NWN2 Required Characters?

In NWN2 am I required to take any NPCs into the party? For example do
I need to take Grobnar Gnomehands the Bard into the party, will I miss
any quests if he is not in the party?

At certain points you'll need to use certain characters for certain
missions but the game will literally force those characters on you at
those points.
There are also several character related quests but they are optional
and not crucial to the overall plot.
