Archived from groups: alt>games>neverwinter-nights (more info?)

So here's what I ended up with

Compaq V2602XT
AMD Sempron Mobile 3000+
256 MB DDR PC2700 RAM (1 DIMM)
40 GB Hard Drive
CD-RW/DVD ROM combo drive
56K modem |10/100 NIC | 802.11G
ATI RADEON XPRESS 200
AC 97 Audio
14.1 WXGA High-Definition BrightView
Windows XP Home

Actually, it appears the Radeon card is 200M, not 200 (I was warned to
avoid the 200P, but had no information about the M

The memory is a single card, and there are two slots for cards, so I
plan to buy two 512M cards, so that two machines have those while the
other two machines get two 256M cards each.

There's also an empty PC card slot, no idea what I might be able to pop
in there, is there a card based HD equivalent?

I currently have a Linksys wireless G router running in the house, with
my DSL plugged into it so our machines can share the internet
connection; is this workable for the built in 801.11G wi fi connection
on the machines?

I'd like to not only be able to use these machines to connect to the
internet, but also with each other, hopefully to be able to run NWN
multiplayer games with all four machines. Should I get more memory for
the machine working as server?

Or I still have the desktops the laptops are replacing, should I keep
one of those and set it up as the server, with all four laptops just
running for players? Can the router handle 5 machines in a network? It
only has 4 slots in the back, but I'm already running two cable and two
wireless.... is some combination that gets to 5 workable?

For that matter, is the router even necessary, can the machines just
communicate directly with each other?

Tons of questions, I thought picking one to buy was hard!

Lance

Not 100% sure, but I think the 200M is an integrated video chipset
sharing system RAM. After you get your 1GB RAM, check to make sure
that you've allocated the max (128mb, iirc) system ram to the video.

A few suggestions to optimize your machines:
Turn off the XP fluff graphics stuff - even when the desktop is hidden
by your applications, it is using up resources (right-click My Computer
-> Properties -> Advanced tab -> Performance/Settings button -> Visual
Effects tab, select Adjust for best performance button; if you like the
XP colors, select the bottom box (iirc) for visual styles on windows
and buttons

Check the free space on your hard drive. My 40GB drive (about 37GB by
Windows account) had roughly 7 GB in a hidden restore partition and
roughly 11GB of fluff... trial-ware, free offers, HP trial games, MS
Office 2003 trial, etc.... enough to fill nearly half the hard drive!
I went through the process of uninstalling stuff I didn't want,
manually deleting folders I found after uninstalling, etc., but still
had about 5 or 6GB used + the 7GB restore partition - not good enough.

So, first I created the standard restore discs just to have a set -
which turns out to be a good thing - the HP support site did not have
the correct drivers for the Sempron, modem, ATI chipset, and possibly a
few other things - and HP support in India had no interest in noting
that fact or changing it (oops, that just reminded me... the HP/Compaq
"make restoration disks program is unable to make DVDs using a USB DVD
recorder* and creating restore disks on CDs requires 11 CDs - not a
typo, eleven).

Then I created my own clean install XP CD using the instructions here:
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=3827

Be sure to get Magic JellyBean, run it and record the XP CD key that
was originally used for your existing install - when you reinstall XP,
use that original key and you won't have to re-activate XP! If you use
the license key on the bottom of the laptop, you'll have to activate.

and did a clean reinstall of XP. After applying the Hot Fixes and
patches (check out HFSlip
http://www.vorck.com/hfslip.html and nLite
http://www.nliteos.com/nlite.html)
If you want to get fancy, there are instructions for creating an
unattended install there somewhere (use your existing XP key) so you
don't have to babysit the process. When done, the fully patched XP Pro
install was just over 1 GB (I also wiped out the hidden partition and
repartitioned the drive to suit) so I had 36GB to play with Smile

Probably best to run NWN1 as administrator (power user might be OK,
haven't tried it). I think I've done it when logged in as a regular
limited user, but I had to right-click on the icon and choose "run as:
administrator" and de-select the "protect my operating system (or
whatever) files" for NWN to recognize the correct patch level.

> There's also an empty PC card slot, no idea what I might be able to pop

Yes, though I think they might need two PC card slots stacked on each
other (been a while since I looked, though). You may also be able to
find PC card adaptors that take flash memory cards, such as Compact
Flash. The price of either is such that you'd be better off either
buying a larger/faster HD, or using an external USB hard drive - or at
least that's how it was when I last checked.

Don't see why not, a lot depends on the machine location/distance from
the router.

Google "Ad hoc wireless network" - under XP, it is possible to
wirelessly network machines. Again, no experience, just know it's
possible but I don't know if that is faster/slower than using your
router.

OK, now I'm 100% sure Smile

sorry about that empty post, posting through Google, which hiccupped
and lost all my content.

I didn't explain the asterisk, and the long explanation I previously
typed has vanished into the ether. Basic substance of it was a rant
how abysmyal HP customer service was. Emailed HP, explained that I
wanted the 2 DVD recovery set rather than making 12 CDs (I said 11
earlier, but took a look out at the HP website and it says 12) and that
I would have paid for a DVD writer had I known that the HP recovery-set
making program could not write to USB DVD or over a network; was told
no problem, covered under warranty, would be shipped out immediately.

2 weeks later, I followed up with an email to be told that it was not
covered, and would not be getting it.

Several phone calls where I was on hold due to a high call volume;
finally I grimly hung on while doing other things, fellow on the other
end I finally got had such a heavy Indian accent that I couldn't
understand him; all in all it took several hours on the phone (80% on
hold, 19% me trying to understand the guy's mangle English, 1% actually
communicating), and several emails before I finally got my DVD set.

To HP's credit, they finally have the correct drivers out on their
website (they still haven't updated their manual to show the AMD
processors and ATI chipset yet, though)

Did this for Xmas, and now NWN does run on the machines. I got a copy
of Diamond for 20 bucks, and already had copies of NWN OC, SOTU, and
HOTU. Many of the discs were messed up but managed to find a working
set for a full install, and seem to have three working copies of the
HOTU disc. The Diamond install won't run on the HOTU discs, sadly, so
my dream of quick and easy installs all around off the single DVD didn't
come true, but I'm hoping that the Diamond will be able to run with
three HOTU machines.

Haven't actually played NWN on the machines yet, other than making a
character quickly and starting the OC just to be sure it worked and had
no lag

The router runs 7 machines at once just fine as far as internet
connection and file sharing go. Haven't tried multiplayer NWN yet,
don't even know how to set it up really, either via internet or as a LAN.

See how little I know? Is there a web site or something out there that
explains all this? Even my wife is interested in trying this out now
that we seem to all have computers that can handle it.

Not sure I understood that. With patch 1.67 and 1.68, there is no
longer a CD check.

I seem to recall with XP, you could easily set up an ad hoc wireless
LAN. Haven't done it myself. I think the router is likely faster.

Been a while since I've done this, might get a chance to check this
weekend and post back Monday. IIRC, you just start NWN on one machine
and select "Multiplayer"; load the LAN game or module you want to do.
This machine acts as the game server.

Then each of the client machines starts NWN, selects Multiplayer, then
selects LAN and selects the LAN game they want to join (should only be
one; the module the first machine selected). From what I remember, it
was very painless and self-explanatory. If you select a choice and
don't see what you expect, just cancel and try one of the other options.

Xp can set up an adhoc wireless network but only if you have a wireless
NIC (Network Interface Card) & router.

Two computers can talk to each other via what's called a "twisted pair"
CAT5 cable but for more than two machines, you need a router.

Can you play games on the second machine while still using the keyboard
and mouse of the first machine?

Yes. But you have to use something like a KVM switch that lets you use
a single KB & Mouse on multiple computers. Alternatively, you could
boot the 1st PC, set everything up, unplug the KB & Mouse, attach them
to the 2nd PC, boot it them log in that way.

More info on KVM switches here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KVM_switch

The router isn't needed, but each machine does need the wireless NIC.
Windows XP provides an automatic private IP address between 169.254.0.0
and 169.254.255.255 to network adapters if there is no DHCP server
available.

"Crossover" cable. There are also USB crossover cables, but I've not
used these myself.

With a KVM, the two computers only need to be networked *if* you need
to transfer data between the two machines. My homebuilt NWN2 rig is
completely isolated from the internet; my web-browsing machine is an
older Dell GX1 (upgraded). I use a Belkin KVM switch to use the same
keyboard and mouse to control the two machines.

That's fine if the KB & mouse are USB devices; don't unplug or plug in
a PS2 device while the machine is powered on.
