I'm not clear on the difference between attaching and equipping artifact
equipment.

I thought you had to pay to play the equipment, then you paid to attach
the equipment.

What, then, is equipping?

"Equip" is a keyword activated ability that allows you to attach the equipment
it's on to a creature as part of the ability's effect; you pay the listed equip
cost as the activation cost of this ability. So equipping an equipment can only
be done once the equipment is already in play (because the ability doesn't work
from other zones, like most abilities don't), and you have to pay to use it;
paying the Equipment spell's cost to get the spell on the stack and,
eventually, the equipment into play is separate from that. (Equipment, unlike
Auras, does not come into play attached to anything.)

There are some other spells and abilities that tell you to attach an equipment
to something it's not currently attached to; these aren't "equipping" it,
because they're not using the Equip activated ability. They don't involve
paying the Equip cost, for example. But they still take the equipment and stick
it onto a creature.

Equip X means: pay X - attach to target creature you control. *Play
only as a sorcery.*

The UU attach ability can be played at any time. The Equip: 1 ability
can only be played when you could play a sorcery.

You play an Equipment spell. It resolves and puts itself into play.
At this point, it is not attached to anything.

All Equipment cards have an equip ability. This ability is played only
when you could play a sorcery. It has a cost, which is usually a mana
cost, and a target. The target is the creature that you're equipping.
When the equip ability resolves, you attach the Equipment to the
targeted creature. All that means, usually, is that you put it under
that creature and remember that that creature is the one that the
Equipment is attached to. When the Equipment refers to "equipped
creature", it refers to the creature that it's attached to.

So why don't we just always use "equipped?" Well, for one, we need to
distinguish between the whole equip ability, which is a keyword ability
with its particular timing and targeting, and attaching, which is a
keyword action that can be used within any effect.

Another issue is that Equipment, Fortification and Aura permanents all
end up attached to things. Equipment "equips", Fortifications
"fortify" and Auras "enchant" something, but they do this by being
attached to that thing.

One of the most common uses for "attach" on an Equipment is to allow
you to move the Equipment any time you can play an instant or
ability. For example:

Cranial Plating {2} Artifact - Equipment
/ Equipped creature gets +1/+0 for each artifact you control.
/ {B}{B}: Attach Cranial Plating to target creature you control.
/ Equip {1} ({1}: Attach to target creature you control. Equip only as
a sorcery.)

This gives you two ways to get the Cranial Plating onto a creature.
You can play the equip ability, or you can play the extra activated
ability. The equip ability can be paid for with any color of mana, but
can only be used any time you could play a sorcery. The other
activated ability can only be played with black mana, but can be played
any time you can play an ability.
