I am in a nosey frame of mind, I would like to know what rodents are we
using.I have a Typhoon optical that been glowing happily for 2 years, now
getting a bit worn ( all the silvering is worn away). I suppose it won't
last for ever so I could be in the market for a replacement, at least to
keep as a standby in the drawer .

There are more questions than answers,

MS Intellimouse Explorer 3.0

They quit making this model a few years back but luckily brought it
back last year due to pent-up demand.

Vis can you bind all the buttons I get a problem with the typhoon in that
the roller binds as the second thumb button I used to use a netmouse pro
with the rocker which was brilliant for sniping and weapon change binds let
down by the lack of an optical version and finally dropped by Genius

Derek

I don't use funky binds as such, just the standard ones you can set by
preferences.

Left mouse primary fire

Right mouse secondary fire

Scroll up next weapon

Scroll down previous weapon

Click scroll wheel down translocator select

I used to bind mouse buttons 4 and 5 to things but you need intellipoint
software from MS loaded to do that.

apologies for the late reply

That must be application dependent. I regularly bind 4 and 5 to
in-game functions and I just use the drivers built into XP.

Can't test it with UT99 though... don't have it installed.

I have a couple of those around here. I also have a couple of Intellimouse
Explorers that are very similar in function but differ slightly in shape
(and they are white). I've always been pretty pleased with them, but I'm
due for something different. Right now, my workstation has a logitech mx310
attached to it. I've been OK with the logitech because the buttons are the
same and can be bound the same as the microsoft mice. It's a little
narrow... but the real issue is exactly what you (Folk) wanred me about a
year and a half ago when I asked about a ratpadz. My ratpadz has worn out
and has worn the feet off my mouse. They are both more or less trashed.

So, I popped by the NG today to get a little advice on replacements. I'm
giving some consideration to a razer copperhead and the razer pro pad
mousing surface. I'm wondering if anyone has any thoughts on the matter. I
haven't tried anything new in a long time but the other ones I thought
looked interesting were the new logitechs with weights and free spinning
wheels etc.

I think I'm also ready for a new keyboard. Some of the games I've been
playing are beginning to make me feel like I don't have enough fingers
(Crysis and BF4 for instance) I've been using Microsoft Ergonomic keyboards
for about 5 years or maybe a bit longer. I use the regular $35.00 USD beige
PS2 one with nothing fancy. I don't even know the model number. I'm
starting to wonder if one of the keyboards out there marketed as a "gaming
keyboard" are worth the change. I like the idea of programmable
macros/keybinds etc, but I've seen a couple of boards now that have like a
gamepad on the left side. Does anyone have anything to say about new
keyboards as well?

I don't have any feedback on rodents.

I use the Icemat for a mousing surface, but some people are put off by
the noise. On the plus side they're always smooth (or can become
smooth with a bit of soap and water) and they don't wear out. Using
the replaceable Teflon mouse skates cuts down on the noise
considerably and puts them on par noise-wise with the Ratpadz.

As for keyboards, I've heard several people praise the Steel Series
keyboards, but I doubt they're worth the price you have to pay. I use
the offspring of the old IBM M series keyboards found here:
http://pckeyboards.stores.yahoo.net/customizer.html but if you're not
used to the buckling spring keyboards (or hate the noise) then you're
not going to be happy with them. And TBH, the support feet on mine
have a tendency to close sometimes during rough gaming sessions so I
can't heartily recommend them either.

In other words, pay no attention to me... Smile

Thanks, Folk. You've set me on a quest, I think.

I just realized that if I want a new keyboard, I'm going to have to do some
research. I'll start here: That IBM M - How responsive are the keys and do
you have anything to compare the necessary pressure to depress the keys to?
- That sounds a little nuts, but I actually have a pretty good reason for
asking. I crushed my ulner nerve in my left elbow about a year ago and had
ulner nerve transposition surgery done last April. My pinky and ring finger
aren't 100% operational any more. The only way to describe it is that they
feel like they are asleep all the time ("pins and needles" I think is the
terminology I used as a kid) and they don't have a normal amount of
strength. My Microsoft Ergonomic is what I think you are calling a
"buckling spring" but it is well worn and no longer requires the pressure to
depress a key that it did when it was new. If it was as stiff as when it
was new, I probably wouldn't be able to use it very well.

I just spent a half hour reading about the Steel Series. That sounds like
it might be a good solution for me, but you're right about the price tag,
and a cursory inspection of my favorite online stores (i.e. newegg etc)
didn't turn up any G7's for sale and a universal "out of stock" notice
across the board for G6's. If I venture away from my normal online vendors,
I could probably find one I suppose, but I'd have to be extraordinarily
convinced it is worth it to do business with websites I'm unfamiliar with.

I've read a few things online about this keyboard
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?item=N82E16823161028 Ideazon Merc
Stealth, but I'd sure like to get a comparison from someone who has actually
used one. The newegg reviews are a bit mixed and the guy that reviewed it
at overclockers club seems to have some legit gripes that I would probably
have about its "normal use" functionality.... and I've read a couple of
times that it seems to be missing a delete key. ctrl alt delete is a bit
difficult without a delete key. I'm gaming on windows, so that fact alone
means that I occasionally need to ctrl alt delete <grin>. I really need to
find out if it is actually missing a delete key or if it is just not in a
normal place. Soooo... anyone who happens across this thread who has any
experience in the matter, please chime in.

I'll take your advice this time on mousing surface. I just ordered that
razer copperhead and an icemat. - I really wish I had taken your advice
last time. My ratpadz is still on my desk but it wore out a long time ago
and it has eaten the rear feet off two or three mice in its short lifespan.
I loved it for maybe the first 90 days, but it wore out fast. Now, I'm
really looking forward to throwing it away.
