Archived from groups: alt>games>unreal>tournament (more info?)

I have been having serious problems with my connection since before
christmas with enormous packet loss >35% and ping spiking into the
stratosphere I'm working with the ISP Virgin Media to resolve it and due a
3rd tech visit this week so if I've slid past you at any point sorry but I
can't help it.
Anyway in the course of testing the tech supp thought it could be a problem
at my end so I fitted a new cable modem which proved even worse then I
started to question my computer its way more than capable of running UT at
Hi settings with a gig of pc3200 ram an Athlon XP 3200+ and a geforce 5900xt
it hits FR better than 100fps so its not struggling maybe the NIC ? well
not really its a gigabit connected to a 4 meg cable modem so it should fly
the second NIC is a 10/100 to connect herself to the net ( peer to peer)
maybe I should stop being stingy and spring for another gigabit so the Lan
is running faster then I saw a horrendously expensive accelerated NIC with
its own onboard processor that offloads the networking form the CPU.
Question: would you really spend this much to gain a slight edge gaming ?
( provided of course you are not Fatal1ty Johnathon Wendel )

First off, take these:

(..........)

Those are periods. Use them. It makes your postings way easier to read.

Now, there is no reason to go all crazy. Use Occam's razor to diagnose the
problem. Have you disabled your firewall to see if that's it? Cable is
terrible at giving actual speeds advertised, especially at peak times. Have
you done a speed test to see if you are getting what you think you have?
Have you done a traceroute to see if there are bottlenecks somewhere? Is it
confined to UT or do other games give problems?
Don't think the "techs" are anything other than guys who took two semesters
of computer science in high school. Find the problem yourself. You have the
tools, google a little know-how and you'll get it fixed.

Doh did not read sorry.

Try these links

http://www.chetnet.co.uk/

http://www.cableforum.co.uk/

Looking at your setup it does seem a bit odd.

For best results you should have your modem in to a router then all your
other pc's connected to your router. Which you could set up for band width
allocation, port forwarding etc for servers and games and P2P if needed.

You say you have 2 network connections running from 1 PC a giganet and a
10/100. I hope you do not have the P2P running at the same time as you are
trying to game as that will be your network problems right there especially
if P2P is up/downloading fast.

Virgin have you on a 4mb modem?? seems awfully slow, the standard modem
will run up to 30mb at the moment. I have a 20mb at home and its rock
solid.

It could be your modem will go much fast but you are on the "L" upto 4 mb
package.

Does your packet loss stay constant through out the day??

If it varies you may be in an area where virgin are now over subscribed and
you are in contention with the others on the UBR for your street.

When you next get a Virgin Tech visit get him to ensure the Input power
levels to your modem are spot on. Too weak or strong have both caused
problems for me. I had to get them in the past to turn up the signal level
for the whole street as they had been adding customers but not adjusting
power levels to match new demand.

Those links should help

Virgin is wonderfull when it works. But when it does not Sad

PS when you next see a tech ask him how much he gets for a call out. you
will be shocked

The Killer nic has been reviewed bunches of times. Most reviewers say
the slight improvement in pings (due to offloading the network stack
to the nic's onboard processor) is not worth the price.

BTW, the version with the heat sink is a bit of a ripoff. Newegg has
both versions listed here:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Descr...ion=kil

There's a US $100 difference in price!

I've been running diagnostics and so have cable support tracert checked
ports modem interrogation etc . It seems the problem is varience in the
signal levels the difficulty being that the problem is not consistant that
and some very odd tracerts reading within the NTL system dodgy or
overloaded router.
The network setup is a legacy from NTL days when they would not support
more than one machine on a STB connection nor allow a router, so the
quick and dirty way was to have the most used machine as the gateway and
have the network run off that, we have had 4 machines running simultaneously
with no great problems. As we do not file share, these days most of the
bandwidth eating operations we run are net-radio and UT hardly a problem on
4 meg. Could be putting a router on the CM would be a good long term
solution I will have to check what VM are advising in that respect every
little helps .
The packet loss is unpredictable I could play a game and see <5% next game I
am a slide monkey and it spikes the thick end of 50% which is when I quit
rather than ruin the game for other players and get deeply annoyed at the
end sudden of my stress relief................
( which btw gopostal is when I dont really give a toss about punctuation or
come to that grammer - when the adrenaline takes over Smile .Those (.....) are
I should point full stops or they were when my English Language teacher was
alive around 30some years ago and a period is time related division. Smile
bug me and we will come and tax your Tea.

I was unlikely to pay anything like that for a NIC even at US pricesand UK
are much higher- I have a drawer full of 10/100 for the time being
btw I am up to speed a faulty setting in the local (VM ) router supplying
wrong signal strength which was tripping up the CM adjusted by the tech in
the street cabinet and I am sniping happily again.
