generation Xbox - "Wii HD" - PlayStation4.
next-gen consoles are consoles that won't be coming out in the next 2
years or so, but more like 3-5 years from now. >> Stay informed about: Nintendo Wii moves into the #1 position - has the largest .. |

I can guarantee you they do care, bacause they are beholden to their
stockholders and they are losing money. Both Sony and Microsoft both
have to find a way of turning this around. Sony have PS2 to fall back on
luckily, Microsoft have some excellent games coming up. Who will
actually start turning a profit next is anybody's guess. >> Stay informed about: Nintendo Wii moves into the #1 position - has the largest .. |

That is a very naive statement on your part. You will care if all the
talented developers drop the XB360/PS3 and migrate soley to the Wii. >> Stay informed about: Nintendo Wii moves into the #1 position - has the largest .. |

Bearing in mind that the XB360 and PS3 have sold 10.5 million and 4.3
million respectively, do you think that is at all likely?

What's really troubling is that the Wii doesn't have an outstanding
game library right.
Things improved recently, but still, most of the games are rehash of
previous material and for months, only a handful of quality titles
were available (Warioware, Super Paper Mario, Resident Evil 4, Zelda)
What really helped the Wii sales are 3 factors: innovative controls,
lower price and public curiosity.
The PS3 is an amazing piece of hardware. Unfortunately, that alone
doesn't cut it. >> Stay informed about: Nintendo Wii moves into the #1 position - has the largest .. |

If you exclude the Japanese market, where Nintendo always do unusually
well, and only count the US and Europe where history shows machines from
M$, Sony, Nintendo and Sega have all sold well (OK don't count Saturn
and Dreamcast) the balance is not to one sided. Outside of Japan this
sales battle is n ot over yet.
However I got a x360 and have no interest in buying the other 2. The
x360 has the games I want (Project Gotham, Halo, Forza) and the other
don't. As with all these things, you should buy the est machine for your
needs.
For the Japanese market Nintendo make the games that they know they can
sell. If the machine has the games that the people want to play, it will
sell itself.

What real gamer cares about sales battles? If the Wii outsells the whole
World, it doesn't affect what I like and want to play. Too many people
worry about irrelevant stuff. All of the consoles are good in their own
way. Let the marketing bods analyze and spin the figures to suit their
needs, it doesn't affect us playing the games we like, on whatever system
we like.
My main concern with games on these "next-gen" consoles, is the software
developers are concentrating too much on flashy graphics and 'trendy'
music, and not spending enough time on content. But that's another debate! >> Stay informed about: Nintendo Wii moves into the #1 position - has the largest .. |
