A good mate of mine has been cajoled into playing WoW more, to try and
get him out of a bit of a slump. I'm trying to get him to use his lvl
43 Rogue, but he has some really non descript gear, even by my
standard. Where should we go chopping to find him at least a couple of
blue leathers or suchlike. Hes using a white Dagger for goodness sake.
its not even a claw of any description! Hopefully if we can loot him
some nice stuff, his enthusiasm may return.

Your best bet may be doing some instance quests.

Scarlet Monastery has a nice dagger reward for killing the 4 bosses.
Gnomeregan boss quest has a very nice leather legs reward.

Early 40s is a bit high for those quests, but still reasonable.

Combat or dagger rogue? Since you mentioned daggers I'll assume a
backstab build.

If your friend is alliance, run Scarlet Monastery with him. There's a
decent quest dagger (black menace) that comes out of it and you might
be able to get him a hypnotic blade along the way. Hypnotic has caster
stats but it's still a decent offhand rogue weapon.

Widowmaker is a decent 40s level blue dagger that can be bought in the
AH but I don't recall the minimum level for it.

The next daggers that are relatively easy to get are in Maraudon
(Satyr's Lash) and Sunken Temple (a quest reward, the name escapes
me). The lash can be farmed pretty easily since a high 40s level group
can clear to him in under 20 minutes. You can go in, kill him, reset
the instance and try again.

Hmm i cant remember what the minimum level is (and its probably level
50 ish knowing me) but as a young rogue i remember being really happy
with my Helm of Fire, and my Phantom Blade. Costs quite abit from AH.
But look really nice. Although when i had them everyone else did as
well Sad

As already mentioned, the Gnomeregan boss quest rewards gives great legs; I
had them till lvl 41 or 42 myself, and would've kept them longer, but some
Basilisk Hide Pants came up on the AH, and as a friend with a lvl 60 rogue
told me he's still wearing them, I figured they were a worthwhile
investment! The AH is a good place to get equipment, a lot of nice things
come up there, and they don't all have high prices.

In particular look out for Nightscape gear; it's crafted and as it doesn't
require much in the way of special ingredients a lot of leatherworkers will
skill up on it so it'll be fairly cheap - there's so much of the stuff on
my server that I couldn't sell the ones I made and ended up having to send
them to my guild's bank mule for disenchanting Sad If he needs money, I
suggest he grinds some of the pirates outside Booty Bay, as they drop
plenty of cash and sellable stuff, I even had a nice green dagger off one
not long ago.

Also if he's not done them already, there's several quests in STV which
give good green leather armour for high-30s/low-40s - the quests from
Nesingwary's expedition in particular (I think all 3 hunter chains gave me
green leather items with agility etc, ideal for a rogue or hunter), plus
the short chain from the leather supplies guy in BB, Drizzlik I think his
name is (first one's lvl 31, so will be very grey to him); it goes through
a series of different crocs to kill and ends in a nice pair of boots as
reward after killing a lvl 38 elite croc, which even with poor equipment
should be easy for him - I soloed it at 37, albeit with fairly good gear
and use of a healing potion.

I would say go and buy a good green (unless he can afford a blue) 1 handed
sword from the AH, a dagger with good and also kit him out in items that
are 75% agility.

Also where he has spent his talent points will make a difference, if he's
spent em all in stealth early on then he'll be losing the 12 in combat stats
that IMO are essential for a young(ish) Rogue. After these you can start
spending in assassination, I haven't even touched Stealth yet at lvl 36 and
am not missing it at all.

BTW - I have a couple of blue items but nothing special, I tend to go for
the best greens I can afford and aim towards Agility then Stamina then
Strength.
