Hi

I am confused about character creation. Do I need a prestige class
later to finish the game? Also, if I mess up at the beginning choosing
feats etc, am I doomed to never be prestige? (This may all be in the
manual but I either can't find it or don't understand it - sorry) I
have been unable to find anything that simply laid out what I had to do
to get to the Eldritch Knight - which looks quite interesting.

Thanks in advance for any help

HI. Thanks for writing back.

snip

Saw that bit in the manual, but I seem to remember from NWN 1 that
there were feats that once chosen precluded others. I decided to start
with a vanilla warrior and have now chosen greatsword or some such.
Then I got to thinking (oops) that now I didn't have the 'simple
weapons' category but the martial weapons one and should I go back and
restart from the first level up and chose a plain sword? Then I
decided to write to this group and ask for advice. So...

If you want to be a particular prestige class and don't choose the correct
prerequisite skills, feats, etc., then yes, you'll never be able to attain
that class. But as I said, you don't need that to finish the game, anyway.

The prerequisite skills are both in the manual, and adequately given during
character creation, so far as I could tell. The manual outlines eldritch
knigh requirements on page 73, at least in my manual. Take note that you
have to be able to cast level 3 *Arcane* spells. Put more simply, that
means that fighter/wizard is probably the easiest route to get where you
want to go.

No. You can choose a prestige class if you want what it has to offer, but
you don't have to. You can surely play the game without ever have a look at
prestige classes.

It's hard to be SO doomed so that you can never take one. However, normaly
you can choose Prestige classes around level 7-10... If you take the "wrong"
feats, etc. you could need a higher level...

Look in the manual:

Alignment: Any non-evil - You may not be evil when you want to take this
prestige class

Feats: You need the Alertness and Iron Will feats, so I would suggest taking
them in time

Skills: Diplomacy 8, Lore 4, Survival 2 - Put your skill points there Smile

Arcane Spellcasting: Level 3 - You must be able to cast Level 3 spells, so
you need at least some levels of wizard, bard or sorcerer.

Don't worry about the Simple weapons category. If you have chosen a
fighter, then s/he automatically is proficient with all simple and martial
weapons. (I don't recall about exotic weapons).

I don't know of any feats that preclude others.

Greatsword? As a fighter you can use simple and martial weapons by default.
You only need to take the feat for exotic weapons, if you want to use one of
these (Katana, iirc).

I would advise you NOT to take feats like Weapon Focus, Weapon
Specialisation, etc. so early (this feats only give some advantages when
using the weapon you selected - they are not required). There are much more
"generic" feats. If you REALLY know that you will only fight with THIS type
of weapon, you can take them - but normaly, you will not know that until
very late in the game (because there are many different weapons around).

> Then I got to thinking (oops) that now I didn't have the 'simple

You should have the ability to use both. Just because you're a fighter Smile

Btw, don't the skills prereqs have to be the unmodified, raw skill
points? Thought that might be worth mentioning/asking.

The manual is incorrect in this case, the Harper Agent and Eldritch Knight
requirements are mixed together. In-game descriptions seem to be correct.

I'm not sure about this, I tried a neutral sorcerer.

These are not needed!

This requirement is correct. Additionally, you will need to have the
Martial weapons proficiency feat, and possibly a correct alignment.

Neutral is non-evil.

Which is exactly why I'm not sure whether being non-evil is required:
I qualified for that requirement. Based on the in-game class description,
the only requirements are martial weapons and arcane caster level 3.

Thanks all - hopefully almost done

So...if I just chose the martial weapon thingie and arcane spell
casting 3 I should be ok, notwithstanding the diplomacy, lore and
survival. However, the manual says simple weapons which I don't think
is the same as martial weapons (is it?) and

Where did you find these files:

Ah, you're right there... In classes.2da it says, that the prereqs for
the
Eldritch Knight are in the cls_pres_eknight.2da file and this file only
says
"Martial Weapon Proficiency" and "Arcane Spells 3".

1 level of barbarian, fighter, paladin, or ranger, or taking the
martial weapon proficiency (big waste IMHO, might as well take the
level if you are going to go knight anyway) and 5 levels of wizard, or
6 of sorcerer, or 7 or 8 levels of bard. A sorcerer/paladin eldritch
knight might be interesting.

No, simple weapons are a lower level of weapons. If you know martial
from your class you also know simple. If you pick up martial weapon
proficiency it's not guaranteed you know all simple weapons though. So
for instance a fighter knows all simple and martial weapons. where a
wizard knows only wizard weapons, but if he picks up martial weapon
proficiency he now knows wizard & martial weapons (that's not quite
D&D, but that's the way it works in NWN. In D&D the martial weapon
proficiency lets you learn only one martial weapon. That's really way
too weak for a single proficiency though, and I agree with the NWN full
martial knowledge.)

It's along the lines of knowing a level of weapons :

0 wizard (druid, rogue, or monk, which all include a mix of simple,
martial and/or exotic, but don't know all of any)
1 Simple
2 Martial
3 Exotic

HTH.

No non-evil requirement there. I didn't think EK required non-evils.
