I haven't experimented, but it sounds like your delays have to do with
loading data from disk, and not with the graphics work per se. (If it
was the rendering load, you'd see a slow framerate, not delays in
changing scenes.)
Some of the graphics options still might make a difference. If there's
less background movement then the engine might spend less time loading
data.
On the other hand, for a while I was using a 3D card that just froze
for several seconds whenever new data was loaded in. (This didn't
happen in Myst, but it did in several Dreamcatcher adventures.) I
eventually replaced it.
